I guess people obsess over old games like they do newer ones. If you like a game, you like a game, simple as that. I play more NES,Turbographix16,Atari Jaguar games then I do 360 games. They are more chanllenging and just plain more fun to me
man, I love this answer.Simple answer: Nostalgia, and the fact that people are still stuck in the past. I love some classics myself too. But saying something along the lines of Super Mario World > Super Mario Galaxy (example) just makes it obvious that you're very delusional.

people like older games because of a number or reasons, nostalgia is certainly a factor (most kids wont play a game older then they are), but there is something else.
most of these games are stilljust asgood today, I still play my older games as well as new PS3 games, since I grew up during the 90s, I can accept a game that doesnt run in HD and has top of the line graphics by today's standards.
just because a game is new, doesnt mean its good, just cause a game is old doesnt mean its not good anymore (and vice versa).
Mostly nostalgia. You see it in everything - not just gaming. People long for the good ol' days. Trouble is, gaming has gotten better each successive generation. I have lots of games I am fond of, but when I go back to play them, I see how much they have aged.

If only.
As for me when I was younger I played Goldeneye for hundreds of hours with friends, and I played CS 1.6 for hundreds as well. I have yet to find a multiplayer shooter that offers me so much gametime without ever getting stale aside from Halo 3, but that's one game in a decade since I played Goldeneye and CS?
I don't obsess over Goldeneye anymore though. Today I can't even pick up an N64 controller and play Goldeneye of Perfect Dark without shutting it after 5 minutes because the controls are awful, but I'm still disappointed at the overall lack of awesome, competitive multiplayer shooters available to me today. It's all very mainstream stuff which is saddening.
There are some games which have aged well. Some personal favorites of mine being Banjo Kazooie or Donkey Kong Country. Both games are so easy to pick up and play today as long as you can look beyond teh graphics. TC mentioned Doom, and even that game is really simple to just play through, and it's still fun. Not sure why it's a crime to like that game.
Yeah I agree it still is fun to play to this day but it hasn't aged well. 2D games are still great to this day IMO it doesn't matter when they released as long as it is after the 2600 it would still play great IMO.Cause they love em. Simpley put, most games in certain genres don't really age well.
By today's standards Goldeneye is a horrible game, but back 11 years ago it was dah bomb.

yeah, so if i compare a movie like eastern promises to canadian mounties vs atomic invaders, suddenly modern cinema is looking like a golden era. your comparisons are retarded
i think quite a few people have reasonably addressed the point in this thread. a lot of us remember pouring hour upon hour into older games. i remember back in college playing team fortress classic for, i dont know, two hours a day? sometimes five or ten, if nothing was going on? same with final fantasy tactics. perfect dark back in high school and public school in marathon sessions. ive never played games like that since. but it was more because back in the day, before i had a family and real obligations, my time was worthless so i could sink more into games. it wasnt that they were way better.
some games are still outstanding today. baldurs gate, super turbo, final fantasy 4/6, wonder boy 3, all still great. but most people who insist 'old gaems r bettar' just want to look like crusty old vets with long-standing preferences, despite probably being unable to grow facial hair. a lot of games that are held up as being way better than modern games just arent very good anymore.

old school games > games this gen
Sloan360
Really which ones? cause new games are ment to take the old ideas from the older generation and make them BETTER, and they have.
That might be what the are meant to do, but it is not what they are doing. Take a game someone mentioned above. When compared to Baldur's Gate 2, most current gen RPGs look hollow. Sure they are pretty, but they do not have as much soul.

Well i have never played that game so i can't really say anything but, RPG's as far as i've seen have improved. You just have to wade through some bad ones to get to the good ones, like Elder Scrolls 4 and Demon's Souls are excellent RPG's.
Gaming evolves... I love tons of games from my past. But when I go back to some of them they do mess up my image of them. It's best not to replay them... Only to remember them as they once were.
It is is like re-watching a movie that is a cult classic or a genre-defining masterpiece: You want to relive what made those moments so special in the first place. I just picked up FF7 for the 3rd time this weekend and am once again addicted :P Will probably play FF8 when I am done
this^Nostalgia... And the pioneering games are almost always the best in the genre to many people...

