Had a chance to listen to these, here's what I think (repetition in video game songs is more normal due to the nature of them needing to loop)

Staff Roll- A little too repetitive, electric guitar messes up the mood of the song too quickly.

Fierce Battle- Started out alright, but I feel like I'm being yelled at by a gang of dogs with megaphones for the rest of the song.

Price of Freedom- Not too bad, got a beat and you could probably dance to it at the beginning : ) I don't know what it is with composers who go electric guitar happy in the middle of songs like this though, it messes with the song's tone. Normal guitar and electric guitar playing the same thing at the same time gets confusing, the instruments don't mix well. Gets a little repetitive.

Under The Apple Tree- Very nice heavy tone at first, starts feeling a little too noisy at some points. I love the rich sound of the electric guitar at the start and throughout during that same refrain. Not whiny at all.

Snow's Theme - I'm not much of a fan of the trend to shift Final Fantasy's music to more a more heavy industrial sound, starting with the intro song/Jecht fight theme in 10, and stand alone it's not horrible, but I think the intended tone can be achieved better with more traditional sounds with a bit of synth/electric thrown in personally.

Blinded By Light- This is a lot better of a traditional Final Fantasy feel at first, then they go and throw the heavy electric instruments in there along with the nice instrumental sounds, I just don't think they mix well. The violin is a welcome touch, but only because it's playing during the absence of the heavy electric stuff.

Don't get offended if you disagree, you like what you like.

FF13's track is my example of perfection. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Best Ending to a JRPG

Best Opening to a JRPG (or this one, both are amazing!)

Heck the Best Sound Track!

fend_oblivion

I see what you did there...

lol Next time, please reveal the name of the song. I click expecting something new only to get Chrono Cross

Oh, and if you love Radical Dreamers, listen to Staff Roll from Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne. The only song that can match Radical Dreamers.

I really like Radical Dreamers a lot more than Staff Roll :

Chrono Cross has a awesome soundtrack, but I think quite a few JRPG in the last decade that IMO have better music like the KH series especially Birth by Sleep.

Yasunori Mitsuda is still awesome through, and speaking of him I been hearing the music of Tsugunai: Atonement.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZoUKbVX7mc&feature=related(IGN really love this one lol)

Not as good as CC's music, but it still great and a very overlooked soundtrack made by Mitsuda.fend_oblivion

I'm hearing the first song as I type. BAM Celtic music!! Really good. Has anyone played this game?

I thought the Celtic parts of the song were awesome, and the other parts. . .meh. I dig Celtic music but just couldn't get into the first song. The second was a bit better although still at times it sounds like a jumbled mess. The 3rd one was good.

If you dig the 3rd one you will completely love this song. I find it far superior. FFXI - Selbina I think Uematsu composed it, however Naoshi Mizuta might have been behind it (FFXI actually had 3 composures so it's hard to know who did what).

Tales of Legendia has an even better soundtrack.

Now this is the best video game music I've ever heard.

Tales of the Abyss also has some epic music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qd-IQ0vweRo

[QUOTE="Scythes777"] Well then in your opinion, do you think One Winged Angel still holds up well today? or do you think most people like it because of nostalgia? IMO I dont think it has aged all that well, it kinda sounds like it came from some Hollywood blockbuster. I listened to the FF6 overworld theme as well but wasnt too impressed with it. Im guessing I need to play the game to get the full effect of the song though. On a somewhat unrelated note, I would like to say that I think the Metroid Prime series has some of the best music and doesnt get enough recognition around here.mythrol

That question is hard for me to answer because it still holds a large amount of nostalgia for me. To me, I couldn't imagine some one listening to this song: One Winged Angel - And not getting chills or at the least liking it. Part of the magic of it I think is that it's a video game and yet DOES sound like a Hollywood blockbuster song.

It seems you haven't heard a lot of Uematsu's songs. I'd suggest this link: Some Random Guy's Top 50 Utematsu Songs I don't agree with the list entirely, but it will give you a decent taste of his music. A large portion of his songs have Celtic / Irish influences.

If I had to pick I'd say some of his best Albums would be FF4, FF7, FF9, FF10, Lost Odyssey (too many people don't give LO's music credit because it's a 360 exclusive).

Edit:

I really think I should give special mentions to these songs because they stand out as true masterpieces.

To Zanarkand

Eyes On Me

Suteki Da Ne (English Tran: Isn't It Beautiful)

FF6 Terra / Overwold Theme

Crystal Theme / FF4 Prelude

Aerith's Theme

FF4 Prologue

FF4 Overworld Theme

FF7 Main Theme

Lost Odyssey's Prologue

Lost Odyssey's Main Theme (It's a Remade version of Prologue)

I could keep going but I have to stop somewhere.

Thanks for all the posts! I will have to listen to these soon, hopefully on Friday I will have time.

Staff Roll - Close your eyes, imagine you are this half human, half demon guy in a world with a scarce amount of humans and a motherload of demons who want to rip your head apart. Now, imagine you recruiting Dante, fighting off demons and going through various environments (like the hospital, Tokyo etc) and then think off how your journey culminates at the end... You should play this game first to understand the beauty of it. Oh, and the electric guitar awakens the beauty of it. One of my friends who listened to this song, didn't say much, but when he heard the guitar he was like "**** That was amazing!!"

