The thing is many people can't afford to keep up with the ever-changing complexity of PC gaming ... daqua_99

MISCONCEPTION!*

PC gaming is not particularly complex, theres a primary software API (DirectX) and hardware levels which are easy enough to keep track of. Thats all you need, the correct DirectX version and powerful enough hardware. Most games are scalable so even some older graphics cards will run them, you don't need special adaptors, any sort of additional software packages (ones that aren't included that is) or specialized hardware although a physics card or audio card certainly help in some respects.

I know.:P My point was that no one on these forums has been as unchanging as you have, sort of odd to hear you say someone else has a closed mind.

[QUOTE="MADVLAD123"]Oh man not THAT old. I'm not good with computers (tech mumbo jumbo and such) but I'm pretty sure that it's not in HD. It's like a really old Gateway CRT monitor. Kinda like this one here. Vandalvideo
Let me tell you this now. As an AV person, the one thing I do know are monitors more than anything. IBm released its XGA standard for displays in 1990. The native resolution of this standard is 1024X768. The previous standard, SVGA, which was atleast 800X600 was released in 1987. The last monitor that was the last resolution you mentioned set as its standards was an AMIGA. All monitors post 1990 fully support HD. The monitor you linked has a max resolution of freaking 1280X1024 FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

like I said, I don't know any of that technical jargon. But I might have to check up to see what resolution I'm running (pretty sure its 640X480...going to check what my max resolution is as well). It sure doesn't look like HD to me because I have a plasma television in the living room and it looks loads better than what my computer monitor displays.

PC's are the only platform where you actually feel like you own the hardware. With consoles it's almost as if you are renting them from the companies. The companies control the fate of how useful your hardware is. Propreitary hardware and formats gives you no choice in the hardware you buy and the online system is completely up to the company. $50 a month for a P2P online system?! Friend codes? With the PC game developers can choose freely how they want to set up the online service for that game. Don't like the feel of keyboard and mouse for this game? Just buy a gamepad. This game is lagging? Just chuck in some more RAM. Customizability is something you take for granted until you try a console.Metroid_Time

I agree. If you are okay with having to check if your PC can run a game, and okay with maybe not being able to buy all 3 consoles because of cost, you should have the best experience in my opinion. For example, you don't need three PCs for 3 controllers(Like consoles), you just switch gamepads, let's say there was the 360 PC controller, Wiimote, PS3, and the KB and M, you could just switch witch you're using, you could have all the tech benefits of both the 360 and the PS3, or if you like less power hogging games like the Wii, get a 2.5" HDD that only runs at 5200RPM- rather than 7200RPM like my extremely loud computer. That's why I really want to invest in one 2008 or maybe this year. Plus, for some reason, that feeling of playing on a PC is just somehow better, like when I play Max Payne 2 or GTA:SA, I feel in control, and as if it's a more private experience, even though the consoles I own are in my own room, with PCs you get to do what you want with the games, download saves, and of course not let people mess with them, the consoles just don't have that feel. They feel like something I just have to buy in order to play my favorite games. If I could, I'd rather just get Mario, Zelda, MGS, Resident Evil 5, all that stuff on my PC. Take the 600 from the PS3, 400 from the 360, and 250 from the Wii, add it to my 1000 dollar PC, I'd have one awesome 2400 dollar PC. Because I wouldn't need 3 seperte machines to play different games. But it seems this gen more and more games are coming to the PC(A lot just ports, but some really good exclusives too), so that could happen, even DMC4 is.

Sorry, I can't explain it any better than that. I just don't see my PC as a gaming machine. maybe it's the uncomfortable chair, or maybe it's the small non-HD screen, but I just don't like gaming on the PC.

shadow_hosi

Oh my god. I've said it plenty of time but non-HD monitor? Go back in time and tell that to me ten years ago when I was playing Quake 2 in "HD"

aaah so foolish medvlad123, PCs have been in HD long before tvs (HL1 was in HD for example) wana know what 1280x1024 is? its an hd setting(i think 1080?? not sure)

haha. My post DOES sound as if I was speaking out of assumptions and old misconceptions, but in fact, I am talking out of my own personal experience. I really do have uncomfortable chairs and small non-HD screens. (still waiting on that non HD verdict..after a while of arguing with that other dude I'm going to have to see if my monitor can actually run in HD).

PS: it's "Madvlad123" :P

Mmmm......depends what you mean. Normally I'd bumrush you with misconception and explain how a high end rig =/= a console, and an equivalent PC is only slightly more expensive than the console in question (100-200 more).

Then there's always those things on the internet like windows game advisor and better ones that give you a little extra insight as well, and those require no knowledge, except for browsing the interwebs, to scan your PC and figure out what games your PC can handle and at what level of performance, of course, it's not always 100% accurate, but does give insight that I didn't know about my PC, like the fact that I didn't know that my PC didn't have SM2.0, but now I do thanks tot he scan, and now I know I can't play certain games.

Let me clear some things out for the angry hermits here: I'm not speaking out against PC gaming. I'm not trying to bash it, I'm not trying to prevent anyone from gaming on their PC. All I was saying is that I, myself, do not like PC gaming. Just my own 2 cents.

