Also, for those who think DOA is so bad, keep in mind the last 2 installments of DOA have scored higher then the last 2 installments of Soul Caliburosusfaith
Soul Calibur isn't being discussed here, it's comparing VF to DoA.

I haven't played the latest DOA; DOA4 yet but I heard that their is a problem in blocking your opponents attacks? Can any of you guys confirm this?

The thing with DOA is that the latest one out, is by far, the best one yet.

With Tekken, everyone will tell you that Tekken 3 is the best ever. Tekken 4 was a mess and I'm really glad to see Namco listen to the fans, and they brought us what we wanted in Tekken 5.

Tekken 6 vs. Dead or Alive 5 is going to be one of the biggest events in fighting game history.

A problem? You can't turtle, if that's what you mean... I wouldn't call that a problem. It's a pretty offensive-styled game.

Uhh no, you can block attacks just fine. Doa4 has gaurd breaks and gaurd crush attacks though, but they're usually slow to execute and very few of them grant frame advantage if that's what you're referring to

Really? I'm not very informed, don't really follow Tecmo that much. That's sad for me. It was an acceptable way to look at some hotness without my wife getting mad. :)

I have always found the VF series better than any other fighter with the exception of Soul Caliber, although I prefer VF4 to SC2 :?.  VF takes a lot more time to get the most out of it though and that is why these pick up and play easily games like DOA and Tekken seem to be more popular imo.  As for online do you people not have any freinds in r/l or something? I much prefer playing against somebody I know while we have a drink to a stranger over the net.

Yea but if you're serious about fighting games, odds are your friends aren't nearly on your skill level. It difficult for ANYONE to find high level local competition with people they actually like. Online really broadens those horizons. I have people in my state that play DOA4 as well, and some of my friends even will play with me, but it's not fun, cuz I hafta "play bad" and make em think they're good, otherwise I just slaughter them repeatedly and they have no fun

I can't believe this thread still rages on.

I know that a lot of people don't take kindly on the lack of online matching. However that doesn't dimish the quality of the game, if you have someone to play against you'll find that Virtua Fighter 5 is a deep and enjoyable fighting game.

But the thing is, I did play a lot of fighting games with friends and other people when I hosted parties or just hanging out plenty of times. Not as many times as I did in the arcades though. I'm as serious as a heart attack when it comes to fighting games. Guess you had to have been there during the whole Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and SNK thing during the 90s. When I was in college (1999-2003) in Durham, NC, there was a huge faction of people in the RDU area or NC that were serious about competition. It was all Tekken, all the time. Tekken 3 was godly in the arcades, back in a time when they exsisted everywhere. As the later games came out, the crowds dwindled. When I finally got the chance to play Tekken 5 : DR, it wasn't the same.

That's why online is important.  And probably the only reason I continue to play and try to get better at Dead or Alive.

That doesn't mean Virtua Fighter isn't a superior game. The controls work so much better, and just because it lacks online play doesn't really weigh the game down.

Yes, nothing can replace the arcades but online is actually what caused the arcades to die. There is no way to revive the arcades now so it's kind of mandatory for a fighting game to have online. Nothing is a great as owning someone in front of crowds of people.

You're bound to have a friend who can completely own you, or at least give you some trouble. Unless, of course, you have no friends, which in that case, I'm sorry.

I was thinking the same thing. When it was DOA 3 vs Tekken 4 and Virtua Fighter 4 I would have picked VF and Tekken over DOA and wouldn't have been able to choose between them for a winner. With DOA 4 I now consider it to be with Tekken and VF in the way that I don't think it's a lesser game anymore and I now can't pick between any of them. They all have their charms. Soul Calibur on the other hand used to be the only one I would ever say was my favorite but after SC3 it's in my bad book.

I guess I'm lucky then.

But, then again, if a fighting game was truly groundbreaking, wouldn't the AI be so good you wouldn't need anybody else to play with you? I'm also going to go ahead and say that online for Virtua Fighter 5 is inevitable, even if it hasn't been announced yet.

I wouldn't say it's inevitable since AM2 have said it already that it won't.

All I'm saying is that Virtua Fighter 5 is an offline fighter and that's that. If people don't have anybody play with, then just don't buy it. The game is obviously aimed at people who do have someone to play against, just like all the last gen fighters that didn't had online and it seems people did had someone to play with, but now that so far just DoA has oline people are saying that nobody has someone to play against.

I don't go calling Dead or Alive flat our crap or trash out of the blue. Why would I bash a game I like. But when compared against what I consider the top 2 3D fighters out there, yeah, maybe I'll fly off the handle some. But c'mon, you know you remember reading about the upcoming 3D fighters in GamePro and EGM in 1993-94 and got excited about the 'next-generation' of fighting games. It's why Tekken and Virtua Fighter are well loved. They're the pillars of the 3D fighting genre.

Namco should have made Death by Degrees the bonus game with Tekken 5. Devil Within was alright, but DBD was not worthy of being it's own game really. As a feature packed in with a fighting game though, it would have made T5 a great value. Kind of like how EA should integrate Head Coach into Madden.

Aren't we condescending, eh? Let it be known that I go out with friends, not stay home and play console games with them. Then again I guess some of us lack the energy move once and awhile.

Either way, to have VF work for you, you must have friends that are:

A) Into games.
B) Into Fighting Games
C) Into playing the same game over and over again.

Since not everybody is blessed with such luck, I guess VF is not something that would be considered a worthwhile purchase to some.

SEGA already said they're willfully not putting online on VF5, so don't count on it. And we're not talking about casual play in fighting games. We're talking about high-level play, like good enough where you go to tournaments to win $$$. It's very difficult to find friends who are that "into" a fighting game, and have the necessary skill, to really pose a challenge to you.

Ummm...how bout no online for VF5...what is this 1999? jeeze fighting games are pointless to play unless you, I don't know, HAVE SOMEONE TO PLAY AGAINST!!! IMO VF5 can't be better than DOA4 on that merrit alone...colmusterd28
DOA4 is great, but its old now and im stick of people only playing ninjas online. Hopefully VF will have online for 360. Thats unacceptable for an xbox game. But i do agree a fighting game is useless without online, it gets boring only playing 3 or 4 different people.

No Online is just showing lazyness on the part of the devs...ANyone who buys in to this "integrity of the game" crap is just a VF fanboy...They had every reason to take the online fighting throne away from DOA4 but they messed up...BAD!

Because playing with someone in the same room stopped in 1999 as well right?

Yeah I prefer playing with a friend than online.

Well if thats the guns your sticking by than I'd like to personally thank Team Ninja for putting online in their game because its been nothing but an amazing experience both performance wise and entertainment wise...Huh, its kinda funny the MS game actually serves the fans while the Sony game is stubborn and leaves the fans out in the cold....huh so true on a larger scale also.....

So you have no friends? Only people that will play you are online people? Anyways, I get your point. No online sucks but what makes a fighter great is the fighter, not the online...
