Not to mention you can achieve the same result with some Velcro.

Cheap. Even civilians own them and slap them on their rifles for fun.

While Doom 3 was sort of bullshit with the whole switching between a flashlight/gun thing, it also does the other flashlight thing that I hate. You know, that crap that developers are still doing, where you can only use your flashlight for a minute before having to either replace or charge the batteries.

Add that to the list of gaming cliches that need to die. Everyone rightfully complained about Doom 3 not letting us use a flashlight and gun at the same time, and yet gamers apparently seem to have just accepted that video game flashlights aren't allowed to work for more than a minute at a time.

Hell in a shitty situation you could duct tape a flashlight to the gun. With a pistol you can easily hold a flashlight in one hand and still keep both hands on the gun for stability.

Nothing "realistic" about only being able to use one or the other. Humans aren't that stupid or uncoordinated.

It wasn't a bad game, but it wasn't what people were expecting from Doom - at least that's how I felt. Doom had big open levels to explore that had lots of variety, with the odd share of puzzles and secrets. It also had big fights against loads of monsters. Doom 3 is a completely different game - even if it is a more realistic representation of how the Doom story would have happened.

I loved Quake 4 though. I don't know why since they're similar games. I think Q4 had more open levels and less of the survival gameplay, as well as having NPC team mates so it wasn't as quiet. Quake 4 was a good successor to Quake II because it improved on the original game while keeping a lot of the elements that characterised it. Doom 3 was so different that people felt disappointed, even if it was still a good game in its own right.

Really.

Because fast and action game turned into slow horror game. Is this is the reason why everyone hated Doom 3? Doom 3 is best Doom game ever made. Im not interesting in Doom 4 if it goes back to "speed movement, unlimited ammo, action game". I want horror game, not action speed hack game.

They hated it because it didn't have the interactive story oriented gameplay that halflife introduced. Doom 3 still used old shool fps shooting mechanisms like in unreal, which were a bit too much for a lot of people. Doom 3 is not for the faint of heart. Dead space is like a kiddies game compared to doom 3.

I loved doom 3 but I made me look over my shoulder while playing though.

I loved Doom 3, but I won't ignore it's faults such as it's incredibly repetitive gameplay and fairly boring linear corridor shooting.

Doesn't even come close to capturing the feel and gameplay of the best Doom game ever made: DOOM 64

edit: The right way to play Doom3 is the BFG edition btw. And no, flashlight or shooting was not and still isn't a good idea.

DOOM 64 indeed was great. I can't believe I forgot about the best DOOM port.

The only 'horror' element of Doom 3 was the specs required to play it at the time. Beyond that it was a bad Doom 2. Doom 4 won't have to try much to be an improvement and given their track record it won't try at all. Doom 4: space marine kills shit just because, brought to you by ID kings of 'just because'.

Bethesda is behind Doom 4 and given that Wolfenstein was amazing, I have high hopes for this

Its not a port though. Completely new game with unique levels, assets and soundtrack.

Doom 3 sucked.

Lets take fun ass doom and make it this slow, boring corridor crawl with fucking key hunts like it's some ghetto system shock. The encounter design and pacing in that game is atrocious.

So you prefer this:

You want game that is not scary but what is casual, has unlimited ammo, fast gameplay, no story and just shoot everything you see. Thats what Doom 1 and Doom 2 were. They were like Painkiller and Quake games.

I want horror, dark as possible, scary, hardcore but you want action, casual and easy and bright.

Sad... casual gaming ruins gaming.

I don't think you have played Doom 1 and 2 have you? They are about the most morbid games I have ever played. It had a super eerie atmosphere about the whole thing. Especially when you get into the hell stages. The level design and the asthetic of "hell" was far more creepy than the totally generic look and feel of Doom 3. The first games actually seemed other worldly unlike the typical dark and gothic look of Doom 3. Hell was a joke in Doom 3 to be honest. The monster design was actually better in the first games too. It's crazy how ID actually designed better levels on such a limited engine that didn't even allow you to look up.

If anything, you're the casual piece of shit for thinking Doom 3 > Doom 1/2. It was a totally different game that had almost nothing in common with the IP apart from the title and vague setting. You might like what Doom 3 was doing better than what the original games did, but that's your preference. As a Doom game, Doom 3 is shit.

You have too much imagination. Doom 1 & 2 was the beginning of 3d shooters and it wasn't even completely 3d. Morbid isn't really something to describe doom, mortal kombat was way more morbid , so was resident evil. I'm not saying doom 1 & 2 weren't fun games, but for me they weren't because those games didn't have the graphical capacities to make a 3d game interesting.

But you can't discuss taste, still saying doom is more creepy than doom 3 is like saying pole position is a better racing game than gran tourismo.

I enjoyed Doom 3 for what it was but as a sequel to other Doom games it wasnt the same type of gameplay. Same goes for Quake 4. Iv tried playing through Doom3 again a few months ago when that new version came out but got bored after about an hour of playing. I also tried Brutal Doom and ended up playing all the early Doom and Doom 2 games from start to finish and loving every minute of it.

Doom 3 got really repetitive and tried to delve into the horror aspect of it, relying heavily on jump scares that frankly got tiring.. I would argue that Doom 3 got knocked on because of the name if anything.. It really wasn't a doom game compared to the first two which was fast paced and had you facing tons of guys.. Honestly the true sequel to Doom 2 would have to be the Painkiller series..

I honestly love the Xbox 360 versions of Doom 1 and Doom 2.. The 360 control layout for the game is absolutely perfect, and the game allows up to four player split screen..

Wow, you have no idea what you're talking about there, young'un.

In 1993 DOOM was as scary, dark and hardcore as video games get.

22 years later it's not scary anymore, duh.

But mechanically, it's still a ton of fun to play to this day.

Mechanically, DOOM 3 was dead on arrival and it's not getting better with age.

Cheap jump scares, dull shooting mechanics and weak weapon sounds, some of the worst ragdoll animations in business, dat flashlight.

If it were to lose its, admittadly, still good looking visuals, there's nothing in DOOM 3 to write home about.

Butcher Bay came out 2 months earlier than DOOM 3 and had everything it has to offer and more.

Tl;DR:

22 years later DOOM have lost all of its scares, but still a damn good game.

22 years later DOOM 3 will only be remembered as one of the numerous letdowns of gaming.

Word. Funny thing is, Brutal DOOM is not just better than post-Quake 2 id Software shooters.

It's better than almost any shooter on the market, atm.

I enjoyed Doom 3 quite a bit...its just that the later levels gradually became stale and redundant. Also, I thought that whole "switch the flashlight to use a weapon" was pretty annoying. Why not just attach the flashlight to the gun like all other games?

I think they named their games wrong. DOOM 3 should've been just DOOM. AND DOOM (2016) should've been DOOM 3.
