I'm sure there are plenty of legit reasons to bash CoD, but overall people just like bashing whatever is popular. And CoD is immensely popular so the hate is proportional.
Before CoD it was Halo.

They are similar and on the same engine, but they offer brand new campaigns which are always of good quality, great multiplayer, and good co-op modes, as well as some new things. I know what I'm buying when I buy COD, and I'm happy with it. Don't fix what ain't broken.
That being said, you should look at Black Ops 2. It's making some BIG changes to the series. And hating a game is just stupid. Just ignore a game you don't like, no one makes you buy them.

If you like COD, great for you.
The reason why I'm bothered about this is that it affects other games. Because of how popular it is and how much sales it is getting, other games are trying to copy it which simply lead to them being ruined. I don't like this.
The number of quality games have decreased because of COD. That's why!
Two Cows fighting?!?!?! fight fight fight fight fight!!! It's a "Mad Cow" that has to pretend the 360 and Wii don't exist so that his PS3 can win... VS! A "Fake Cow" that hides behind his PC games! FIGHT!Oh, another thing I really don't like about COD; it's in the same bracket of videogame experiences as Farmville. If you could summarize the experience it offers with a word, i'd chose 'compulsion.' I genuinely believe it's a game that an awful lot of people play without really experiencing anything you'd call 'fun' or 'enjoyment'. Nobody in their right mind sits and plays Farmville with a goofy smile on their face because they're having so much damned fun. It compels you to keep playing with incentives and rewards and goals which are only ever *just* out of your reach, *just* another twenty minutes and you'll get there. Of all the various forms of gaming out there, compulsion-gaming is turd-tier.
And it's not just that COD has distilled that kind of gaming so well, it's that its crept into damn near everything now to try and emulate the experience and get as many gamers hooked on your particular brand of pointless grind.
Gears of War 3 had a horrible grind factor to it.

I'm not one of the guys who are trying to "fit in". It's just because COD releases every damn year with little to no changes. They are not games. They are DLCs and yet they charge £40 for them! This is exactly why people hate COD now.

I often hear that "so many games copy COD" but I don't understand this. I haven't seen any game that has played like COD besides COD. I heard this same thing last gen, only it was with Halo instead.
Some COD elements like perks, customizable weapons etc....may have found their way into other games, but this is because COD is a quality game and is the standard, so it's only natural for other games to borrow this aspect. Just like how many games borrowed elements from Halo, like recharging health etc....

It's strange that we're arguing. :P
Let me make this clear, I have noticed that games aren't like they are now before COD4, they all had their unique things and are different to each other which is excellent. It's only when COD4 existed, the nature of games have altered and it made all of them similar - the developers of those games have been trying to "steal" COD's crowd. I'm surprised you didn't notice this.
The hate is when people started to get fed up with this.
Before , it was due to how COD abused the DLC system and how it became nothing but annually releasing cash grabs.
But let's be real here, CoD is hated mainly (not fully) for people to beat the topic to death for upvotes on Youtube, Reddit, and the likes. Whether it's for people to fit into the hate community or so they don't feel like outcasts on the internet. It's sad, but true.Sure, CoD has become too popular for it's own good, but it's still a solid series (Not MW3, what the fudge...).
Lets not beat about the bush, In most cases, because people think it's cool to go against the grain. A lot of the arguments against it are, ironically, rehashed cliché's picked up from youtube commentors and obtuse 'witty' individuals.
I'm indifferent to it; I've massively gone off military shooters, mainly because of EA and Activision ramming them down my throat of recent years. Furthermore, I much prefer SP-driven gaming; something military FPS' offer very little of.

it's created a situation where activision only has to recycle the same sh!t every year for an entire gen and mouth-breathing brogamers buy it by the millions..resulting in other devs trying to copy it and failing, or thinking the CoD experience is what every gamer wants.