100-200 is only slightly more? As per my calculations that is 25-50% of the 360 price. That's more than "a little" more expensive for an "equivelant experience". Although I will say, it is nice to see you finally admit that pc IS going to be more expensive, no matter the amount.

That's not what I meant, what I mean is, hypothetically, if you don't buy all 3 consoles, the PC would be much cheaper. In other words, if you already spent 600+400+250, it could be expensive, however, if let's say, you buy just the 360, that's 850 dollars you could add to your PC. Since, PCs are more expensive, but buying 3 consoles is like buying a PC, however, leaving one or two out, would be enough for a nice PC. Basically, buying 3 consoles and a nice PC is like buying a PC and a half.

And games on the PC are about 6% less. Over time, that can equate to a cheaper platform. Perspective, with just ten games you've already negated that price.

Personally, I enjoy ports more on the PC, the PC is overall just a better platform, unless devs enjoy royalties and getting games banned because of an ESRB rating.....AKA Manhunt 2. I mean, people talk about digi distribution on the consoles, when PCs are so close, that almost all our games are stored on the HDD, except some CAN stream, but not a lot, because we really don't need too with the massive HDDs of today, so the only problem is internet speed, where as the consoles have storage AND internet speed problems, PCs are so far ahead in everything.

This feels like reaching to me, but I can let it go. MMM...actually I can't. This is going to fall under your own argument of "uprgrading a pc is done under your own volition". Likewise, buying games will be done under your own volition. You could in theory, buy 0 games, thus making the console cheaper. You could also find alternative sources for the games at a lesser price, but that argument is not as solid.

Beyond that, the pc is actually more expensive than the console, and that was the point I was most interested in.

Yeah steam is becoming really huge and it's just so easy to buy games which are hard to find in stores over the net and cheap too.

I love PC gaming... but I just can't afford it. I've just recently upgraded to 2gigs of ram, I have a P4 2.93 Ghz, and I'm going to get a x1950 Pro soon. Thats about as much as I could spend :(

I'm merely stating possibilities. The PC is not the ends all most expensive machine everyone would have you believe. If you buy a machine equal in power to a console, and buy as many games on the console as you do on the PC (10 games isn't alot), then the PC will invariably cost just as much. I don't think this is such a far flung scenario.

Yeah, it's really dissapointing how consoles make a huge deal about Digi Distribution, when it's really that simple stuff yahoo games have been doing for a long time. And PCs are already distributing major high end games. Like HL2 Eps, far further than what 360 and PS3 have done, I mean, Flow and Alien Hominid are cool and all, but I'd like to see them digitally distribute something like GTAIV, but because of the HDD, that wouldn't be very smart, I have a 200GB HDD that I got in early 05'.

HAHAHAHA someone doesn't read his own links! Now this is comedy. The civilizations game is going to just be like COD3 was for the consoles. The main game is still going to be, like I said, PC exclusive. A spore game for the DS! Its going to be an entirely seperate game. And for the Hellgate article they said they're creating a NEW IP, not porting Hellgate. Self ownage at its best.

Ok dude, but spore, Hellgate, Cvilization andDead or alive arecomingto other consoles. crysis will prob come just like Far cry back in the day, huh? lol

Actually, every game I stated are all exclusive to the PC at this momment in time. No speculation please without solid evidence.

Wow dude, get with the times...

I think he meant PC games, not console spin-offs that just use the name, but are completely diffrent games. (like console Civilization and SPORE will be). Hellgate is still only rumored and Crysis? If it comes like Far Cry then it again won't even be the same game.

[QUOTE="whoisryanmack"]This feels like reaching to me, but I can let it go. Vandalvideo

Probably so. The option to upgrade the PC into oblivion jades that perspective, most people would see it as the only way. Now I'm just asking you, I don't pc game or have many friends who do, how much would you say a "typical" gaming pc costs for the average pc gamer? Again, not making any points, just wondering.

And even then, I don't see why people always make the assumption the console version is better, even if it wasn't mostly exclusive, the PC versions generally end up just as good or if not, better. Plus, the exclusives, making it even better. Plus, your PC being it's own hub is awesome, everything you want on it. To me, I find the PC simpler. Even if you do have to figure out whether or not your PC can run a game.

Dint you see sid sayin' that thing?? "Civilization Revolution is the game I've always wanted to make!"... sounds like this is the main game... and read th NExtGen article again man... "This year NamcoBandai has Hellgate: London, a PC RPG cum, shooter that it is co-publishing that with EA. Given the company's newfound penchant for cross-platform development, I ask if an Xbox 360 version is likely. Karlsson won't confirm it, but he admits that it's highly unlikely that such a notion is far from the company's planning calendar."

Just because casual console games like you haven't heard about those games doesn't change how high quality they will be. And sure, the list is a bit empty, but it will get bigger after E3 and GC and most of all even now it walks over 2008 line-up of any console

He said the same thing about Simgolf and Railroads. But I think that Vandalvideo meant the "main" Civ will stay PC-only..ie Civ6 will be just for PC, while consoles get CivRev. And with Hellgate all you have are "maybies". So you're really just self owning yourself here :)

No, a "new IP" was hinted at by the dude. That does not mean its the agme itself. Not to mention its going to be an etnirely different game with the name Spore. Spore itself is still a PC exclusive. Same for the next main installment of Civ.
