It doesent usually provide anything, I used to think achievements allowed you to unlock DLC but its not. Most achievements and tropies arnt skill related, their time to waste related, if you have the time and lack of a life to kill, you can drive your gnome from one part of the game to the other in Half life 2 just to say u did it. No one sane will praise you, people will look at you and assume, seriously you have that much time to waste. Im a big COD player but i never prestiged, people who do so disgust me, just for extra flags or icons, the first time a weapon or perk is unlocked doing so, ill be on the bandwagon, till then, im never doing it. One thing I do like about COD is it offers you points for your skill, i.e. highest K/D ratio (altho camping and not being on top should factor in). Likewise i hate it cause if u suck you dont get demoted, its simply a forward progression of how much time u get to waste playing the game. Either way, playing for such things disgusts me.

but most achievements arnt skill based, their based on how much time you have to kill to complete something silly, after numerous attempts. Its nothing to brag about that you have no life and have time to collect 100 pegions in GTA4 or something, seriously.

Well, the best reason why people do it is for personal achievements.

Yeah I miss when the reason you beat a game on the highest difficulty(or did some crazy speed run or something) was in order to unlock some secret lvl, boss, or item instead of some nonexistant praise to display to people you don't know.

In a way I don't really mind them since they give me an excuse to dive back into a game I enjoyed.:P

Bragging rights, compulsive completionism, boredom, feeling a sense of "achievement" from something fun as apposed to work, small amount of replay value some of the better designed achievements can add, e-peen insecurity :P

Because people like stats and achievement/trophies are a good indicator of progress. People like to show off their progress. Go figure.

it makes sense for a goal, cause in infamous, i disgust myself in collecting shards but have to to increase coles powers, i punched myself in the face the otherday after workouts cause i was soo sickened at myself for doing something tedious. but if there was only a trophie to be gained, u can bet your butt i wouldent touch a shard if i didnt have to.

I only like to get them for games I enjoy, and only if the trophies or whatever aren't stupid to me.

Gives incentive for gaming in my opinion, like last gen you would beat a game on the hardest difficulty but for what?

to sell the game for a good value after. its not an acomplishment to say u had enough time to waste to hide behind cover more or save up more potions to defeat a game on a higher level. For the most part, hard difficulties are superficial.

I've played through Devil May Cry 3 over 20 times. I've restarted/replayed many other games as well. I like to play things I....well....enjoy. I spend a lot of my time gaming.

Easily as much as 12 hours in a day, atleast every other day. What do you mean "look at your life"? I do as I please with my time.

Wow someone is a bit overly aggressive. You play a game more than once for the same reason you watch a movie, show, or hell eat a certain meal. You do it again because you enjoy it. The main reason you do anything again is because you enjoyed it.:D

Gives me more satisfaction! But really it just extends the life of my games if I can go back and get trophies. Makes me experience parts of the game I never would have sometimes (hardest difficulties.) And I like looking at my trophies for some reason.

Umm, I do it regardless of achievements. RPGs have had fetch quests, hidden bosses, legendary weapons, etc. for generations. Most of the RPGs this gen don't even have achievements based around those things. Your "doing something that doesn't provide any in game rewards" arguement doesn't apply here.

well my question is, are they doing it cause they truly enjoy it or to pass their miserable lives? if they had a more active social life, would they play a game more than 2 times. It seems like most people I know that really multiplay a game or play for trophies have sad lives. Where as many gamers I know who love games and play a game at least once dont care for those things because they have other commitments. SO answer this yall, do you play cause you feel like you must or do you play cause you have no alternative in life....

You can't be that happy with your own life if you are going around trying to judge other peoples...

You're going all psychological on us. What's the difference in whether we play a game again, or would be playing an other game at the same time? None at all. We'd be gaming still. This has nothing to do with other obligations.

You did not answer my question, why do you care? I don't see why your starting conversations to feel high and mighty over a group of gamers unless you want to get a reaction out of people.

Why is having a social life of higher value than spending time on a hobby one enjoys?

The same reason why people used to try to get the high score on an arcade machine I suppose. That's definitly not me though, unless its pinball.

I agree with this also. The only thing that should be important to anyone is the things they enjoy. I have plenty of meaningful people in my life but I really really enjoy playing games and getting games. Everything associated with gaming excites me. It has nothing to do with having a social life, and even if it did. So what?

Umm, just to clarify, you realize you're posting on a GAMING FORUM, right? By that simple action alone you fall in line with the so-called "people without social lives" as it may be.

For me, I work practically all the time. What little free time I have is spent with a combination of games, movies, and friends. I'm gonna go ahead and assume that "active social life" means going out and getting drinks or "Partying, bro!" Sorry, that's not me. I rarely if ever drink and I've never done a drug in my life. Forgive me if the fact that the vast majority of humanity is a walking cesspool and 99% of people aren't worth my time prohibits me from enjoying an "active social life." Have fun at "the club", going to see The Hangover 2, playing the newest Call Of Duty, and listening to Soulja Boy, bro. I'll be watching better movies, playing better games, talking to people with an IQ over 70, and listening to music that actually MEANS something.

Sidenote, theme parks, bowling, and mini-golf are more enjoyable than what most people consider "social."

Man, I totally got what you were saying there. I've got the exact same thoughts. Could be my post right there. Gaming has gotten a bad name in general, and so have its people. People assume gamers have no lives, while gamers actually just have other hobbies. 8) People expect me to be impressed when they say they got drunk, after probably 3 beers they don't mention.

Where as many gamers I know who love games and play a game at least once dont care for those things because they have other commitments. SO answer this yall, do you play cause you feel like you must or do you play cause you have no alternative in life....

i play what i want and do what i want because its what i want to do...its as simple as that. the same as you sitting here on a video game message board asking questions to other gamers about why they dont do other things with their lives....lol at your fail logic dude! most of us do have other things we like to do also...theres nothing wrong with liking something enough to play it again later on down the road.

Why do you play games at all? Fun goals to complete. Same as getting a high score, beating a group RPG like Dragon Age as a solo char, beating a game on hard, getting all the collectables, etc.
