i owned a psp and loveD it. ive never owned a DS but like 90% of the people i know who play games own a DS rather than psp! i don't know why, psp has way more features and just as many great games. The graphics are way better than the DS, i mean they looks almost as good as ps2 titles. and now, the 3DS is coming out with the same, if not slightly better graphics than the psp. PSP SHOULD BE ABLE TO OUTSELL THE DS AND PUT UP A GOOD COMPETITION WITH THE UPCOMING 3DS... but it most likely won't.

i think its the games and your age... because nintendo has more games suitable for a younger audience and the majority of gamers who play on a handheld system are kids right? older people rather have cell phones, i pods and iphones for a multipurpose entertainment device i think. Thus most kids and older people wouldn't use a psp.

PSP isn't really a failure as its managed to make a profit for Sony and allowed them to have a name in the handheld business. The only real problem with it is piracy. 3rd parties don't want to develop for the thing because they know that it will be mostly pirated and not sell well.

I will admit it's going to have a rough time when the 3DS comes though.

It has no game. :P Seriously, I think the only games I owned for mine was Locoroco, Patapon, MGS Spec Ops and Killzone Liberation.

been pointed out that the PSPs outright horrible batterylife is one of the main reasons why It diddnt do too well, for a handhelt portable device batterlife is crucial, to me it is far far far more important then how the games look.

and in games they often got the same genres, the psp did a bit too much in console games on a portable (being corrected by the newer PSP games I can see, so that is not a huge problem with newer games).

I guess it simply diddnt give a good first impression.

Because the PSP is basically a portable (and less powerful) PS2. The DS is something completely different and has a library of many unique games that are perfect for portables. Also, the DS appeals to a larger audience.

They treated it too much like a console and didn't give a **bleep** about piracy.

Now developers don't give a **bleep** about the PSP.

okay good answers thanks... i bet they're working hard on the psp2, if they announce a psp2 before the 3ds gets released ill have to make a decision to wait or not... as of now ive decided to buy a 3DS because of the awesome game lineup and future games for it.

70 million sales is not failing, it came out in 2004.

GramDubs

It's still failing in the sense that sales are declining (especially on the software side).

http://blog.flurry.com/bid/31566/Apple-iPhone-and-iPod-touch-Capture-U-S-Video-Game-Market-Share

The picture is a little misleaing because obviously it's in percentages rather than absolutes, and the total revenue in 2009 was higher than 2008.

But PSP software sales still fell from 450 million in 2008 to 281 million in 2009. That's a pretty sad state of affairs.

The battery life is enough to last you at least 5 hours. How many hours do you play the handheld before you can access a laptop or outlet to recharge?

Some people like console style games.

The PSP has been going through rough times though; could it just be that not as many big sellers were released in 2009? I'm not saying it doesn't indicate anything, but I think it's important to remember that PSP doesn't get that much western development and there are naturally going to be off and on years because of that.

It's not failing, it's sold around 60 million units. Sure, it's failing compared to the DS but the DS is a beast and destroys every console when it comes to sales.

OP, your logic concerning the target audience of the DS and PSP is that of a 10 year old

If you look at any sales chart, you would realize that the psp is not failing. I knew this thread was going to be terrible before I even read your post

Secondly, the DS is not 'just for kids.' But then again, you probably think Pokemon is for kids too.

I can answer WHY the psp is not outselling the DS, much in the same way the gamecube did not outsell the ps2: It has good games, it has more good games than the psp, and it does not try to do anything other than play games (DSi is more of a retaliation against apple than sony)

Sony never focused on the psp the same way nintendo did on the DS. They chose to go with the ps3, which has really redeemed itself in my eyes. The psp still has Monster Hunter, Metal Gear, and God of War to hang back on for a while. But for every good game the psp has, the DS has three. That's just the way its been for the past couple of years.

So true.

1st or 2nd place really has no bearing in real life. A first attempt in the handheld market that sold 60 million+ units does.

lol, the PSP is the best selling electronic gaming device in Japan.

infact, it still outsells both the Wii, PS3, DS, and any of the DS' current iterations. i'm not including the Xbox 360 because it sells maybe, what? 1,000 units a month in Japan?

There's a big difference between doing bad and not doing as good. The PSP Go is failing. The PSP in general is not.

The PSP is in a weird situation. The games on it are just like games on a console, but gimped. It's games aren't suited for a handheld like the DS's are, it's games are better suited for last gen consoles. That said, it's certainly not failing.

the PSP is still outselling both the Wii, PS3, DS AND Xbox 360.

trying to fault that by bringing in the Go is damage control.

Well the go failed cause its 250 bucks. Why would you pay that much for something that doesint add anything to the psp. Im pretty sure if it was the same price as a regular psp it would have done better. I sure as hell would have bought one cause I like DD on the handheld. Sony needs to learn how to price right. Also it doesn't matter if the game seems like a console game that was the point of the psp. To have a console like experience on the go. Most of the time it works like GOW,Daxter,MGS and such. Also this isint a hate remark against the DS owners, but the majority of them complain and say thats why psp sucks and yet are excited for MGS3 on 3DS and KH on 3DS which both are console experiances on the go. Talk about your flip flop

most people playing the ds are little kids to teenagers. most people with a psp are just teenagers. factors such as price are a factor hear. that and target audience for games. little billy would rather play or mario zelda than peacewalker or gta. and back when I was still in highschool, everybody that I saw using a psp, was using it for music and the wifi web browser.

To compare it to itself, the PSP is not a failure. However people, in the world of economics, competition, and business is that 58.4 million sold vs 130.2 million DSs sold is a failure especially if your rival system is selling at a now 1:4-5 ratio.

Also to those saying "kids play DS" I call **** and shenanigans. EVERYONE plays the DS, including the supposed anti-DS fanboys (even if they won't admit it). That statement is as false as saying, "The PSP has no good games."

PSP hate that seen in 3DS make people think it's fail? :lol:People it's only a end of handheld generation, yea it might destroy PSP.... same as 360 destroyed PS2? Also if Sony will do in good right movments it might compite with 3DS, DS was very down in terms of hardware, we will see what will happen, Sony might planning new PSP right now, who knows

But it isn't failing... I think the PSP is much better than people give it credit. It has tons of old-school games that are perfect for portable gaming and can be found for very low prices. It doesn't have as many fun, new titles as the DS, but it's still worth owning IMO.

It definitely has more than enough games. Whether or not people think they are as good as the DS is a different story.

If the thing was failing, SONY would cut its losses and stop supporting the darn thing just like they did with the eye toy. They're doing fine.

60 mill =/= Failing

Modern_Unit
It is when it's been in the market for 6 years, and current sales are sometimes eclipsed even by the PS2. Even the software on it barely sales. Overall it's a semi-successful business venture, but currently, it's failing.
