Why does Halo 3 have such ugly graphics?

Graphics whores enjoy showing off their freakin' games graphics to their friends more than playing them. That is why they are graphics whores and not gamers, and can never be. Gameplay is what matters, and that is why Chrono Trigger is still one, if not the best game of all time.

I love shiny visuals, all on a fancy new video card - so by that logic im a graphics whore. Yet I still like old games, or games with average visuals.
Besides a game can have steller visuals and great gamepaly.

I'm not saying that people who enjoy quality graphics are graphics whores. I'm saying that people who think L.A.I.R. is better than Punch Out for the NES are graphics whores.

It's probably got the best lighting and particle effects seen to date in a console shooter, and Halo's art design has always been stand-out (with some repetitive level design hurting it occasionally).

from that shot it looks good..

but i knowwhat you mean i thought the graphics were pretty poor.. quite jaggy and it looked like the same engine as halo2 to me apart from the lighting effects which were good..

Did you ever see that blog post someone made where he de-saturated a pic of Halo 3 so that its colors would more closely resemble Gears of War? People who didn't like Halo 3's graphics thought it looked much better in the de-saturated pic. It was pretty telling.

That would actually be pretty unfortunate. I've already heard some complaining about Spore that it looks "too kiddy", and to hear that about a game with the innovative concepts of Spore is simultaneously unbelievable and very believable to me.

Its certainly not the 360 best looking game, and indoor envireonements do look particularly bad, but outdoors the game can be absolutely gorgous with enough going on.

Incidentally, does bungie have the absolute worst art department in the world when it comes to making humans? They have always looked terrible in there games.

Halo 3 looks very good. The lighting is just fantastic

Oh I will very soon... Im getting it with twilight princess, SMG, Metroid and SSBB.

Cant wait its so fun! played metroid for about 20mins at a mates house... its absolutaly amazing seriously one of the best adventure shooters ever created alsmot as good as the first.

Uhh those pictures of the 'fantastic' textures. Wahoo, it is a small image of portion of a surface. Honestly the game is a mixed bag with textures. Some look very nice, others are ugly as hell.skrat_01

Really? Halo 1's graphics were amazing at the time and so was Halo 2's. But Halo 3's graphics pales in comparison against some of the games this year. I guess it's because of the open space in the game compared to other games out there.

And even if this is true, the plot was terrible in Halo 3.

? Threater and regular gameplay both have the same graphics. Theater mode rebuilds the game the way it was played using code, they don't up the graphics.

Halo's graphics very from really bland looking to really good. The reason is because Halo's engine runs around VERY good lighting, so when there isn't much of it going on, some pieces of it look like crap. That's why you see such variation in the quality of the game's graphics.
