Why is 85 average but Spiderman 87 isn't? 85 isn't average. It really isn't.
I'm gonna go with my wild guess and say that it's because they are average games.
Both Gears 4 and 5 seem like pretty good games. Nothing special, just more Gears. A 7/10 sounds like the perfect score for such a game.
But we can also pretend that GameSpot are nothing but cows and downplays everything Xbox whenever they get the chance, if it makes you guys feel better.
I am almost done with ACT 1, I enjoy the writing and characters so far. I find it funny, intelligent and emotional. It is more or less the same Gears, though the combat feels smoother and the weapons punchier. Killing enemies is very satisfying, AI can maneauver pretty good too. But so far it's same ol Gears with some neat extras and insane graphics.
I just want to point out the difference in scores on Uncharted 4. Hey it's a really great game also. But realistically they added nothing to the game play except movable crates.
No one here on GS was saying same old Uncharted, or where is something new? Yet UC4 is rewarded with 10s by the same sources that give Gears 5 (that has added a lot more and doubles in content with huge amounts of actually fun Multi player Modes, and have you seen Digital Foundry?) 7s.
I think at this point most of us have known for years when it comes to GameSpot Reviews, that Xbox games will always get 1 full point knocked off just because. And sadly they are not the only ones. Then there are the outliers that just bomb a game to get more traffic to their site.
Hard to prove, but harder to deny.
Well Gears of War 4 is at 84 and Gears 5 is at 85 on Metacritic and since 8 = great for me I think that those games have reviewed very well. I really enjoyed GoW4 and am really looking forward to playing Gears 5. ?♂️
@Macutchi: Would be genuinely interested to hear your opinion. Personally, I think it's the best in the series, and the best game anywhere since God of War.
high praise indeed glad you're enjoying it mate. let us know how you'd rate it when you've finished it
I didn’t think much of Gears 4. If felt like a cash in on a long but dead franchise.
Gears 5 proved me wrong on the dead part. Coalition did a really great job with this one.
@xhawk27: you predicted it was gonna be goty and blow everything out of the water.
It flopped on gamespot with a 7/10, sitting at 85 MC and once gamespot’s score gets averaged in, it’ll likely drop to an 84.
You still feeling confident?? It’s merely a typical gears game, nothing more.
First I said it could be GOTY Nominee and if Turd bias sites like this one gave the game the score it deserves it would have been. It is now at 86 Forbes gave it a 9/10 and they hate Xbox.
Remember when gamespot gave Days Gone a 5. LOL
I got the Xbox One for cheap, and got in on the GamePass Ultimate deal ($2 for two months).
So far trying Gears 4. It's VERY generic and a step back from previous installments. The trilogy felt like a real AAA experience. A lot of times Gears 4 feels like it was made by a mid-tier developer....actually it was, and mid-tier is being generous. I'm playing Gears 4 to prep for Gears 5, but right now I haven't been impressed with Gears 4.
- Fighting the DeeBees is not satisfying. Their deaths aren't clear as when you kill a Locust, and bullet impact doesn't register clearly and they are all boring sponge city enemies just advancing and popping their heads out. No depth or patterns or changing of weapons really needed. Fights with robots in Mass Effect 2 & 3 felt more satisfying deeper, and that wasn't even meant to be a shooter!
- The game doesn't explain the story well. Why is JD escaping or fighting with COGS? Who is Kait? Why is the female leader of the COG so hostile? What the **** is going on? Explain this stuff early, even in meaningful drips. Goodness knows there's a lot of empty areas and slow walking involved. They could squeeze in better exposition, because when I fight, I want it to matter.
- Visuals ain't that hot. Smooth, blurry textures abound. Nothing that takes your breath away like the previous games did at the time.
- Still have a ways to go in the game. Perhaps it gets better. But that DeeBee intro kind of makes me think "Yeah, I can see why this got mediocre reviews and was behind Uncharted 4." Not even close in quality, buddy.
As for the Xbox One, lemme give a quick aside. What a horrible menu/UI! I actually miss the Xbox 360 days. I have Game Pass Ultimate and yet I still see two ads in my face telling me to get Game Pass Ultimate. And get that Mixer crap outta my face. I'm not watching Ninja and Mixer, MS.

Exactly. The only thing new in Uncharted is the setting and script. Its still just Uncharted. Yet it gets the pass from most here because Sony good, MS bad and that's has been the base this gen since 2013.
I personally don't think 85 is an average score nor do I think Uncharted or Gears are average games. They are very entertaining and I enjoy them. But there is no doubt there simply is a double standard. The things pointed out for one get passed by for the other. And its in writing. Double standards are and have been a part of life forever. Just enjoy the games.

i disagree lads. uncharted 4 may have been more of the same, but the same had been cranked up several notches from uncharted 3. with gears 4 it wasn't more of the same. in many aspects it was a real pivot away from a lot of the core attributes that made the original trilogy so memorable. it didn't feel very much like gears to me

I disagree as well. I don't think Uncharted 4 was cranked up. It isn't as good as 2 and I preferred 3 over it with 4 being better than one imo. One thing I hated about Uncharted 4's story was there was nothing lost. "A thief's End" but it ended like a Disney film. Nothing lost or forced Nate to give up the life. I thought maybe Sully or his Brother would die and it would hit him to the point that he must stop this life. Instead it was Yaaaaaayyy!! Sully and Brother are now gonna adventure and we're raising a little treasure hunter of our own!! Yaaaaaaaayyyyyy!! It was weak imo.
And I don't disagree completely on Gears 4. Gears 4 was a very safe game that was used to get a game out with a new cast and narrative. It is imo a good, not great game.
Gears 5 however is a must play game imo. This game is the Coalition showing they really added variation to Gears' formula. Is it still a TPS? Of course. But it has never been as fast, smooth, had as much to explore or weapons to use. The narrative takes a great turn for the future with a real cost that anyone that has finished it knows what I mean.
It is imo The best Gears game in the series.
