So far this gen, the most dominate genre appears to be FPS. With so far around ~65 games, with it's runner up having around less than half that.

FPS games at the end of last gen were declining, and there was only but a decent number around the launch year of the new consoles. But from the end of that its been picking up dramatically.

FPS are tracking ahead of last gen, when the FPS genre was going wild, and all tons of clones and other unique attempts were trying to capitalize on the high-multi-million selling genre.

Was odd is that this is excluding the 360 year head start (which includes the PC titles in that period) and even with that, this gen will pass that by the end of they year. But it's not really as it seems, FPS is pretty much taking down other genres so far this gen. As multiple genre's have decreased this gen within the same period of time as last gen. Which means those devs are either looking at making a game in a different field or joining the FPS wagon.

But why is the FPS so popular, and apparently, more popular than ever? Quick reflexes and Ease of access can apply to many other genres. There's actually less flexibility with a FPS than a TPS. Although you can do many unique things, the way TPS can change up the gameplay FPS games can't do.

So what's left? Only probability I can think of is the genre pulls in so much money, in a day with developers crashing and burning, and panicking and bad financials, it's still a semi-safe bet.

Cause it is all about the multiplayer and community now.

While I love the 360 it ruined playing single player games for me I just don't get the enjoyment out of it like I use to. I like to be online playing with people, and or talking with friends or making new ones.

On the rare occasion I play a single play game I'm still usually partied up with some people shootin the shit and catching up

I'm pretty bored of them. I know there is the crowd in the hardcore gaming community that like to pretend they are above all the complaining and say "they're good games though, get over it", but nah, I am about done with them. Doesn't help though that Halo 5 and Battlefront look good as ****. Maybe that's why they keep appealing to people, they change something up every once in a while like the setting and use established IP's (Battlefront).

because most shooters have a lot of fast action and usually get rid of the grindy timesinks that have become unnecessary staples in a lot of genres of games. Stuff like sorting inventory and time consuming crafting that usually serves no purpose. They are also twitch based which appeals to a lot of people. its the same reason fighting games are popular.

Because FPS games are fun, and shooters have ALWAYS been some of the most popular games, going back 35 years to Asteroids.

I honestly thinkg the perspective has alot to do with it.

FPS games tend to put you in a World, instead of observing a world. I think more people easier feels connected to the surrounding game (SP & MP)

Part of said reason is that it appears thatFPS games Sells well, but even other genres in First person view are doing exceptionally well. So it might be something to do with that.

Also it has the fastest more precise multiplayer on average. So MP wise it is likely much more engaging.

Ofcourse I might be wrong.

"Dudebros" is a term commonly employed by gamers with low self-esteem in a futile attempt to elevate themselves over the "dudebro" plebeian masses, therefore giving themselves some modicum of personal worth and dignity. Said gamers usually have a romanticized delusion that they belong to a group of intelligent, refined gamers with aristocratic tastes and fail to realize that all they are doing is playing video games, an activity with zero social utility or intellectual value for mankind.

tl;dr

I am better than them because instead of just eating human excrement like they do, I sprinkle paprika on top of it first. This makes me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside.

Which is also filled with tons and tons of garbage, early access, and indies. I put it separate as I put mobile separate.

Considering only 5% of thoise games have an impact as well, it's not nearly even worth the effort, for Racing game made by kyle in his basement get 40 downloads and count it.

I'm sorry I know you aren't comparing steams disorganized large amount of multiple garbage access games and tons of indies, along with bigger products and older products that are hard to navigate to without knowing the name of the game you're looking for, to sony's small indie store doesn't make sense.

Steam is basically mobile. I don't put it with the PC platform, and given the recent actions of Valve, they are also trying to do just that. It's basically it's own platform.

It's a fairly simple idea, with intuitive input (move, aim, shoot). You are in direct control in a way you are not in other genres (compare with Danny's Rocket League vid), which makes the competetive aspect feel better. Oh and violence.

@TigerSuperman: I'm guessing: Because it offer a realistic view?

It was a time FPS was my most prefered games and tps was not interesting me at all but now they're back and I like tps a lot now. But of course fps still the best to me too.

