I find jaggies really annoying, so I'd rather have 720p with 2xAA than 1080p with no AA. It's not like I can really tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on my 26" Bravia anyway...

seanmcloughlin

I find that at 1080p you need less AA.

That's true, but aliasing is still quite noticeable to me at 1080p.

Of course, I was just openly expressing a though :P

Thank God though that on PC I can change the AA method if I want for better frames. I am in love with SMAA now.

Which would you rather play?

Zevante101

It's the same game, the gameplay doesn't change no matter how crisp or clean the graphics are. My opinion is gameplay matters a lot more then graphics. If graphics were everything, I wouldn't be able to replay some of the ps1 classics I'm playing right now.

I don't think anyone was putting graphics over gameplay (well, some do but doesn't matter). The question was why higher resolutions are important and I think some valid points were made.

Sure, a console doesn't need a razro-sharp picture to look decent (considering you're watching the TV screen from a distance) but that doesn't negate the crispness a true 1080p res offers (with good AA and AF levels, of course). It's also easier to see things and better for the eyes.

for sure gameplay > graphics. This is why the indie game market exists and thrives. However, graphics and gameplay > gameplay. Therefore, game on the right is "better"

because PC gamers like making a big deal about things tha they know console gamers can't achieve. I might just have a bad eye but I don't real notice a diffenace. For Example Wipeout HD which is 1080p looks amazing, but so does GoW 3 which probably isn't even 720p. I would rather have good gameplay and all the stuff you listed.

inb4uall
Agreed. I dont see the difference. I think its because we dont care to look for it. Some will say "you have low standards" but I would rather have them, then. I get to enjoy more that way, instead of turning away from games because of nitpicking bs.

Agreed, I get those vibes fairly often here (associated with the PC elitists). It's funny because the gaming industry advances so quickly, that the 'graphics king' can only remain so for about a year or two (on average). Thus, graphics move to fast to really be the saving grace of a game because another game will just top it right after.

The desire for a "clean" picture has got nothing to do with "PC elitists" or "graphics whoring"...

Here is the difference between Wind Waker running on a GC/Wii in SD and in HD res on Dolphin emulator:

There's a reason why "HD remakes" exist...

Sorry, we cannot talk about emulators like Dolphin here. And it is not wise to post images from that emulator as well.

Yes it looks much clearer. But if the game is fun to play, I dont mind the SD GC/Wii version. That is what boggles some of us. It isnt a deal breaker to some of us, because it's still playable. It was playable before HD, now it isnt? Thats like after seeing pro basketball or football, not being able to enjoy college or high school ball. Its still exciting.

Of course, but I don't think anyone can negate that a higher res simply makes it a lot better to look at ;)

And in a game with a great art-style that does come to expression.

And stretch it across my 28" monitor that goes up to 1200p...looks blurry as hell, lol.

Well, I'm playing Xenoblade right now and my jaw has dropped more times playing this game than any of the big budget HD games this gen... at least on consoles.

So there's definitely more to graphics than resolution.

This is a discussion about graphics and why they make such a big difference, not about graphics vs gameplay. Yes I get your point about the game still being fun, but for a small cost of time/money for it to look a little better for the (hopefully long, considering it's supposedly a good game) time you are playing is worth it. When you are sucked into the experience and having a good time and then see pixels all over the place from a low resolution + no aa it kind of takes you out of it.

Hell yes. Who needs a warm bed when you've got a sweet rig like mine?

Who needs a bedroom? You walk through the door and the room you're in is all you get. ;)

Resolution matters because it affects texture quality, lighting quality, draw distance, etc. I think it was a little deceptive to market this generation of consoles as the "HD Era" when most games are sub-HD. Microsoft and Sony should have made 720p native a requirement across the board, and hopefully next generation all of the console manufactures make 1080p native required for games.

540p vs 720p maybe minimal, but 540p vs 1080p is not, and the latter is what most of us are used to. 540p looks really blocky after that.

When you sit 5 feet from your HDTV I think resolution hardly maters. Other things like texture quality would make a bigger difference at that point.

Because if you dont have a decent resolution, many of those things look like garbage. Like playing a 360p/480p youtube video on an HD monitor, it's not very pretty

Klipsh

Yeah and the consoles are 2005 based hardware!? I'd much rather have a lower resolution to push the graphics further, cause in the end..it's still a VIDEO game, some don't care for the jags and blur, it still looks good enough. Epecially makes sense when the hardware needs to last and still pump out better graphics.

They are a very small part of what makes a truly great game great. Obviously a good graphics aren't a bad thing, but the way this board can't seem to actually talk about other aspects of a game beyond visuals is pathetic. As good as Crysis looks it wouldn't be so loved if it wasn't for the awesome on the fly driven gameplay. Visuals can only carry a game so far.

Yes and moooar yes. People who don't care about 1080p probably haven't even played over 720p...

wa-wait a minute, if talking consoles how can that be a minimum,(we are talking 6-7years old consoles guys and when next gen hasnt started yet ? or is it because you guys have pc's and thats the only reason you can say this ? , but i think its plausible that next gen is 1080p or at least that could be sweet.

In some genres I think it matters a lot and others not so much. For FPS with open spaces it really does help to have a high resolution. Though I doubt games like Arma or Crysis 1 would work well on consoles even at 720p resolution. I even had trouble playing with Halo 3, ODST and Reach on a TV at whatever resolution they were and I wish they would port these games to PC like they did with the Halo games last gen.

What's the point of having texture quality if you can't see it?
