I wouldn't say I am a cow , but I own ps3 & wii. In all honesty how does sony expect to compete this holiday season with a 200$ x360 and 250$ Wii. It just doesn't seem possible to compete with that with a 400$ ps3. I don't unerstand, why wouldn't sony just release a 40 gig SKU at 299$, sales would mostdefinitelyrise & it could actually compete this holiday season. But who am I to judge sony, my major is advertisment & promotion not marketing.

EDIT: Oh and I have been tempted at that 199$ X360 SKU many atimes.

Because Sony are making a huge loss on the console, price drop will do them very good, but for now, its best to slowly stimulate demand until the cost of the console goes down. Either way, now that they are doing well, they cant afford to go into even greater loss

the plan is to pass 360 within its 10 year lifespan. theyll pass 360 worldwide one day.......but some cows fear that day will happen when the next gen arrives with the 720....and at that point itll be a hollow victory.

Meanwhile some developers see no point in making games for ps3 with its lackluster sales, and with less games there is less incentive to buy the console. sighh this is like a train of stupidity

Its going to take another 2 years at this rate to catch up, and MS have the price advantage, heck they dont mind selling consoles at a loss to increase the userbase to prepare for next-gen

are you saying that every ps 2 sold after the 360 and wii came does not count to the total sales of the ps 2. just because micro and nin drop there consoles does not mean last gen is over. when sony stops making the ps 2 then last gen will be over.

I think people are vastly overating the PS2 in the last two years, its had a great 06, a quiet year but plenty of heavy hitters, but really, 07, other than a few games here and there and thats it

Don't you think by dropping the price $200.00 within it's first year on the market was desperation enough ? Sheesh

Last gen has ended buddy. PS2 is merely a last gen console that isnt discontinued. We currently live in the generation of Wii, 360 and PS3.

And my point still stands. When 720 launches, if PS3 passes 360 then it WILL be a hollow victory, as PS3 and 360 will be considered last gen consoles at that time.

History will remember 360 being #2 when the next gen begins....even though it eventaully becomes third. deal.

I'd say there's a 50/50 chance of a price drop being announced at TGS this year.

the CEO of sony actually siad "no 08 PS3 price cut"

but hey, if the market environment changes, u gotta break some promises I guess. Ps3 isnt even doing that bad to warrent a price cut. Europe and japan it is selling almost as much as 360, despite its cost gap. its doing quite well for its pricetag.

Well, they did say the same thing last year. I think they're gonna see how much the 360 outsells the PS3 by over the next month and then make a decision. Even if there's no price cut I can see the 2 consoles selling equally WW this holiday season.

They are just now breakig even, as it costs ~$400 per unit to manufacture, so they are temporarily stopping the bleeding.

Is that the same CEO who said it had sold out at launch?

Or the one that said it would sell regardless of price?

Sony CEO's have less credibility than George Dubya.

some of you need to realize what a price drop is. price drops are there because your product is not selling. ms was heading to third and need to drop the ps3 is still selling even at a higher price look at amazon for example the ps3 is in the top ten been this way for weeks yet the 360 has barely hit the top 25 even with the 200 dollar price tag. its at 62. it is cheaper why isn't selling like hotcakes. we all know price drops create a bump in sales and we all know they don't last. if you still selling even at a 500 dollar price then you stay at the price until demand is low then you price drop.

Because they are secretive about it as no one would want to purchase one now if they can get it for cheaper in Nov. just like last fall. I don't doubt that they're planning to cut the price within the next 35 days or so.

Which is precisely my point, Sony (obviously) hoped that MS wouldn't force them to cut the price this fall but a $200 360 is just too compelling for them to ignore. They're just begging to lose worldwide to MS from Sept. to Dec. if they don't cut the price of the PS3 by at least $100.

yes for the first time and because of a price drop. ms can't keep doing a price drop every month just to keep sales up like this. in reality the price drop is temporary and cause a pimple on the sales chart. well that pimple just healed and went down.

Don't think it got a price drop in Japan, Europe certainly, but unsure of Japan.

A couple of decent RPG's being exclusive to the console healped it more than anything else.

Um... you do realize both the DS and PSP are current generation handhelds and aren't on the same level as the PS2 right? The next generationg of handheld gaming hasn't arrived yet therefore both of those platforms are still considered current generation (in terms of handheld gaming, not console) until the DS2 and PSP2 drop some time in the next year or so.

As for the PS2, sure the sales still count on some level, but last generation ended with the PS2 in the lead and its still in the lead over the Gamecube and Xbox (the original), but when compared to the current generation platforms (Wii, PS3, and 360) the sales don't matter at all. Also I'd hardly call the PS2 being supported at this point, didn't it only have like 15 games out this year, most of which were sports games? Sony is counting to keep the PS2 alive just out of spite to hit the 10 year mark and then they'll drop so fast it won't even be funny.

The PS3 WILL pass 360 in World Wide sales, but it won't be until long after the 360 has vanished from store shelves and the next Microsoft console has taken its place. Its a victory to some, but the others, its meaningless because the PS3 will have beaten a console that wasn't increasing its numbers because it wasn't being supported. While the 360 is in production, the PS3 won't pass it in World Wide sales, unless this generation actually runs for another 10 years and the sales stay just as they are now. With a $199 360 on the market and the Wii still staying strong at $250 there's no hope for a $400 PS3 to hang with them.

The PS3 suffers from the same problem Saturn had: complex and/or proprietary hardware that is difficult to bring down in price, so what they do is offer bundles to mask the price.

And the Blu-Ray drive doesn't help.

Lots of things have helped bump the price up, the Blu-Ray drive certainly being the main culprit.

By removing the tray and having the console suck/pull the disk into the console adds around another $10 to the price as well, I'm willing to bet they included a few other bits and peices in there that adds a few dollars here and there to the cost as well.

If they dropped the price before the Holidays (as in early November) I think sales would sky-rocket. They should have a 80GB and 160GB model and sell the 80GB one for $299 and the 160GB one for $399. Would be perfectly priced for competition against the 360.

They certainly need something quick, if they get tanked in the holidays it'll undo a lot of the good work they've managed to do so far this year.

if they would only drop the price to 379$ i think that would drive sales alot, because it gets rid of you looking at it and saying, oh its 400$!