Its the people who play COD more than the game.clyde46Which is pretty funny considering it's the Battlefield fanboys that dislike every CoD video and make dumb comments on every Battlefield clip about how "Durr CoD sucks compared 2 dis luk u fly jets". Maybe in game the CoD fans are worse but on the internet the Battlefield idiots reign supreme.
Like alot of people have stated countless times, most people do not hate CoD, but they DO hate the buisness practices behind it, and those are legitimate things to hate, since they cemented alot of the bad things of this gen.
But CoD? well they are fine I guess, not my kind of games on average, but people seem to enjoy them, fine by me.
What I do not find fine:
Teams working on nothing but CoD, causing the ip to delude, and that much faster with the lack of progression from the coders, While not too apperrent at first (CoD3, WaW) the rst of the CoD games really did feel like expansion packs.
The buisness practice of buying mappacks were somewhat of a letdown at best aswell, I would not have minded it if they were larger, and more spread out, CoD pretty much went on the forefront with taking out new maps in updates, and worse yet, showed that alot of people will buy without question, small mappacks for an near insane premium.
Koticks "Taking the fun out of making games" were a direct reflection on how th CoD games were and likely still are made, a horrible work envioment.
As a follwo up to the above, the whole situation with the heads of IW getting fired, which were shady at best.
Basicly you could feel how the CoD series had become sweatshop items, made at a really low cost, and sold for alot. Them feeling like expansion packs are fine by me, I tend to like exp packs (and yeah, exp packs tend to have atleast 1/2- 1-1 ratio of content of the base game, so they do fit quite well into that mold), so I found the price some insulting. But more then anything else, I dislike CoD, not because of CoD, but because it felt victim to the new standard of Publishers and devs.
No love for gaming, maximising profit, and so againt evolution of a series (remember Activision really disliked how CoD4 came along, till they found out it was popular).
People will counterpoint that "gaming is a buisness". Yeah but it is also a creative process, like Books movies and music. They all need experimentation, and pieces that are ment to drive the standard farwards, if all focused on cashflow, all the above industries would crumble and die because they would not evolve (alot of the most importantt movies in the world, were not critically well recived, imagine if they had been shot down due to the outlook of poor cashflow).
And that is pretty much the direction Activision paved for all to follow, They led alot of Publishers to the mindset ofyearly rehashes insanely high primiums, and low risk (Activision does not have alot of IPs in play, they pretty much milk one or two at a time, till death). (examples of followers, Capcom, Ubisoft, Microsoft).
So CoD seem to catch alot of flak, not due to the games themself, but what went on behind the scenes. On a sidenote, BlOPS2 looks differnet, I won't say anything pro or con the game till it is out, but sound like the departure many people wanted, an evolution of the series, not a repetition.
More popular title gets more hate.
No one here is gonna be hating on the niche RPGs because only the fans are the one who buys them
People hated it because their favourite lazy developers started copying.
Don't blame IW or Treyarch, blame Crytek and pretty much anyone who butchered what made their games unique for more money.

This. This. This
It's like Battlefield fanboys spend more time talking how great Battlefield is than actually playing it.
This is what some of the people who don't like them list their reasons why
1- Series being released every year and being milked.
2- Since COD4, all the COD games after it became the same but with worse quality while COD4 was good. Yeah they sell well but former fans of COD who stopped playing them felt that the series is ruined because of the rehashes. It may still attract a lot of people playing them but the original fans feel that the series went downhill.
3- Getting the praises that it doesn't deserve
4- Effects the whole gaming community since developers are starting to copy COD in their games. And not just new IP but even old series
5- Other games that come out around the time that COD does and they end up not selling well
6- Biased scores that give COD a good rating while other games can get low scores because "they are recycled" when most reviewers don't say this about COD
This list is what I get from people who don't like the cod games. I use to like them but I really think that Activision needs to have the series take a break and actually improve them. I'm not trying to be a COD hater who goes around and bashing them but I wish the series would stop being so milked. But to be fair we see that with sports games like Madden, or Need For Speed, and so far Assassin's Creed. When a series gets milked and looks just like the other games I don't bother with them anymore

as much as I liked the original CoD, they are burning it out to and excess. They release a game then release map packs as quickly as possible. and when its the same dam game since 90% of the appeal is MP, and the game comes out with 12 maps.. its just not worth the $60 price tag for a something that is more of an expansion to the MP.
If they came out with a CoD, scraped the stilly single player, added tons of maps, which include old and new maps, AND some larger maps, along with some new game modes and an editor... I'll buy it. Base Assault is still my favorite game type which was only in CoD:UO
