Wii U could have all its games for the whole gen at 1080P60. PS4 could have better looking games at 900P30.

Quake 1 at 4K is probably a less intensive rendering workload than Quake 4 at 1080P.

But all in all yes I've seen the same specs we all have, and it suggests a certain hierarchy. What is the real world magnitude of this hierarchy? Don't know, but I'm enjoying the stories as they come out.

1. Because you see less jaggies

2. Because every gen so far provided an increase of resolution. The natural evolution over last gen's 720p, is 1080p

3. Because once you get used to a better res, it's hard to go back

4. Because people invest on new platforms expecting better performance

5. Because i got a 1080p TV last year

i could go on...

But the best games are Demons Souls and Zelda, so once you have played this PS3 and Nintendo exclusives it is really really hard to go back to PC games

Because it's 2014 and should be the norm by now. I know lems have low standards but the fact a 2013 console is $500 to play games is 720p is laughable. Even 1080p is getting a little old as I play some of my PC games at 1440p. Stay butthurt lems.

"B...bu....bu...but my eyez can't tell the difference between 1080p and 720p!!11"

agreed in 2013 despite the fact that PCs have been running 1080p standard for years, the day the ps4 launched is the day 1080p became a necessity(well outside of battlefield, oddly enough thats the one game that plays better at 900p). Strange coincidence that happened on the same day...

or you could work and buy various systems to get the best of both worlds instead of flamming and making bs about something just because you can't have it

Graphical fidelity is irrelevant, if the best games have mediocre engines is still fine with me as long as they are the best games and have great art

Can't the PC play most Zelda games except the latest one?

PC still has DkS and can be close enough to DeS' experience.

Then you are in the wrong thread, buddy. This is not about your personal favourite games, it's about the relevance of 1080p.

...or you're just too stupid to differentiate both.

So,you're telling me that running a SNES game at 1080p is the same running Killzone:SF at 1080p cause both are 1080p?

lems sure are slow . im talking about resolutions and xbone is nothing but a blurfest with 720p.

That means PS3 was a blurfest?

Have you heard of games with great engines AND great gameplay? Oh nooo that's cuz these don't exist right?------------ If a person waits 7-8y for a new system, spends $400-500 on a brand new system and expects no more than his almost decade old consoles,,,,,,,,,,, i dunno what to say.

It's not a big deal in the real world. Hell, game journalists from Gamespot, IGN, and Giantbomb were all mocking the "outcry" during resolutiongate. The reason resolution is such a big deal now is the same as why sales matter so much now. Cows are running rampant in System Wars. The rules change every time they get an advantage.

@no-scope-AK47: So tell me. How does 720p make a game horrible to play ?

just saying......

I mean I’m playing Silent Hill 3 to pieces atm on my old ps2.

It’s probably the best horror game I’ve played along with SH2 but the graphics is nothing compared to game now.

Are you playing games for resolution or for a quality experience.

Because Xbone and 720p is crap. Your average phone runs at 720p lol with highend at 1080p. And 720p tvs are being phased out of production because its such crap and not worth the time.

Because displaying an image at 1080p and running a game at 1080p is the exact same thing

nice try at damage control as if HD games dont exist lol.

comparing mobile phone games to actual games

lol

The only LOL is that xbone has games at LASTGEN and mobile resolutions, lems are just too slow to comprehend it.

LOL!!!

Bro do you even know what you are talking about ?

You don’t know sh!t.

Did you know both consoles can display 4K through BlueRay movies ?

This shows you how ignorant you are.

Displaying a game is completely different. Why are you all going on about this 1080p thing when I’ve got a 1440p 144hz PC monitor that will blow your screens shitless.

1440p vs 1080p

In terms of resolution 1440p wins. But will 1080p bring down the experience of an amazing game like Bioshock Infinite for example.

NO!!.

The best game I have ever played isn’t even 1080p.

If you wan’t ultimate visuals buy yourself a PC worth of at least one and a half times my PC.

3000$ in total I think.

You are a pony and I can see it from a mile.

