I am really confused about this. Now I know alot of games get hate around here, mostly the popular exclusive ones (Halo 3, MGS4, etc), but BioShock isnt exactly one of those games since it is a multiplat available on all platforms except Wii. So, BioShock was one of the biggest and bestsurprises of 2007 to me, in a year where we had Halo 3, Orange Box, Crysis, Uncharted etc. And I am confused as to why some people refer to this game as horrible. I mean, fundamentally the game is sound. The atmosphere was great, and the combat was fun and fluid. So is it people are just jaded because it was different from System Shock 2, or is it just simply the most overrated game of all time?

P.S. Im looking for legitimate reasons here. Not just that you didnt like it because it wasnt long enough or some crap. Give me some real reasons why the gameplay was broken.

the guns sucked it was too easy and the choices boiled down to yes or no with a similarly derivative ending for said choices also the rpg elements were pointless and the pipe maze hacking game was lame and boring after the 50th time

Gunplay was pretty bad and the game itself didn't motivate me enough to finish it.

Apparently it's an inferior rip-off of System Shock 2. I haven't played it so I wouldn't know. That seems to be the biggest reason aside from the janky shooting mechanics and it's dissapointing RPG elements.

Don't forget how there was no point to using any weapon other than the wrench, which did more damage than the guns.

I'll also add to that, the 'moral' choices don't effect anything in the game, other then if you get a bad ending or not (and some extra items).

The storyline twists were completely predictable and cliche.

The Vita Chambers ruined any challenge the game could have.

Plasmids were boring to use, and the wrench is overpowered.

Tons of useless back tracking to increase the gameplay time.

Horrible boss fights, not memorable at all.

No replay value.

Etc.

The atmosphere in the game was terrific, it was the best part in the game. But other than that, everything else about the game was "meh" to me. It seemed more like a chore to get through the game than that I was excited about a new area or anything. The gunplay was mediocre which is something that really upsets me when I play shooters.

I don't know what else. I just didn't find it as great as some reviewers said.

There's a lot of people who just love to hate on popular things. The same kind of people that like to be "rebels" :) It's kind of cute, actually. For everyone with a legitimate gripe with Bioshock, there are around 20 that just don't like it because it was highly praised. Of course, the majority of people who have played the game, enjoy it, and recognise it as a more than competent FPS, with some nice variety. After all, it didn't get industry wide critical praise for nothing.

The guns sucked? Well I would have to disagree. I thought they were satisfying. The game was about using your powers and guns together anyway, I found no problems with the guns. The choices you made affecting plot is done in a ton of games like Fallout 3 and Fable 2 so I guess theyre broken as well? I never did the pipe maze hacking thing, it wasnt necessary and didnt detract from the game at all. And are you talking about the plasmids and tonics being worthless? I dont really see how they were worthless, it made you more powerful and made playing through the game more enjoyable...

I don't hate it, I just don't think it's amazing. I thought the gunplay was poor and the moral choices turned out to be lame.

The game's atmosphere is fantastic, though.

for easy,i suggest play the game on survivor without vita-chambers,now that will be fun. Guns are pretty cool, but i agree, nothing special the pipe maze does get tedious. But the whole game is amazing..am playing it now as i type this (am at fort frolic ^_^)

I dunno, it just... wasn't good, to me. I didn't really feel like I needed to be more powerful at any point, and I didn't really feel like any plasmids or upgrades really changed me much. Like, see prototype or crackdown or mass effect. You upgrade, and you get a distinct feeling of superiority as compared to your previous self. To the person who said: Play without vitae chambers... that would've made it more difficult, but the other aspects of the game weren't worth going through that, for me.

Agreed. I love the Halo series, I have a lot of fun with Fable, and two of my favorite franchises are Final Fantasy and The Legend of Zelda.

See? I like popular things. I just didn't like Bioshock as much as some people. Nothing "cute" about it really.

Dead Space did everything Bioshock set out to do but better.

Sure, there were no plasmids, but it offered a more interesting story with better twists, better weapons, better atmosphere, and better fights against the monsters. Also, it was actually challenging, unlike Bioshock, which held your hand the entire game and completely removed the penalty of death. You can beat the entire game just by constantly reviving and using the wrench.