Fierce Battle - It's a demon who's yelling. And I think it's speaking Japanese and English backwards. (though some English words can be heard)

Price of Freedom - The entire song is an Em, C, G and D repeat. The extra notes and the electric guitar gives it life.

Under the Apple Tree - Glad you liked the song despite it being even more repetitive than Price of Freedom.

Snow's Theme - I prefer this change.

Blinded By Light - I thought it mixed pretty well.

I ARE DISAGREED. o_O

My dear chap, I guess we are on opposite sides of a thing called Opinion. No offense taken :)

While I agree that Chrono Cross had excellent songs, I personally beleive that the PS2 era has some excellent music as well. Mainly Kingdom Hearts and FFX. I liked DQ8 music as well (sometimes I love it, but sometimes I hate it).

Hahaha, all my teachers suck this semester, which is why I had to drop Calculus. Luckily I have never taken Chemistry, but that might change at college...but hopefully GS DS will be out by Winter so maybe I could play it then if Im not doing a travel abroad program. Sigh, Im just happy Nintendo decided to release SMG2, Sin and Punishment 2 and Metroid Other M before I leave!

No we havent heard anything yet, all we have is a broad 2010 release date. Heck they may have even moved it to a launch title for the 3DS, but I think the new pokemon games will be Nintendo's launch titles for it.

I agree that Chrono Cross has an awesome soundtrack and it's one of my personal favorites.

I like to also mention Baten Kaitos for the Gamecube. That game was pretty good but the soundtrack is incredible to listen to and is very underrated.

FFVII - Judgement Day

FFVIII - Don't be afraid

Golden Sun - Venus Lighthouse

Star Ocean 2 - Mighty Blow

Tales of Vesperia - The Final Showdown

Tales of Legendia - Legendary Sorcerer

Fire Emblem Path of Radiance - Burning Ambition

For combat music I would have to go with Stab the Sword of Justice from Star Ocean 2 and the remake for SO4.

SO2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_oIhDKmeW4&feature=related

SO4 Version

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26KG-pw3wPI&feature=related

Gets you in a good mood to kick the crap out of things.

Selbina loops because it was written for a MMO. I found the first one to be a bit harsh in tone compared to Selbina.

Creid is a great song. I like it a lot.

As far as Celtic / Irish bands go my favorite is Danu. They're more upbeat. If you want mellow I find Enya is very hard to beat; Even though her music is far more diverse than simply Celtic.

Edit: Decided to link a good Danu song for you: Danu - Are You Ready Yet. This is very typical of their music, so if you like it, you will like the rest of their music.

If you haven't heard of Enya - whoa. As far as New Age ****music goes, she has to be the queen. With a mixture Celtic / New Age / Japanese, her music is just great. Her older songs have a stronger Celtic influence but I honestly think she has only gotten better as she's expanded her genre. A few of her most known / greatest songs: Sumiregusa (Sung entirely in Japanese). Only Time. Watermark. The Memory of The Trees. Wild Child (This had to be included due to the creator using Xena footage).

I could easily keep going, but I have to stop myself.

The lack of FFX in this thread is frightening. I don't think enough of you played it or you're just letting nostalgia grab you..

I don't think the songs were that great. Besaid Island is a fun song though :) But this version made by Kabukibear trumps the original.

Fun fact : did you know that Nobuo Uematsu's wife didn't like Suteki Da Ne? She didn't like the song at all.

To Zanarkand gets old fast. Though the song that plays in the Blitzball cutscene in the beginning of the game was super awesome.

I heard the Danu songs. Pretty decent. Though you should get Celtic Dreams. It's pretty awesome.

Enya has a really good, soothing voice though I barely understand what she says.

Though im quite impressed with FFXIII's soundtrack this gen.

EDIT: Posting some Legend of Mana Songs. Always found it to be underappreciated.

Boo, this website says "listen to any song in the world for free" bull! I searched for Amputated and I got nothing.

Anyways, I've never been big on music played in video games so I honestly don't care, but this song is badass.

This thread is for JRPGs so the music in games like Spyro and MGS aren't supposed to be here. They are good songs though.

Is your shame about not caring about music in video games, liking that Mother 3 song, or liking Amputated?

I think we can agree that Yasunori Mitsuda is the man and leave it at that.SmokingBomber
This. The Xenogears' soundtrack is the best I've ever heard.

Oh man, being a music lover and musician, I find music in games to be really important if I am going to consider it a classic. It seems that RPGs always get the best soundtracks, for whatever reasons.

Final Fantasy X has a beautiful song, Wandering Flame - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xShgYPOFCRo&feature=related

Star Ocean The Second Story had another classic song that was used throughout the game - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5NMakAUE_0&feature=related

Chrono Cross? Duh...which one though? This one is hauntingly beautiful - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-ttyCzHVSc&feature=related

Final Fantasy XII had great music, most fall into the category of not being memorable enough...but this piece does - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ieerkbitBo

Xenogears...incredible...this song sounds like it could have been used in Braveheart or something - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBJm7Ca7vVE

Lunar- If you played this game this piece always seemed epic...its kind of dated now, but still fun - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2REXxLSBWVA
