It is either fear of the unknown or unfamilar to insecurity.
Why do most people turn away from games just because of the way they look?
I understand if you can't get into the gameplay and you just don't like the game, that's perfectly fine. But not even trying to get into a game that you may even end up enjoying JUST because of the way it looks? That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
I beat Tearaway recently. It very well could have single-handedly justified my Vita purchase and is now one of my favorite games.
Moving on, people like to champion gameplay as the defining metric by which a game is judged, but I strongly disagree with this. Games, like all forms of media are about the experience, which is made up of several parts and any one or combination of which may have the greatest impact on one's enjoyment. Conversely, any failure of a prominent feature can hinder the experience.
For example, the gameplay in and of itself often isn't all that fun. I, for one, don't particularly enjoy tilting sticks and pressing buttons just for the sake of doing so. It's the context that the game's world establishes that makes pressing buttons fun. If a game's world is depicted in a way that I don't like it can break my attachment to the world, rid me of my motivation to do anything in that world and sap all the fun out of pressing buttons.
Huh? I see more people bitching about all the games with earth tone color pallets.
BTW MK8 is one the prettiest games this gen specifically because of it's use of color.
This thread reminds me to play Dragon's Crown (loved Odin Sphere and Muramasa).
I thought last gen had some fantastic looking art across all systems and genres.
Curious about Dragon's Crown myself (currently on sale on PSN) but I'm worried about the lack of content, having to play through the same few levels ad infinitum with no variation save for increased difficulty.
Has nothing to do with colorful. People just use that word, it's not that colorful is wrong, it's how the developers USE color, there's a way to make something look uh, unappealing and then there's the COLORFUL, you find in like adventure games and the like or the original Rayman, in fact, yes, Rayman is a good example. Compare the original to legends and origins, and you can see the difference. One doesn't make the game look stupid (the original) ad one does (Legends/origins.)
i dont dismiss mario because its colourful, i dismiss it because im not 10 anymore. lol platformers
if u dont like platformers the wii ew is literally worthless
lol. See? This is just what I'm talking about. "Well, if it's a platformer, it automatically sucks! Platformers are for 10 year olds." lol.
If platformers aren't your thing, that's fine. I understand. Everybody has different tastes. But a good game shouldn't be dismissed just because of it's genre.
''But a good game shouldn't be dismissed just because of it's genre.'' < but i dont like the genre than i can dismiss the game. just like most of the world is dismissing wii ew. simple
i dont dismiss mario because its colourful, i dismiss it because im not 10 anymore. lol platformers

The fact that you can't base an argument on why you dislike something without childishly mocking the console's name shows your lack of maturity.
lol at ur whole post. just lol
If you're an adult, I feel bad for you. Grow up, dude.

You must be new here. Welcome to SW. Where the arguments are shallow and fanboyism runs rampant.
??? The most succesful games are colorful, so i dont think gamers dismiss them that much.
Come to think of it, extremely few of the big name games are not coloful
To put it another way
Zelda is coloful, all gamers like zelda, zero gamers dismiss zelda, most gamers dismiss colorful (by thread title)
most = zero
Plenty of people bitch about gray as **** shooters. Get real.
Also, this so damn much. Last gen in its entirety, these kind of games were ridiculed, and it still happens.
Insecurity. Most of these guys also don't like to admit that they picked up a Wiimote and had fun with Wii Sports like the rest of humanity. Its kinda sad that people feel that a video game is a challenge to their manhood but there have been scared insecure men like that throughout time.
It's only a vocal minority that is like that. On SW it's usually just a handful of fervent cows using it as a means to bash Nintendo.... until LBP does it, then it's amazing.
And tbh, this really only happened a lot last gen when the "HD" twins started getting a lot of gritty looking games from the AAA scene.
In all fairness, it was equally met with "Greyzone, Gears of Brown" type comments.
Beyond that? typical insecurity.
I like colourful games but I still have preferences in art styles. For example I like dark gothic fantasy art styles yet I played ni no kuni, tales of xillia 2 and dynasty warriors . In terms of character design give me something that looks badass.

Pretty much this ^ :P
Because people also think putting one white person, black person, Mexican person, and Asian person on a tv show equates to equality. Yeah, majority is dumb.
Why do most people turn away from games just because of the way they look?
The ones that do are the ones to dismiss.
The only, ONLY reason I take issue with Nintendo's approach in their chosen aesthetic is because it's literally all that is available on their platform, or at the very least predominantly so. I would feel the same towards a more grounded, realistic look were that all that was available on the other platforms just as well. And like to admit it or not, Sony and MS do make much more of an attempt to diversify the style of their libraries than Ninty does, even though they may tend to hoist games that maintain a more "mature" and realistic approach when held in contrast. This is easier for them, for they have decent third party support to offer variety whereas nearly every game on Nintendo is made by Nintendo. This is a problem.
It's not the style that's at issue, it'schoice. When I don't have any choice but to be limited to one style, than style immediately becomes the problem even though it's a completely subjective criteria.
What do you mean by "most people"? Most people have no issues with colourful games. If anything, the most popular games among wider adult "casual" audiences are usually colourful games (e.g. mobile/tablet games today, or DS/Wii games last gen).
Those kinds of comments are usually from insecure man-boys who think they need to play dull-looking violent juvenile trash to make themselves feel like "adults". They clearly have personal insecurity issues.
because colorful is normally associated with pokemon and mario, both franchise i don't like/care about. Now if we're talking about Muramasa... amazing art style and would like to see it in tons of games. And if its colorful, i prefer it looked like this instead of kiddy fluffy creatures you throw red n while balls at.
I showed my friend a picture of Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed and he immediately lost interest....
He says he enjoyed NFS The Run more because it had a story and QTEs....
How the hekl did I become friends with this person ? :(
Wow that is shameful. Did you show him the game in motion? Things can easily be taken out of context based on a still picture.
@bunchanumbers:
I have a demo in ny 360 and he doesn't want to hear any of it.....
And this is not the only game.... its tge samething with every single Nintendo game.... Trine 2, The Legend of Korra.... basicly any game that might actually be fun.....
You know those people system wars keeps referring to as casuals because they play every CoD and Assassins' s Creed games........ Thats my two friends riggt down to the core......
Luckily I have one buddy who loves Portal......
