Killzone 3 has a bunch of uncompressed cutscenes, yet they all play at 720p. Kinda defeats the purspose don't you think. Another reason why I prefer PC gaming. It takes full advantage of my monitor.

Cutscene movies in games nowadays look like crap. Some I hear are only 240p compressed video? What happened to the Final Fantasy days where cutscene videos looked amazing? :P Blizzard is probably the only developer I can think of that does some amazing cgi stuff. Elann2008I doubt there is anyone who uses 240p cutscenes in this day and age. Maybe back in the PS1 era but not now. The worst i have seen are just really compressed 720p stuff (looks at mass effect 2)
for one, there just isn't any need to compress things with all that space. secondly, the less compressed the better something looks regardless of resolution.

Elann2008Actually FF13 surpassed SC2 cgus in quality those are even but in quantity and lenght? FF 13 has it in the bag easily.

Oh yes. FF13 looks gorgeous. But it's always Final Fantasy that does it well. They always deliver when it comes to that kinda stuff. Half the game were cutscenes right? But they were damn good. :)
I think FF13 uses in-game graphics for the cutscenes, which I prefer more than cgi.
As far as games like Mass Effect 2 and Gears of War, they are pre-rendered from the game engine and compressed.
being a Pc gamer does not make video cutscenes any better. Most of the games I have played render the cutscenes at 720p or below which looks BAD on a 1080p monitor.

This. Having a nice gaming PC doesn't magically make pre-rendered cutscenes look better at any resolution. :Pbeing a Pc gamer does not make video cutscenes any better. Most of the games I have played render the cutscenes at 720p or below which looks BAD on a 1080p monitor.

I think we all know 720P is the new low... but It was the big deal for TV's about 3/4 years ago. and It doesn't look like TV's are expanding past 1080P. Plus whats the point... once you get so high you can't tell the difference.

you mean 720p is the new standard res. 480p is now low res.
I own and have played Killzone 3, but it has a ton of visual effects that "mask" its graphics. A lot of it has blur. It probably gets more graphical publicity because it's a console game and it does well with the hardware limitations it makes use of. I'll give it credit for that.Hermits are still mad that Killzone 3 gets more Graphical publicity than their $2,000 PC

Killzone 3 has no BLUR, proving you dont own and never played Killzone 3
All motion blur and post processing have been toned down significantly for a more natura look, unlike Crysis 2 which is the blur/ post prcossing king now. Even Digitalfoundry stated that all motion blur has been toned down significantly....
I think all systems have compressed cutscenes... just look at the 360 with FF13 and ME2. On the PC as well if you look at the intro for the WOW game they dont look 1080p native but still look very good, dont know about newr games though. Uncompressed really does take a lot of space. I think the PS3 is the only system where devs can actually use uncopressed video or just really high bit rate coded cutscenes.

Despite being frequent, the cutscenes actually took up a fairly small portion of the game time. CGI was espeically infrequent.

And KZ3 still gets more Graphical Publicity than your Maxed out 1080p 60fps PC game
Battlefield 3 has been getting plenty of publicity lately, though I don't see what that has to do with the visual fidelity of a game.

Pretty much every game on the PC...?
No one has uncompressed cut scenes. 10 minutes of uncompressed HD video would fill up a few blu rays.
What we want is not OVERLY compressed video that is a full 1080p frame. And it CAN be done in relatively little space. A whole 2 hours worth of great blu-ray quality cutscenes can fit in a couple of gigs with the right settings. x.264 for the win.
I hate compressed cutscenes. All the DVD die hards will try and convice you that grainey bink video renders are just as good. They're ugly. I pay $60 for a game I don't wanna see an ugly grainey cutscene.

Better compression like the aforementioned x.264 is still better than uncompressed.
The cutscenes in Killzone 3 are not uncompressed. Less than 10 minutes of uncompressed video at 720p would fill an entire 50gb bluray disc.
Lossless compression=/= uncompressed

Now you're getting into semantics. That's like if somone said "the sky is blue" and you responded "technically at this time of day the sky is considered a light indigo". Going overboard with exact specifications and naming can often be redundant, condesending and obstructive to having a flowing discussion.
Or they can be elucidating.
Again: We are NOT talkign about Uncompressed video. It's not going to happen, it never has happenned.
We are also NOT talking about lossless compression. When it comes to video lossless compression is usually what we refer to as "uncompressed" because frames are usually still losslessly compressed to some extent.
We are tlkaing about good quality, high bit-rate, COMPRESSED video.
That's what we want, that's NOT what we are getting form video game companies who still use crappy bink low bit rate, non optimized compression and 720p (or sometimes even smaller!!) frames.

Pointing out that what people seem to assume is uncompressed video is in fact compressed is not semantics especially when the argument is basically why they didn't use compressed video. .....the whole premise of the argument is flawed and is the reason the debate was not going anywhere regardless of my alleged 'semantics'.
This thread is a fail when somebody actually mentioned FF13 CG to be more realistic than Sc2 CG.
Blizzard produces far better detailed CG than Square since Warcraft 3 vs FFX.
LOL. Killzone 3 cutscenes look better than any PC cutscenes in my library, except for Starcraft II's. You fail for liking PC gaming for this reason as videos are absolutely trash on the system. At least my PS3 games (Killzone 2, Killzone 3, Uncharted 2, MGS4, etc.) have really good looking uncompressed high quality 720p (1080p) scenes...