With your logic, if PC elitists would come in here they would laugh at your 1080p posts because they’ve got expensive PC’s and Higher resolution screens.

So how can 1080p be okay ?

Stop whining and just play the game.

I’d like to see GTA V for PS3,X360 run on any flagship phone. 100% of exploding and 100% chance of you looking like an idiot.

@CroidX: Well, considering the vast majority of the population cannot tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, either due to the quality of their eyesight or the setup of their home entertainment system, 1080p is really not a big deal. You could substitute a 720p set with most people's 1080p sets and they would never know the difference. People with perfect 20/20 vision need to sit closer than 10 feet with a 50" set to be able to tell a difference. Of course, most people do not have perfect vision and a significant number of people sit farther than 10 feet away. Not to mention a very small percentage of people actually own HDTV's that are larger than 50".

I used to be obsessed with image quality, especially in regards to movies. I was an early adopter of Blu Ray and used to get in daily discussions/debates on misc hi-def forums regarding the quality of the transfers, which codecs were better, etc.. Then about 16 months after the launch of Blu Ray, I began to notice that I was so obsessed over the image quality of the film, that it was actually becoming a distraction. I wasn't enjoying the movies as much as I used to as I was so focused on image quality. At that point, I recognized how ridiculous it all was and from that point forward I stopped paying so much attention to image quality. I actually started buying DVD's again and now buy just as many DVD as I do Blu Ray's. It just doesn't matter to me anymore. I am the same way with gaming now too. I enjoy nice looking games like the next guy, but its no longer a significant factor that effects how much I enjoy a game. If its a fun game, I will enjoy it regardless if its 720p or 1080p.

I played games for 20 years before HD even existed and I enjoyed playing those games as much as I enjoy playing the ones today. Graphics are the least important aspect to a quality game. Story and gameplay are a million time more important than graphics.

Its not a big deal for some people depending on the size of your tv and the distance you play it at. For me 1080p is perfect sitting about 5 feet away.

@starwolf474: I'm an architectural photographer and have photographed a crap load of homes over the course of my career, both inside and out. If I had to estimate, I would say I have photographed over 700 homes during my 16 year career. From my experience, the VAST majority of people sit farther than 10 feet away from their HDTV's. It might be different for people living in apartments, since they don't have as much space, but people actually living in decent sized homes, I would estimate that most sit at least 13-15 feet away for their HDTV's and very few had HDTV's larger than 50".

Then you have the whole quality of eyesight issue and a significant percentage of the population have less than perfect eyesight. 20/30 eyesight is a 33% drop in visual acuity, so those people would have to sit 33% closer or roughly 7 feet or closer (with a 50" HDTV). Those with 20/40 would have to sit 5 feet or closer and so on and so on.

The bottom line is very few people overall can tell the difference between 1080p and 720p on their own HDTV's. 1080p is more or a marketing scheme than anything else and there is no denying the HDTV companies have been very successful at getting people to jump on board. If you have every gone and shopped for an HDTV, you will notice the salesman usually bring you within 6 feet of the HDTV when showing you the picture. This is done on purpose as they know that the closer they bring you, the more likely the person will be able to see differences in picture quality.

Try switching your display from 1080p to 720p or just cycle through the resolutions and notice the differences. Try changing the resolution in a game from your native 1080p to 720p and notice how fuzzy/blurry it looks in comparison. There is a HUGE difference. It's not a marketing scheme and plenty of people can tell the difference. Why would a salesman bring you closer to a product you are interested in, you ask? Why wouldn't they? Yeah, let's just go over 20ft away over here in the next aisle over to talk about the TV you want. That doesn't make any sense.

PC gamers can really tell the difference because most are only a few feet from their monitors, but some use TVs as well. While you may not notice that much of a difference in sharpness per se, it still makes a huge difference in aliasing which is a huge problem on consoles as they usually cannot handle much AA.

It happens I just bought a Full HD 1080p TV after playing half a gen with a 720p TV. I do fvckin expect my next gen games to take advantage of my glorious new TV. And yes, its very noticeable 720p vs 1080p when fairly close to the TV...