Yes yes... meanwhile Sony's PS4 store layout is not only horrible but empty. and limited by the very aspect you hate... until they actually go ahead and do it... then you will be all over it.

IF you can't navigate around steam, then your an idiot, plain and simple "wade through the crap" ... millions of ways to sort on it. you sound like those peasant idiots that say "Mods are s*it because 95% of them are crap and its hard to find good ones" .... if you don't know how to use basic internet functions maybe... e.g borderline window licking.

Sony's not going to have thousands of games and Sony's not trying to seprate the PS4 from the PS4 like Steam is from PC by basically decalring itself it's own platform. None of it is comparable, and that's why I excluded steam just like I excluded mobile, it's basically a different platform. Same why I wouldn't use mobile in a thread similar to this with handhelds.

Also no you're wrong, steam has tons of games, and some of those games are hard to find, it is disorganized, unless you know the name of the game you are lookng for. If you are looking a a Rpg, that was released on steam say 2010 and it wasn't even a cult favorite good luck. But that's bother conversation.

Point is steam would make more sense to comapre with tiself like mobile, instead of lumping it with consoles and other means of PC play.

Because it's the most engaging form of gaming with the most life like representation of your viewpoint in reality, it's really that simple. Third person games don't have the same connection with the player, you're controlling another person you can see and watch on screen, in first person perspective you take on the role of this character, you are them.

Steam is expanding to other PCs ... it will never stop supporting windows, and none of this has any effect on anything.

Steam is still apart of the PC platform, no amount of spin you put on it makes sense... the mobile comparison (other than many bad apps) is poor at best. Linux and Mac exist as PCs ... VALVE is trying to spread out more to them as well.

@TigerSuperman: isn't this based on your precious thread where you excluded steam? Which is a pretty big part of PC gaming

Which is also filled with tons and tons of garbage, early access, and indies. I put it separate as I put mobile separate.

Considering only 5% of thoise games have an impact as well, it's not nearly even worth the effort, for Racing game made by kyle in his basement get 40 downloads and count it.

Sounds like a opinion rather than a fact.

And it could probably be argued that MOBAs have been the most popular lately

Whoa... we've reached a new peasant low folks....

Can't wait until Sony does it and then it becomes "COOL".

Yes yes... meanwhile Sony's PS4 store layout is not only horrible but empty. and limited by the very aspect you hate... until they actually go ahead and do it... then you will be all over it.

Steam is not part of the PC platform, it works on PC, but it is not the PC platform, when I can buy a game that will work when I put the disc in or download from an alternate source (like the creators main site) but I can also get that same game on steam, that basically proves my point they are different platforms.

Steam is basically mobile in that it has it's own large library of games that are compatible with universal hardware. However I'm not going to spend 1000 years searching through the disorganized library of mobile and steam to count every single game including the majority being DOA or irrelevant, and then adding them to the list.

PC/Xbox One/PS4/WiiU have 36 FPS games so far this gen. Mobile and Steam are excluded. Simple. Have a nice day.

.... so any non-propriety store is now excluded? only Microsoft windows store should count?

not sure if trolling... or just that stupid.

FPS genre is great but almost no one took advantage of it last gen post 2007. It is just yearly rehashes of Modern Military Shooters that are super famous not high skill based one, if they even exist in the first place in this day and age (except few old timers from Valve). And they are famous because they are targeted for lowest common denominator.

I'm sure you can point where I said this. Oh wait, you can't you literally just made something up and said I stated it.

Let's try this again, where did I say anything about the Microsoft store? And why is that all of a sudden the only way to by PC games.

You've gone mad clearly. Yeah I'm just going to let you go pal.

Actually for quite a few years after 2007 we had quite a few FPS outside of military shooters, and some unique atempts as well. it was the end of 2010 during the holiday season did we see those games kind of become more and more limited.

@TigerSuperman Then articulate your point better. You can't claim steam is its own platform. it's plain stupid.

What platforms does steam place games on? PCs. There is no debate here, just you bending the rules to suit your own little delusion.
