I mean Perfect Dark, Golden Eye, and Doom sparked a lot of ideas, but people still obsess over them. I understand that those games were a part of peoples childhood, but I still don't see anything great about them today. I know I'm gonna get flamed, but whatever. lol

because mostly, they are still solid games, apart from obvious shortcomings due to technical advancement. no matter how shiny a game is this gen, super mario world is still very fun to play. and so is ff6.

Those games suck but Abe's Oddysee, Fallout, and Planescape Torment are diamonds in the friggin' rough along with Warcraft RTSes and Starcraft. Anyway all old console games as a general rule suck but all old PC games are meltface and modern games fail to reach their high watermark by a good margin. Just compare a modern RPG like Mass Effect to an oldschool RPG like Baldur's Gate and you'll see what I mean. Sure, the UI wasn't perfect back then and the graphics aren't going to bowl you over, the lack of voiceovers may make things somewhat tedious, but the fact of the matter is just in terms of plain content the games of old were much much richer and deeper. The dialogue was thought provoking and highly variable.... And go look at something like Space Quest. Space Quest was awesome. Modern games fail. A lot of the time.

If you obsess over something like Fallout 1/2, Planescape: Torment or Baldur's Gate, then go ahead. They're better rpgs than anything released this gen so far.

While I'd be wise to not dwell too much in the past, it's still a bit painfull to see my favorite genre not only not improve but actually deteriorate.

Those games you listed changed the way we play games. For instance, Doom was the creation of the modern first person shooter. (I know that wolfenstein 3d was the first, but it lacked multiple heights). Goldeneye on the nintendo 64 proved that a console could have a good first person shooter. Up until then, accuracy was an issue because of the controls. There are a lot more games that are treasured for bringing something new to gaming.

Now for you saying that they are not that great is a testament to their design because almost all of those games features are in newer games.

RB is still awesome, but aside from Rear Window I don't like Hitchcock movies. Most of them aged badly, including Psycho and especially The Birds.

I would be more likely to sit down and play Zelda: OOT, Doom I/II, Half-life, Starcraft or Diablo II from start to finish then a lot of the newer gen games. At the end of the day gameplay wins out, and well gameplay fell off hard when the current gen started. There are innumerous games that are pretentious shells with a weak fun factor. Now the graphics or urge for something new will have people playing newer games more often, however, solid gameplay will stand the test of time.

One of the best movies of all time, and the precursor to many other great movies, inclduing Star Wars.

I think black and white movies are akin to the Atari, and movies like the Sean Connery Bond and 2001 are the NES era. LOL I could do a whole thread with this analogy.

It's partly nostaliga, but many older games are so good that one would want to play them over and over. I do speed runs of the old SMB games because they are so much fun. But that doesn't stop me from popping in games like inFamous.

It's definatly nostalgia... very few older games age well. Some do age really well(Super Mario Bros or Chrono Trigger for example) because they have a simple concept that just works. But games like FF7 or Doom definatly don't age as well.

Mostly nostalgia. You see it in everything - not just gaming. People long for the good ol' days. Trouble is, gaming has gotten better each successive generation. I have lots of games I am fond of, but when I go back to play them, I see how much they have aged.

Nostalgia. Some of my favourite games ever were from Megadrive and Snes era. Of course they are not so great on today´s standards but for those who played (and loved) them almost 20 years ago they could mean a lot more.

If its value is dependent on the contemporary software library how is it objectively improving? It's only improving relatively, which is like....how is that objective? If it were objective it wouldn't be contingent upon reference point, which is what you're saying computer software is. Strangely, you seem to think movies improve less over time, as though I can't compare Citizen Kane to House of the Dead and have a laugh at how failcheese modern cinema is.

The man asked for some games. Here are some:

Xcom: UFO Defense and Xcom: Terror From the Deep

Starcraft

MOO2

No modern iteration of these games has yet released that surpassed their glory.

Frankly, I'd rather play Armored Core 2 today than Armored Core 4. And I played Fallout 1 for the first time after I played Oblivion extensively, yet I prefer Fallout 1 over Oblivion, and not just by a small margin. I'd rather play Katamari Damacy today than play Katamari Forever (lol, I swear We Love Katamari has a better physics engine than Katamari Forever, the collision detection in KF is worthless). Maybe the reason people think modern games are so much better is because so many new posters and new gamers haven't experienced the "golden age" of videogames.

For many games its nostalgia, but some games actually age better than others. Of course the graphics suck, but some manage to capture a good balance of style vs quality that still makes them playable. Hey, the original Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies didn't use any CG, but they still hold up well enough today (perhaps even better than their recent additions...)! Take Doom, for example. Maybe it's not as engaging as a Call of Duty, but it's still fun to mow down a horde of zombies, dodge through the rockets of a cyberdemon, and try to match that level runthrough time. The speed and chaos of multiplayer is actually very different than todays games landscape, where everything is slow/deliberate, so if you're in the mood for something fast-paced you almost have to go old-school. But overall, yeah, I usually player newer games more than older ones, but some can still be fun for an hour or two.

On an unrelated note, whenever I try playing Baldurs Gate 2 and select one of the items it gives the error "vidcell larger than fx". Anyone have any idea what that means and how I can fix it? :? I've patched it and have tried to install it a few times as well.

Nostalgia. Some of my favourite games ever were from Megadrive and Snes era. Of course they are not so great on today´s standards but for those who played (and loved) them almost 20 years ago they could mean a lot more.

I agree with this.

I'm probably one of the most nostalgic posters on here who grew up with Atari 2600 and NES, LOL.

Yeah. My first system was a Spectrum128k and honestly i dont miss those 15 minutes "loading times" :P

On the other hand Nes, Megadrive, Snes and Amiga500 provided me some of my favourite gaming moments ever!
