Why I guarantee LBP will be 2008 GOTY

My top 5 reasons why LBP will be the sweeping 2008 GOTY. While I don't necessarily agree with the imminent decision because of the flawed logic that the industry will use, I do understand why it will happen. Much the same reason why I understand Barack Obama will be the next US President, due to similar flawed logic.

Reason 1: Its not a shooter

Despite the fact that shooters are some of the most fun, long lived games ever made, the fact that there are a kazillion of them out there makes it difficult for anything in the shooter genre to stand out. LBP stands out just from the very fact that its not a shooter, and it can barely even be considered a 3D game.

Reason 2: Its non-violent

Game reviewers love it when they can elevate a game that doesn't make them look like a bunch of psychotic blood-thirsty columbine deviants. It reflects good on the industry when it awards games which even Jack Thompson, God rest his soul, would approve of.

Reason 3: Buzzword of the year (User-generated-Content)

This game is basically a platformer construction kit. The mere idea that you can build levels of your wildest dreams is enough to get giddy over, EVEN IF every creation you make doesn't quite work out and your eventual frustration takes over. Doesn't matter, because in your mind SOMEONE with skill will eventually make something you may want to play. Essentially unlimited content, and who cares about the quality of content when its unlimited.. That by nature implies that there WILL be quality content.

Reason 4: Sackboy

Not since Nintendogs had such a videogame character tugged on your heartstrings. A Hollywood calibre drama movie script turned interactive videogame can't hold a candle to a virtual burlap sock puppet that you can customize (customize was last-year's buzzword)

Reason 5: Competition

As far as GOTY competition, if you eliminate all the shooters, you're left with Fable II, an RPG. RPG's are arguably next in line after shooters for being the most prolific game genre out there. The only thing that would give Fable II a fighting chance is if they replaced your companion dog with a sackboy. Something tells me this isnt going to happen.

when hermits say mods are the main reason to own a PC , consolites rebuttal by sayin there are excellent mods BUT gazillion crap mods. same thing is gonna happen to LBP - some excellent user generated content but a load of crap content also.

So by saying "it's not a shooter", you conveniently exclude MGS4 and GTA4? Those games got 10's, they are prime ontenders on GS. And you've got SSBB and (sadly, they unfortunately seem to like this sort of thing) Fallout 3 on top of Fable 2. And don't say "Fallout 3 is a shooter", it most certainly is just an FPS, but don't expect GS to think that, I'm sure they'll tout it an an RPG. So that's five other contenders. Mark my words. LBP will be GOTY. GTAIV? There are so many GTA's they practically have their own genre. GTAIV was nothing spectacular. Saints Row did everything GTAIV did before it. The only thing SR didn't have was the pedigree.

MGS4? People don't even play that anymore. Its a 5 hour fix for MGS fans. It may have gotten a 10 at the time, its like a sugar rush after eating a bunch of candy bars.. a week, a month, etc after beating it you don't want to touch it again.

SSBB? Lol wut.

Fallout 3? Its Oblivion re-skinned.

And I already discussed Fable 2.

LBP isn't a mod and won't create mods. It'll create levels and mini games for people. Mods are like changing an modern FPS to scifi, or zombies, or realism. These change the game completely.

SSBB got 9.5, it's a contender.

Oblivion got 9.6 (undeserved but GS seem to love it nonetheless)

GS don't base their GOTY selection on what genre the games are, they base it on the games themselves, like any normal human would. After all, using your sort of logic, they gave a platformer GOTY last year, they won't do it again this year.

Sorry for not really paying attn to what your topic is about and all but it just seems tyo me that our concerns are setting the bar low compared to the real fallout of yet another game that's trying to be somewhat innovative failing at retail.

The bigger the hype the larger the fall. After watchng so many vids of this game I would have to say in terms of platforming it's just too slow and floaty in most cases to accomplish in tense platforming scenarios. It'll be much better at quirky mini-games imho like the tetris concept.-RPGamer-

Although ideally, I would love to see it become game of the year, I have doubts it would happen.

You do have some good arguements, and yeah, they do make sense, and you back them up with logic which most people seem to not have these days.

However, I somewhat doubt it would get game of the year. Well, here at least. I have a feeling that it will recieve game of the year from at least one highly known game site.

But even then, I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and my lucky charms around, because I really love this game. :D.

First off, I'm not a lemming. I have a gaming PC, a Wii & a 360 (& used to own a PS3). We all know darn well LBP will win GOTY whether it deserves it or not based on the general public. It isn't a popularity contest. Its what the 'professional videogame journalists' think, and I clearly outlined their 5 point logic behind it.

Look at the movies & oscars, etc.. Best picture rarely goes to the best movie of the year. Because all the movies are looked at from a jaded critic's eye, not from a moviegoers eye.

I am not saying LBP SHOULD be GOTY, I'm saying it WILL be GOTY. There's a difference. We all know its going to score preposterously high because it is a new and innovative game. Yes, its a very niche game with some serious image issues (its extremely kiddy looking), but its the innovation and fresh ideas that so-called game journalists give out the high marks for.

I think Little Big Planet has a better change at GoTY than Metal Gear Solid 4 does.

I still think GTA4 and Gears 2 will have the best shot.

LBP is in my finals, though.