Because old school games were alot easier to just pick up and play, alot of em were just like mindless fun. They were like as easy to play as what today would be considered a casual game, but like they were deep and really difficult, i feel like they were a simple blend of hardcore and casual that today are now like two completely different genres

Because people grew up with them and playing them once is a while make them remember the good old times. Well I hated the water temple in OoT but that's a different story.
It's like saying why do you love FPS or MMO's?
I believe that the JRPGs and survival horror games of the late 90s (not all, but ...) really bloomed out of strong creative passion by the developers that is dwindling in the industry. I think you can feel the excitement of the developers to make the game that they were making and the love that they put into the games when you play them. Ex. RE2, Final Fantasy VII.
Since that time it seems like devs have struggled to be passionate about game making. Sure we've seen it last gen in many cases, but look at RE5. Does it really seem like a game that the devs were excited to create? Can you feel the same love put into it?
I know what I'm saying seems like BS, but that's the impression I got from those "ancient" games after I went back and played them midway into this decade (I owned an N64 5th gen).
For the same reason that gamers right now will look back in 20 years and say, "Man, they don't make games like *insert current gen game* anymore." I still dust off my copy of Fallout 2 every once and a while to help remind me what gaming was all about.
I think you're a bit nostalgia-fied. Would you really rather play Super Mario Bros 1 over SMG, or Castlevania on the NES over Symphony of the Night?Do you realize the crap they are putting out these days. Great games from the PS3, 360, and Wii will NEVER compare to the masterpieces from the NES, SNES, Genesis era. Games used to be flawless and fun.

Which games, exactly? I've given you a list of games that are superior to most modern games that are archaic in terms of when they were released and the technology required to run them. You've got a mountain of obvious insults in your post and I'm going to disregard those on the basis that it's completely irrelevant to your point. Anyway, regarding the comparison I made, incidentally I was not making a categorical comparison on the basis of two movies, obviously I realize there are good movies released today just like there are good games released today. My point was that it's completely ridiculous to act like movies categorically gray over time whereas videogames categorically become objectively amazing compared to modern games, which is what the person I was responding to seemed to be suggesting. Moreover I played Fallout 1 for the first time last year after I had played Oblivion. Oblivion sucks ass and Fallout 1 is better, and I stand by that. I'm not bearing any pretensions of being a grizzled vet or whatever you seem to think I am and I don't need to photograph my pubic hair to prove my status to you or anyone else. My statements rise and fall on the basis of their individual merit and have nothing to do to me.Or how about the original Half-Life. Is there a more atmospheric shooter?MarthRingmanThere are many. Including Half-Life 2.
Someone point me to where I can find modern games that are better than Planescape Torment, Deus Ex, Fallout 2, System Shock 2, CS 1.6, Homeworld, Total Annihilation, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, DOTT, AOK, Starcraft, Thief, IL-2 Sturmovik, and Freespace please.tagyhag

It's not that they are awful bu tby standards, concept and fun, many other new games I'd say match up to those and even surpass them, hell you would find many gamers that would have a hard time getting into those games she listed and hails as teh best.[QUOTE="mitu123"]I agree with this.[QUOTE="PAL360"]
Nostalgia. Some of my favourite games ever were from Megadrive and Snes era. Of course they are not so great on today´s standards but for those who played (and loved) them almost 20 years ago they could mean a lot more.

I'm probably one of the most nostalgic posters on here who grew up with Atari 2600 and NES, LOL.
Maybe the reason people think modern games are so much better is because so many new posters and new gamers haven't experienced the "golden age" of videogames. That has to be it, or one of the reasons at least.:PDo you watch old classic movies? Cause I doGiancarI do too! In fact tomorrow in my movie class, we're going to watch Casablanca! :D

Using cartoons for example, you don't have to be born in the 1960's to know that Looney Toons is still of the best out there and beats today's (lack of) cartoons. Please Log In to post.