That's why they hate it, because it doesn't fall under their taste.. Scores don't prove the quality of games to me.

the atmosphere and environment were like nothing before it and I loved it. I really wanted to like this game so bad but after getting farther into it, I couldn't. As already stated, the game felt clunky. The gunplay wasn't that great. The ai was pretty horrible. The game was WAY too easy, and the last boss fight was a joke. I didn't think the last boss fight would be so short + easy + uneventful. The game started off extremely strong, and it just couldn't stay that way. Hopefully they fixed everything wrong with bioshock in bioshock 2.

Well at the end of the game when I was jacked up on plasmids and had lots of tools at my disposal, taking down big daddies wasnt as scary anymore. The first time you face him is scary (unless you set your traps with the turret and trap him there) and at the end, pretty much a breeze. I guess it might just be once again, a matter of preference. I mean I cant stand SSBB and its very popular.

I'm sorry, I don't believe I specifically indicated you, or anyone, for that matter. Unless you're so self-important you can class yourself as a "people" :) I actually stated that there are bound to be people who have legitimate gripes with it, perhaps that is you. But there are also many more, who hate on it, solely because of the praise it got. And yea, find one mention of me saying it "pleases everyone", something I think you'll struggle with, but please, do try. It'll be cute.

Its more a boss then most games have "bosses". You couldnt just go gung ho shooting at it or you get your butt kicked. It may not be a boss, like it was a seperate room isolated with a huge bar at the top and ten times bigger than you, but it was definitely way more powerful than you.

As I recall, Dead Space had a blue line telling you exactly where to go all the time. Sounds like holding your hand to me. I liked Dead Space too, Im just saying. And I definitely dont think the story was better. Atmosphere, eh, theyre different games. BioShocks not a horror title.

Also, it was actually challenging, unlike Bioshock, which held your hand the entire game and completely removed the penalty of death. You can beat the entire game just by constantly reviving and using the wrench.

As I recall, Dead Space had a blue line telling you exactly where to go all the time. Sounds like holding your hand to me. I liked Dead Space too, Im just saying. And I definitely dont think the story was better. Atmosphere, eh, theyre different games. BioShocks not a horror title.

Telling you where to go =/= completely removing ANY penalty of death. You lose nothing for losing in Bioshock. You don't lose items, health, progress, nothing. You can literally go through the whole game, without ever suffering from any penalty. They don't even BEGIN to compare.

And I didn't really find the story in Bioshock that great. Sure, it had its atmosphere, but Dead Space had just as good of an atmosphere.

Besides, Dead Space is hardly frightening, and I found myself CONSTANTLY thinking "Gee, this is a lot like Bioshock, but way better" while playing Dead Space.

[QUOTE="Jandurin"]the guns sucked it was too easy and the choices boiled down to yes or no with a similarly derivative ending for said choices also the rpg elements were pointless and the pipe maze hacking game was lame and boring after the 50th time

Agreed. I also didn't like the story, perhaps because I already knew the twist and wasn't left in awe of that, though it seemed fairly predictable. And both of the main villains were really lazy, flat characterizations.

bioshock is as much a horror title as dead space and vice versa

Thats not really the goal of the atmosphere, and I dont recall the scare moments like Dead Space did. Its much more of an adventure FPS, like Metroid. In which case, Dead Space is classified as survival horror and Bioshock as sci fi FPS, according to GS.

Edit: Ill take back the metroid prime thing, cause its not really like that either. But it is an adventure FPS,

Nah, not really. Dead Space was a horror game filled with monster closet moments. BioShock is more of a screwed up world with a lot of social/political commentary.

meh, genres don't mean much when a game is borrowing from like 3 or 4. I say bioshock and dead space are the same (or close enough) genre, and so it is. Also, I don't really remember many scares in dead space.

Most people Ive talked to about it consider it one of the scariest survival horror games in a while, so what games are scary?

I don't understand why people hate this game because it has bad ai and gunplay. Imo half life 2's gunplay wasn't that great and the enemy AI was pretty bad, but it was still a pretty damn good game, with the atmosphere, graphics, physics and everything.

SW don't hate Bioshock. In the poll of SW best games ever it was in a very high position.
