LINK"This currently DOES NOT work on the steam version". Ive tried installing the exact version and it didnt work properly. It might work now using a newer version but it didnt before. And compatibility will be broken if Rockstar releases a patch that you dont have a choice whether to install or not install.

keywoard: currently people are working on it.

With the non-Steam version, there would be no need for the word "currently" It would be "has and always will work". Its nice that you ignored that point though and focused on the hope that the modders would come to the rescue.

The newest version of ICEhancer works fine on the steam version, and you can downgrade the steam version to the older patch anyways. Steam just keeps everything fully updated by default and GTA IV's newest patch has some limitations, but you can roll back patches on steam.

So steam sucks because of this one particular mod? What about Steam almost giving away the expansions? Isnt that a "better" upside?

90% of you guys are missing the point of this thread.

I never said Steam sucks. I use Steam everyday and love the community features. Im asking why would you buy a Steam game thats not on sale when you can get the physical copy online for a fraction of the price? Im also pointing out the disadvantages of a digital copy such as not having the physical material that some consider to be collectible and the possibility of losing all your games in the event that you somehow lose your account.

Ok, this is news to me. I was unaware that you could disable automatic updates for individual games. This solves a lot of problems. I dont like automatic. It just means less control. Id rather do this manually and have complete control.

Right click, properties, updates, and you can have it not update games. With GTAIV when you download it off of steam you download a fully patched version, but you can manually roll back the game's patches through a trick.

also if you want to disable automatic updates in general for your entire library you basically do the same thing under "settings".

It's true that some sites like amazon can sell the game a little cheaper or a have a good deal at launch. Steam also manages to do that too. Before Bioshock 2 was released those who pre-ordered got 10% off and a free copy of BioShock 1. Pre-order Portal 2 get a free copy of Portal 1. Dead Space 2 also has a similar deal.

Some games allow you to pre-install the full game before the officail release date, once it's past midnight you can instantly play rather than wait days for a physical copy. If you love and use steam everyday then why question the overall service?

I would never ever buy a game near its release on Steam. The fact that they charge the same price as retail is daylight robbery. I only buy from Steam if its much cheaper than the retail version, which has manuals and packaging.

I don't have this adversarial position some of you have against developers.

Unlike you, who feel "robbed" at paying full price for a game, I WANT to reward developers that create the games I sometimes spend a year looking forward to with what I consider to be fair market value for their product.

For 2-4 titles a year that's $50-$60. For the rest, that will probably be less and will require me to wait for a price drop or a sale. And I'm HAPPY that the developer sees more of my money via digitla distribution, that they would via a retail sale.

I fail to see the outrage in the situation.

I dont understand why so many people buy newly released (non-sale) games on Steam. If youre in the US, Steam rarely offers their games at a lower price than in stores. Even months after release, games can cost much more on Steam than you can find in a retail store or online. In fact, doing a simple search right now on Google, you can find all the front page Steam games like Witcher 2, Fear 3, Shogun 2, etc. for HALF the price, shipped. Hell. even Portal 2 can be found for much less online than on Steam. How come no one in SW mentions this?

Why spend more on a digital copy that costs more? At least with physical copies, you can add the physical box to your shelf or something. You can pull out the disc and install the game instantly if your game data gets corrupted or if you need to reformat. Plus, if your Steam account gets hacked or banned for any reason, every game tied to that account is gone.

Now I get that in some countries Steam provides much better prices, but for all the North American gamers, can you explain why you choose a more expensive Steam copy over a much cheaper physical copy? My eyes bleed everytime I look at Steam prices for new games, yet Im always seeing people praising Steam and digital downloads.

90% of you guys are completely missing the point of this thread.

I understand what you are saying and agree completely....i havent brought a new game from steam in a very long time, i live in ireland and the prices here are similar to yours, more expensive than retail and take longer to go down in price. Steam sales on the other hand, if you can wait for them, are brilliant! And you gonna have to get used to peopleon this forum missing your valid point completely and narrow mindly sticking to their usually biased opinion! You can see it in basically every thread!

oh and goodluck experiencing things like this when it comes to physical media (humble bundle 3), which is steam activatible

USBxDVD

Why would you want to activate a game on Steam when you can just install it and add the shortcut to your Steams list. The only difference is youre not giving Steam ownership of your CD-key. Why would anyone want to do that?

because i like having my games marked as steam purchased since AGAIN, you have the join game option if it has mulitplayer, it counts time played, and it supports achievements. pretty much all the games in that bundle will give you this feature when activated on steam.

also AGAIN, you've been caught talking about stuff you have no idea about, since on top of activating your humble bundle on steam you can still at any point redownload the non-drm versions easily from the link they send you in your email.

so contrary to what you said and believe, it would actually be very dumb NOT to activate your bundle on steam...

Sorry for not know anything about Humble Bundle 3. I sincerely apologize.

Also, I have Bad Company 2 on Steam. There is no join game option for it. In fact, Steam does NOTHING but launch the game. Even the updates are handled by the updater.exe. Not all games have Steam integration.

