played farcy, hl2, fear, crysis, stalker? they all have great ai for their time and it has improved as much as the graphicsimprezawrx500
Yah they have, it has gotten better

Its actually quite hard to write adaptive A.I which can adjust itself to different circumstances you bring it under because you have to tell it everything it is able to do otherwise it'll sit there like a post doing nothing, you can shortcut the whole process and cheat A.I (many RTS or FPS do this) but for the most part making something that can adapt to anything you throw at it is pretty hard cause its a lot of work.
Its why most developers will limit the ways you can interact with the A.I your facing against because theres often more work involved in doing proper A.I then there is in making whole game because you can spend a long time making brilliant A.I.
AI has improved greatly. Play a game like F.E.A.R or Rainbow Six Vegas. and then go back and play a game like GoldenEye or Black. The difference will suprise you.
In GoldenEye, enemies could not shoot over open spaces and they walked in straight lines. If enemy AI did that now, the game would be a laughing stock. Enemies now seek cover, use grenades to flush you out of hiding, flank and advance, etc.
How about sports games when you could run the same play over and over and have it work every time. Can't do that very well in Madden 08.
A game like GTA IV. Enemies seek cover and advance on your position from cover, and try to flank you if you stay in one spot too long. In GTAs past, they stood out in the open and didn't move.
AI is a greatly complex field though. How do you make computers behave like a human? It is harder and slower to advance AI than it is to advance graphical capabilities, but AI is improving. Its just slower and more gradual, so its much more difficult to notice unless you go back and play older games and appreciate the differences.
Stalker, Crysis and othe games shows great AI, sadly this is almost exclusively limited to PC games.
GTA IVs is also surprisngly good.

I was suprised. I jacked a car yesterday in the game, turns out they had armed friends around who started shooting me from cover. A patrolling police officer saw and got involved in the shooting. He called for backup, and I got trapped in the middle of a massive shoot out, with both sides hiding behind cars and mailboxes. I was pretty impressed.
I never got the car I wanted either...

You could have just shot the driver and then gotten away with the car.....[QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"][QUOTE="skrat_01"]GTA IVs is also surprisngly good.

You could have just shot the driver and then gotten away with the car.....I could have, but there is very little fun in doing it that way. This felt very compelling, and was great fun to watch and participate in. Like a shootout at the OK Corral. Why skip it?
what gear sof war and cod4 have great AI their alot harder on hardkemar7856
CoD4 had AI?
Don't get me wrong, the scripting does help the NPCs a little, but actual AI isn't present apart from "throw grenades, shoot, run from grenade".

lol yea i have had a very similar experience, and it totally amazed me when it happened.Hell I was astounded when a guy punching me (after I pushed him over) was arrested by the police.
Finally Rockstar got beleiveable A.i in GTA IV right.

AI is much more difficult and requires much more talent.Dreams-Visions
These 2 responses should have ended this thread. :)Having better and better AI takes a lot of time, is hard to do, and difficult to show people until they already have the game. Making prettier and prettier graphics is very easy and makes for great advertising and PR.
And that doesn't even touch on the fact that AI walks a fine line between being realistic (and boring or too difficult) and being fun (cannon fodder). Many times developers are only concerned about AI being "good enough" to make the game fun and still present some challenge for better gamers.

(EDIT after thinking about it the topic should be why hasn't AI progressed at any where near the same rate as graphics, but that wouldn't have been very catchy would it?)
imo .. bioshock has the best AI among the next gen games...I don't know about that. Some of the plasmids (like Enrage and Target Dummy) seem to show off the stupidity of those splicers and make you wonder if all that splicing had gone to their heads. And the Big Daddies are pretty simple-minded, too. For example, no Rosie I've met seems to gotten it into their heads that if I use Telekinesis on one of the proximity mines they throw that it's a good idea to find cover before I throw it back at them.

[QUOTE="Dante2710"][QUOTE="bobbetybob"][QUOTE="Dante2710"][QUOTE="ragincoley86"]ummm.....have u played halo 3 on normal and legendary? you can tell how aggressive the enemies are at a higher difficulty :|I have owned a playstation, dreamcast, xbox, gamecube, and now I own a 360. Over the years I've seen graphics improve and.....that's about it. Sure games now are good and some of them are great but A.I. isn't. When you have difficulty levels, such as easy and hard, the difference shouldn't be on easy it takes 5 hits to die and hard it takes 3. The A.I. should get smarter on harder levels or they could have improve A.I. for boss battles. For now, I have no problem with online being the main source of competition because there's no substitute for playing against a human. With the power of the 360 and ps3 I'm sure some aspects should get better??

Never played it, but how exactly are they more aggressive? I don't see that as a good thing, I see aggressive as them seeking you out and shooting the crap out of you, is that what they do?
they will get out of the way if you try to run them over, or if u throw a grenade, they move around alot more and will run away and hide if its neeeded, and then there is the skulls which u can turn on, which will change how the react and stuff, like they will throw more grenades and stuff....forgot what effect every skull has...They arent really that aggressive in legendary. On the tsavo highway checkpoint they wont come anywhere near you unless you go towards them. Even then you can simply pedle backwards and they wont seek you out, it's quite an easy thing to exploit in that section.
Eh... They seek me out a ton in Tsavo Highway, they will chase you quite far. I've had elites run all the way over to me from across the map because they saw me shoot a grunt. Not particularly smart, but aggressive.
