For me, I work practically all the time. What little free time I have is spent with a combination of games, movies, and friends. I'm gonna go ahead and assume that "active social life" means going out and getting drinks or "Partying, bro!" Sorry, that's not me. I rarely if ever drink and I've never done a drug in my life. Forgive me if the fact that the vast majority of humanity is a walking cesspool and 99% of people aren't worth my time prohibits me from enjoying an "active social life." Have fun at "the club", going to see The Hangover 2, playing the newest Call Of Duty, and listening to Soulja Boy, bro. I'll be watching better movies, playing better games, talking to people with an IQ over 70, and listening to music that actually MEANS something.

You, sir, are my hero of the day. Well put.
I second the emotion expressed above. Back on topic, I like my achievements for a number of reasons: 1. When I unlock an achievement while online it is date stamped so that I know when I unlocked it. 2. Often, when an achievement is unlocked in the course of my doing something awesome, I look at the achievement and can remember vividly the awesome thing I did to obtain it. 3. If the achievements aren't ridiculous, they give me something interesting to shoot for once I've finished a game. On a side note(semi-related), Leaderboards are the same thing(uselessnesswise): unless you score within the first week(or less for the most part) the top ten in just about any leaderboard is unattainable due to boosting, exploiting/glitching, or other nefarious means. But you bet your *** I'm still proud of hitting the top 50 in one of Batman: AA's combat challenges.[QUOTE="PatchMaster"][QUOTE="Ryan_Som"]

so all those people with the tastes you mentioned are part of a mass of people with IQ's lower than 70 and fall in to the typical range? im gonna argue that you dont fall into that category cause you arnt excepted because your either physically unattractive or socially inept, so you follow another assortment of alternative groups, emos, gamers, nerds, etc to fit in. See how your logic fails? You know what's hilarious? I'm actually in a fraternity. Sorry bro, more fail for you.

Anywho, I'm done feeding the troll. If you want some attention make a new thread based on that article. Then again, please don't.

Well if I can provide that link, im pretty sure we can create a study that finds the mental and physical state is positively correlated to the amount of times that person replays a game or plays for achievements :)[QUOTE="deadlyabdus123"][QUOTE="PatchMaster"] so all those people with the tastes you mentioned are part of a mass of people with IQ's lower than 70 and fall in to the typical range? im gonna argue that you dont fall into that category cause you arnt excepted because your either physically unattractive or socially inept, so you follow another assortment of alternative groups, emos, gamers, nerds, etc to fit in. Well if I can provide that link, im pretty sure we can create a study that finds the mental and physical state is positively correlated to the amount of times that person replays a game or plays for achievements :) one thing has ABSOLUTELY no relation to the other...Indeed. I like achievements but I'm the type that doesn't care if I don't get all the achievements in the game, but rather enjoy getting them at my own pace. It also helps a lot with replay value. Some games that I've already beat I don't mind going back through them to maybe get a few achievements that I wasn't focused on to begin with. Another aspect of it enhancing the replay value is for a game that really isn't that great, but the allure of gathering some achievements can bring you into this game, and actually make you walk away from it liking it a lot better than before. It did with Dark Void for me. Not a great game but after playing through it for the achievements, it became a bit of fun.Because people like stats and achievement/trophies are a good indicator of progress. People like to show off their progress. Go figure.

To increase gameplay length, something challenging to strive for, I'm a completionist, and even though I say it doesn't it makes me feel superior to others.
Each person has their own reason, it can be something light hearted like trying out new challenges or self-accomplishment. Or it could get much sadder like playing the exact same game on different platforms to add to the score, or playing something one normally wouldn't play cause it's easy to get the scores/trophies like Avatar The Last Airbender or Hannah Montana.
i dont care for them, but I dont want to see them removed from games.... Its fun looking at my game card and looking at just how few games I have actually completed :(
well my question is, are they doing it cause they truly enjoy it or to pass their miserable lives? if they had a more active social life, would they play a game more than 2 times. It seems like most people I know that really multiplay a game or play for trophies have sad lives. Where as many gamers I know who love games and play a game at least once dont care for those things because they have other commitments. SO answer this yall, do you play cause you feel like you must or do you play cause you have no alternative in life....[QUOTE="deadlyabdus123"][QUOTE="Yangire"]
If they want to do so then why care?

Umm, just to clarify, you realize you're posting on a GAMING FORUM, right? By that simple action alone you fall in line with the so-called "people without social lives" as it may be.

Sidenote, theme parks, bowling, and mini-golf are more enjoyable than what most people consider "social."
*Sniff*This post makes me so happy.
I used to do them for fun because it was something new to get a checklist a random things to do throughout a game. I eventually stopped because too many game require tedious, mundane tasks that require too much time and getting a 2D picture appearing on my screen after house of doing something unenjoyable just wasn't worth it anymore

See how your logic fails?I don't have to follow anybody. I'm simply...me. Am I a gamer? A musician? A modern-day philosopher? I am all of these things. I am none of these things. One things for sure, I'm not you. And for that, I'm glad.
Not everything needs to be compartmentalized and categorized for the sake of labeling. Then again, I guess it's easy when everyone listens to the same crappy music, watches the same crappy shows, and has the same stupid problems.
As for me: 576 friends on Facebook (most of which I know in real life and am ACTUALLY friends with). Last I checked, my IQ was around 140. 5'11", 160lbs, and handsome (yeah, I said it). I've been in around 5 different bands and opened shows for The Ataris and played a show opening for Cartel at the University of Maryland in front of 800+ people.
Socially inept, my ass. ;)
So I guess what I'm saying is that I don't fit your mold. Oh, and this: Come at me, bro. 8)
OT: Achievements / Trophies are completely OPTIONAL. You can ignore them! Judging someone for liking to get them is like hating on someone for putting ketchup on their fries. :P
i really like them but i can't go all out like some of you guys. if an achievement or trophy is within reach, hell yeah i'll get it but i couldn't care less about 100%-ing or platinum trophies. i don't have enough time to be searching for blast shards, feathers or thermoses.
