So far this gen, the most dominate genre appears to be FPS. With so far around ~65 games, with it's runner up having around less than half that.
FPS games at the end of last gen were declining, and there was only but a decent number around the launch year of the new consoles. But from the end of that its been picking up dramatically.
FPS are tracking ahead of last gen, when the FPS genre was going wild, and all tons of clones and other unique attempts were trying to capitalize on the high-multi-million selling genre.
Was odd is that this is excluding the 360 year head start (which includes the PC titles in that period) and even with that, this gen will pass that by the end of they year. But it's not really as it seems, FPS is pretty much taking down other genres so far this gen. As multiple genre's have decreased this gen within the same period of time as last gen. Which means those devs are either looking at making a game in a different field or joining the FPS wagon.
But why is the FPS so popular, and apparently, more popular than ever? Quick reflexes and Ease of access can apply to many other genres. There's actually less flexibility with a FPS than a TPS. Although you can do many unique things, the way TPS can change up the gameplay FPS games can't do.
So what's left? Only probability I can think of is the genre pulls in so much money, in a day with developers crashing and burning, and panicking and bad financials, it's still a semi-safe bet.
