1) Why would anybody want to do puzzles in a survival horror game? Kill a bunch of zombies then do a jigsaw puzzle to open the next door? LAME...

2) I hate the aspect of low ammunition for survival horror games. This is why I did not enjoy the first Resident Evil game on PS1. If you DO give me low ammunition, then at least give me some good melee attacks to compensate. In RE1, Jill Valentile looks like she's about to fall over every time she swings the knife, and her attacks are so slow its impossible to get by the game using knife attacks.

3) Action is what makes the game fun anyways. At least in my opinion.PandaBear86

because you're trying to survive using what little resources you got, that's why it's called survival horror, not TPS

I can tolerate few resources, but cannot stand terrible melee attacks and dislike the fact that most developers are unable to create a survival horror game that high an extremely high difficulty as a result of this low ammunition. RE1 was HARD for me, maybe I just suck at that genre but I believe most people had problems trying to finish it due to lack of resources, terrible melee attacks, and high difficulty. I have no idea how people consider this to be fun.

personally i really like it when your resources are low it means you really have to think trough, i just wish they adapted the survival horror genre to more games, like fear effect for example it's pretty much a surival horror game, except that it focus' more on the adventure part when compared to games like resident evil

i think it's just more accessible to a larger market when you compare RE4 controls and RE1,2,3 controls...

Larger fanbase = Bigger sales

trust me, it does, it has puzzles every 10 minutes, you have adventure game like sections (meaning you have to talk to people, use item A or person B so you can get item C wich goes on item D to open door F, etc.)

RE5 is not a survival horror game. It's a third person shooter, plain and simple. Dead Space IMO is much more qualified to carry the Survival Horror moniker.

If that's true, then beat 'em up, shoot 'em up, 2d platform and PC adventure game genres which were all popular in the early and mid 90's would have come back a long time ago. The genre is dying, better start to get used to it, I did.

I can see that happening. Is like a circle. Games come out, are new, feel fresh. Got exploded to death. Are renew and transformed for a while. And the, when people miss the origins so badly, they return to their roots. Give it one or two gens.

I agree. Blame RE4 I guess, that was the game that started the shift in tone.

Silent-Hal

uh, silent hills been shifting more and more towards combat since the first game.

silent hill 2 had more combat than 1, 3 had alot more focus on combat then 2, and 4 was wrose than 3.

Yep, this.

Or maybe he meant games like 7th Guest which has no action at all but just plain puzzles and atmosphere?

Music, films and cartoons have went the same direction. Faster, more agressive, bang bang boom. Probably has to do with society or education or so.

Because its so focused on action, the emphesis on survival is much weaker, and the horror is not as threatening.

Yeah, Dark Corners of the Earth. Easily one of the best recent horror games to come out. It didn't sacrifice horror for action like RE did.

That is true, it was an awesome game. Pity it was changed so much... or I dare say 'dumbed down' when development was shifted to the Xbox.... Its still a blessing the game was finally ported to PC.

because gamers keep buying crap games that focus primarily on pretty graphics & action. i call it the american cinema, or hollywood syndrome.. because the same **** happened with movies as more and more people paid attention to crap movies with crap stories and big explosions / special effects.

it's called pop culture erosion. a dumbing down of media to meet the lowest common denominator. many people have written about it - it's interesting, and depressing stuff.

I think it's developer's ambitions to make games feel more like a playable cinematic experience vs. an actual game. While being much more immersive, you sacrifice alot of what makes this genre what it is.

i think we're arguing the same side of the coin, but in a chicken / egg manner. did this happen because of the hollywood syndrome i mentioned, or has it happened because of a parallel syndrome in gaming media created by people supporting games that are action heavy and low on story / plot / innovation?

i don't personally think that immersive cinema experience & engaging / innovative gameplay / story are mutally exclusive. i think things are the way they are because developers follow the money, and the money seems to be in shooters that focus more on Rambo action as opposed to something a bit more sophisticated.

Well I don't think it's fair to say that games are getting "dumbed down", as graphics and controls, voice acting, etc. improve. I think it's a result of the increasing "special effects" in popularized movie franchises that leads developers, as you said, to closely parallel that market. Zombie flicks have evolved from House of the Dead droning slow moving zombies to films such as I am Legend and 28 Days / Weeks later with more capable zombie types. I don't think I'm being imaginative at all to say that the genre is following what hollywood lays out for them.

The reason why it's discussed, is because Capcom changed a series that was -originally- survival horror, to a TPS. It's like they sold out on the fans the series had. There wouldn't be this much of a problem, if Capcom had just made a new IP instead of using the RE brand to ensure success. I liked RE4, and will probably like RE5. But hell, do I wish it was called something else, and the RE I knew could just be left as a golden oldie, or even left to carry on in it's own direction.

True. If they did make a new game franchise instead of calling it RE4, everyone would have been happy. Yeah, pick up money from dead enemies to buy better weapons from the merchant, that's nonsense in a game of RE

[QUOTE="lolwotrickroll"]resident evil 5 is ACTION HORROR. it is not a pure action game, and the people who say it is are just as bad as the people who call it a survival horror game. CAPCOM changed the series to make it better and new, and there will STILL be normal survival horror games like siren: BC and fatal frame 4. this kind of discussion has to just die completely. it's been around for years like the effin pirates vs. ninjas. IT'S JUST GENRES PEOPLE!jonnyt61

Not all fans of the original series dislike Capcom's new take on the genre. You're speaking for a very small portion of gamers there. Not enough of an audience to base an important development decision on. This is one of Capcom's most popular franchise' s (If not the most, i don't know specific numbers). There are 3 movies based on the game along with all the paraphernalia to go along with. Capcom would have been foolish to invest as much into a new IP as opposed to promoting an established franchise.

This isn't really a system wars topic. System wars is for direct comparisons between gaming platforms. General discussion about gaming should go into the General Gaming Discussion forum.
