I'm immune to nostalgia because of my objective nature :PI love a game one day, and bash its sequel like there's no tomorrow!

Nostalgia works both ways aswell. Those who say SM64 is better than Galaxy need to wake up.

SuperFlakeman

I don't really care about which one is better. I can play both on the Wii.

If it's any comfort, the top games in PC/PS3/360 right now will also be considered crap and nostalgia by future generations of gamers.

If it were nostalgia, how is it that I like each zelda game no matter when they came out or what system?

I admit that OoT was basically my favorite game back then, but even now I can go back and play it and love it, same goes for Wind Waker and MM.

On the other hand, other games like Conker's, Phantasy Star, and other of my favorite games I used to love, my absolute most favorite games ever, I try to play them now, and it's just not the same. I think that when I think of about the game, it's nostalgia taking over and making me want to play the game, but when I do actually play, it's like... I wish I was 10 again, because these games were so fun. Same goes for Mario Party, I can't really play it like I used to, even with friends, SSB too.

Paper Mario, and Zelda from N64 were my favorite games, and I can go back right now and play them, and they will still be amazing.

Phantasy Star Online, Conkers, Mario Party, and SSB, I used to love at the same time as OoT, but when I try to play them now, it's not the same.

So what I'm trying to say, is that the games that everyone is bashing isn't really nostalgia, but they are just good games. At least for me.

Thats not what I'm saying at all.

Metal Gear - been around forever. I loved it back then in the 8 bit days and all the way up through MGS3. Dont like anything that came afterwards.

Final Fantasy - Another one that I've loved since the 8 bit days. Probably my favorite series of all time. Cant stand it now.

I wont go through the whole list as I'm sure you get the point. I loved these games in my youth and loved them for years, but there isnt enough nostalgia in the world to make me enjoy the newer iterations.

My point. I enjoy new Mario and Zelda games because they are still outstanding games. Nostalgia is not enough to make me stick with a series.

Wiimotefan

Yea, but it is a consideration. I don't know where anybody got the idea that people are claiming it's the ONLY reason someone can like a game. That's ridiculous to say. But I've not seen one person assert this anywhere, and if someone has please point me to it. But nostagia IS part of it. It gives a game the benefit of the doubt from the get-go. It makes people approach a game with a certain mindset and makes them more likely to overlook or downplay flaws.

I hear so many people say the only reason Zelda and Mario games are so popular is because of Nostalgia, but why doesnt this work for other game series?

I can say the same thing about any game series that has been around for multiple generations.

Just because I am a fan of a series doesnt mean I only like the current release because I like the older games.

Is MGS4 a great game because of Nostalgia? No.

Is The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword a great game because of Nostalgia? No.

Everyone needs to stop having their heads shoved so far up their asses and realize a game can be good without Nostalgia.

RyanShazam

It effects all games. Nintendo just happens to be in the situation of having much older franchises that have been good for a long time. Saying there is nostalgia doesn't mean they are bad games. They could easily be great games. It means they get hyped and talked about as better as they really are for no other notable reason.

This whole nostalgia excuse gets thrown around EVERY time a nintendo game gets high accolades :|

I dont know about that, at least not for me. If a game comes from a long loved series I tend to be the exact opposite, overly critical. I probably would have enjoyed FFXIII if I didnt know what the series used to be. I could have enjoyed MGS4 if I wasnt comparing it to previous titles. I would have loved the new Castlevania, but it just wasnt up to my expectations of the series. I've been a Ninja Gaiden fan since the NES, but Ninja Gaiden 3 already looks dissapointing. I could go on, but you get the point. Prior experience only raises the bar for what I expect and makes me even more nit picky.

Even with Nintendo games. I loved Mario on the NES and SNES, but disliked the N64 and Gamecube efforts. I love SMG, SMG2 and NSMBW because they are outstanding, well designed games. Nothing more. They could be re skinned as anything else and I would love them just the same.

Its not so hard to be objective about games. Nostalgia is only strong enough to make me give something a try and that's it.

As for the part in red, it tends to be an extremely overused argument. The reason why this thread was created is because of such arguments.

Yea I know it does but I don't think people are saying it's due all to nostalgia and nothing else. If they have I haven't seen it. I've been posting here since '01 (or '03), but it was under an alt account. I just created this one a few months ago.

It depends on which direction your looking at. The hardcore Nostgic Final Fantasy fans are so Nastalgic about past games that it has caused them not to be able to enjoy a game made in the past 15 years......

Possibly and Possibly.I haven't played either so I cant give you a definite opinion on the games but you can not rule out the merit of the argument that the games are rated high because of their previous games in the franchises due to to nostalgia BTW, MGS =/= Nintendo

I said it before and I'll say it again.I say people like Uncharted because of nostalgia. People grew up watching many movies/TV series similar to uncharted, such as MacGyver and Indiana Jones, they don't want to leave it behind, so they stick with something similar, Uncharted.

It's that easy.

D4W1L4H

you may be a little right here....the answer i always give people when they ask me why i love uncharted so much i always say "because it's the indiana jones game that we never got because movie based video games suck ass" lol....plus the voice acting and direction is always top notch

why is nostalgia perceived as a bad thing in these forums?Giancar

Because:

-No one should be playing old games or games they grew up with, whether they have aged well or not so well (Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Super Smash Bros 1 get criticized for not aging well)

-Nostalgia is the reason that Nintendo games score UNFAIRLY HIGH! They should be 5 or lower.

But gamers can still have some fun. Like Gauntlet Legends for example, I still have fun with that game and GameSpot gave it a 4.3.

because only diots can;t see why this is an issue. nintedno games are usually the only games called the seonc dcoming and used as ownage when they are realeasing or cming out. Thus the massive amount of nostalgic fanboys let these games get away with things such as the game being broken, repetitive, unchanging, dry, etc., etc. Yet games with more polslish or have the same problems but not as much, get knee jabbed for having the problems while nostalgic fanboys call nintedo stuff flawless which is pure BS. This happened with SS mind you., Then the cycle repeats. usually if a game isn;t a Nintendo game (GTAIV for example) It might be hyped to the next coming but people don;t go on pansy rampages about it and when it come out many people, even those who hyped second coming, will not rate the game golden, or if it does, after they play they will realize their mistakes or misjudges which Nintendo fans never do. /thread.

Well, maybe because the Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, and Pokemon games actually do something to keep their praise? Some recent Sonic games got bashed and nostalgia surely didn't help there.

Nostalgia can actually make you not enjoy a game much. It can make a good game bad. It can also make a good game underrated too.

People just can't accept that Nintendo can make their own consoles, handhelds, and games all by themselves. Nintendo has always been making quality games and systems that stand out from the crowd and some people in system wars just don't understand how.

Hey cool man, so how about a discussion in this thread?

http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/28960456/mgs4-is-the-best-game-of-this-gen?page=1

I mean you know soooo much about the MGS series and you seem to know for a fact that MGS4 is the best game ever. Why do you always dodge me? I'd love to have a real discussion with a hard core MGS fan such as yourself.