When you have to call your opponents irrational, you've lost. Just because you disagree with an argument does not mean it is without merit. The same is true of calling someone a liar - it's pretty much a free win for me when people finally fall back on that.

I never have or will pay full price for a Steam game. Most I paid was 45 for pre ordering The Witcher 2.

I don't pledge any allegiance to Steam, just give me sales.

for me it's a cheap + no discs (big plus).

And if you're asking why PC gaming then the answer because I could tweak the game mechanics if it was broken (e.g. removing lost planet stupid energy bar, etc..), or enable trainers if I don't have the time to grind in RPGs. Also, the graphic mods are huge plus.

Unlike a lot of people i read the post and understand he's not talking about sale items. Black Ops cost more on Steam than any retailer in the UK yet my mates bought it because from what i gather they are too lazy to go into town and save £10... I don't quite understand why people buy on steam either when Amazon can get it to your letterbox for cheaper and with free delivery. Fanboyism i recon: "Im a PC gamer so if i don;t buy from steam i'm corrupting my status!". Kind of thing.

Convenience, I've bought Witcher 2 off GOG, Shogun 2 at launch on Steam, though it is quite rare for me to buy digital games at full price. I get the full game, and digital versions of any manuals or whatever, someone had to work on making the game either way, and whether the manual went through a printing press or not, does not make its contents take less effort. Digital copies cut overhead costs, but if more money can go to the developers, and steam to continue doing what its doing, I'm all for it.

[QUOTE="ferret-gamer"] It isn't uncommon for games on steam to have a pre order discount like Deus Ex has. And even now there are plenty of upcoming games at the same price as the retail version. RAGE, Dead Island, Driver for example. Steam always has the base retail price for upcoming and new games if they don't already have a discount. They never charge more than retail.

ferret-gamer

Pre-order discounts should be a given. Steam should have to give pre-order discounts to persuade us to buy from them considering the disadvantages of digital downloads. And about the upcoming releases being priced the same as retail. Theres nothing special about that. That too should be the very least they can do considering the disadvantages of digital downloads and benefits of owning a physical copy of the game. Steam never charges more than the MSRP. But they definitely do charge more than retail.

Firstly, do you know what MSRP stands for? Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price aka the standard retail pricing. And there are no significant disadvantages to buying from steam, no paper manual, fewer and fewer boxed games have those, and you can just print the online one out. No box, print out hte box art and put it in a 25 cent dvd case, no disc, back the game up onto a disc. The only legitimate disadvantage is for limited edition games.

Any game that has more than a 3 page manual is worth getting the hardcopy @ the same price.

I haven't read a manual, EVER. I flip through them to look at the pictures sometimes. This only works with nintendo games which still have color manuals. But on PC NO I dont ever want extra crap to deal with. Give me a digital manual and be done with it.

I only buy on Steam when the games I want are on sale for dirt cheap.

AmazonTreeBoa
For this reason. Also because its convenient. If you wait until the have their Summer sale, or Christmas holiday sale then you can pick up an obscene amount of games for next to nothing. During their summer sale earlier this month, I picked up: Universe at War Command and Conquer 3 Command and Conquer 3 Kane's Wrath Frozen Synapse Cities XL 2011 one other Indie game I can't remember all for around $60. That's 6 games for the price of one new PS3 game. Cities XL 2011 is a new game regular price $50. Frozen Synapse is regular price $25, so those two weren't as cheap as the others and made up half of my cost. I got both C&C games for $10 total. Older games will usually cost $5 or less during these mega sales weeks.

That probably speaks more to the games you play than anything. Try jumping into arma2 without going through the manual.

LINK"This currently DOES NOT work on the steam version". Ive tried installing the exact version and it didnt work properly. It might work now using a newer version but it didnt before. And compatibility will be broken if Rockstar releases a patch that you dont have a choice whether to install or not install.

USBxDVD

keywoard: currently people are working on it.

With the non-Steam version, there would be no need for the word "currently" It would be "has and always will work". Its nice that you ignored that point though and focused on the hope that the modders would come to the rescue.

You still have no idea what you're talking about. It works on the steam version. I repeat: IT WORKS ON THE STEAM VERSION. You have to downgrade it to a previous version and ICEnhancer works fine.

Part of my convenience of buying from steam is I play on a gaming laptop, so I can play these games anywhere. I picked up Batman AA for $7.50 and can play it anywhere. I have Mirror's Edge ($5), Burnout Paradise ultimate box (paid less than $10 for it), etc. All on the go.

I got X3:Reunion, off steam, comes with a digital manual, I can open it on one monitor and the game on another for any cheat sheets and stuff, I find it easier.

[QUOTE="ferret-gamer"] And sometimes steam is cheaper than retail. Deus Ex: HR is $45 on steam, but in stores or on amazon it is $50

ferret-gamer

And thats one good exception.

That's probably how it should play out in theory, but in reality when I swing over to Amazon I generally see cheaper prices there for every game I check.

I did for a long time too, after I had a co-op work placement for almost a year with 2 monitors, it was hard to go back to one, so I ended up getting another. :P

I love how people think that a value of a game is given to it by being put onto a round piece of plastic, that's hilarious.
