The game garnered critical acclaim from pretty much everywhere, tt won almost all the GOTY awards, and is considered by some to be the best game ever made. Why is that? The game is fun, but what sets it apart?

It revolutionised 3rd person shooters just like SM64 revolutionised 3D Gameplay. If a game truly does something amazing and revolutionary then it will always gain alot of acclaim.

Nothing. In fact it is the most overrated survival-horror game I've ever played.

It had pretty graphics, and was easily accessible with it's lack of difficulty and appealling action. The gameplay was poor and the script/story were plain out bad.

If you cant pick it out for yourself then someones opinion isnt going to make it better.

Though it was a beautiful game and had excellent controls, an ok sotry line with cheesy dialogue. gotta love capcom

Alot of people are critical of it due to the fact that it's not a survival/horror game in any sense, while the previous RE games were just that. I mean, you can take out 5+ foes with a SINGLE shotgun blast in RE4...and still have 100+ rounds left. And you become even MORE deadly when you get the semi-auto Striker. After you get that...the rest of the game is cake. Really, the horror and the survival aspects were pretty much obliterated. With that said, I still find it to be an extremely fun game.

Play through RE4 with your friends and then you'll understand. It's lengthy, the enemies are unique, the weapons are awesome, the graphics are great, the music is memorable, the enviroments are amazing to look at, and the bosses are amazing.

I agree about the controls....I'm not partial to the Gamecube controller but I played it for roughly five minutes (forgive me that) because the controls felt incredibly wonky and uncomfortable.

IMO IMO IMO qualifiers all over the place. Don't kill me.

I don't know why I like it so much. I mean, the combat is so extremely repetitive. Shoot guy in the head, then proceed to kick him in the head. Repeat this until you beat the game.

It's still one of my favorite games of all time, and I have the Wii and GameCube version. I don't know why it's so fun, but it is.

the graphics were out of this world

It wasn't at all, and now with RE5 they seem to be drawing too much from RE4. The enemies look about as scary as the Grunts in Halo or the Subspace army in SSBB. If they can keep it more horror oriented, with real scares (not Doom 3 stile) and a lack of ammunition/merchants (I prefer finding my weapons in the environment), maybe the game will be able to pull through. No annoying companions and/or half-hearted puzzles this time either hopefully. They should've named RE4: Resident Evil: Plaga Files or something. It's more a spinoff than a true Resident Evil.

i played it on the ps2

personally it was the only RE game i could play for more than a quarter of the game, i actually completed it for a change instead of just spectating my friends beating it (sometimes for me)

that being said the real answer is it's a sheep goty, ofcourse it's going to have a ton of praise , they take what they can get(no offense), especially being a major franchise that appeals to hardcore mature gamers (nmh of last gen except way better production value, though less quirky and fun story, also similar to another game known as eternal darkness

it also continued an ever popular line of cliches... count down timer, real time event quick press simon BS minigame things, loading doors

i dont recall being too hyped for this game before release, until seeing the video of leon's 100 deaths or whatever

it took me a while to actually get around to playing it and i didn't really find it the greatest gift to gaming or even the scariest survival horror game, but it was definately the most playable RE game i've ever touched

But the old ****of Resident Evil is dead. It has evolved, and we'll probably never see the ****from 0-3 return. 4 and 5 are the new ways of the series, and I know Capcom will keep it that way.

Wow i thought that everyone on earth loved and worshiped RE4 :O. I HATE THAT GAME, the irony is that RE4 was one of the main reasons why i bought a new ps2 after selling my old one cuz i was bored, it was the worst RE game imo, it had no survival horror elements whatsoever, it stole a bunch of stuff from many many games and WHAT WAS THE DEAL with the dude that sold u weapons? that's my main problem WHY AND HOW would u buy weapons in that kind of situation, im sure that if im ever in the middle of a city full with zombies chasing me some guy will pop up and sell me weapons and items -.- THAT and the shooting range A LA ZELDA was what bother me the most, which is why i stopped playing and sold the damn game.

The first three weren't scary either, I suppose the ammo-conservation made it more intense though.

At the time the ****cs were scary. Of course now its not as scary. To be honest the Remake for GC was better then RE4. That's what the series was build on. Survival Horror!

you probably played it after all the games it influenced. it was a revolution in tps. gears, mass effect, gta 4. every tps these days is using that over the shoulder view and the re4 shooting mechanics. it was way more than fun.

its because the gameplay is so fresh. you've never played a tps like re4 before unless you played it after gears and every other new game that uses re4 ideas.

yeah i expect it to be added to the gs list after some time. people that dont agree just simply dont get it. im one of hte biggest re fans ever of every single re game. i loved the old style but it was so old school. re4 was a refreshing change and one of the best games ever made. games only completely revolutionize something once in a blue moon. re4 being the one to do it last gen.

Absolutely loved it. It was fairly lengthy, scary (IMO), and I loved the new gameplay style. But.... while it was a great game and pne of my favorites of last generation, I don't understand why it got the critical success it did. Sure it is a AAA title and definately deserves a great review, but I don't really think it is one of the greatest games of all time. But maybe I'm wrong, it's been a while since I've played it.

it simply revolutionized 3rd person shooters, look at all the top games after wards which uses its camera system and over the shoulder gameplay mechanics, gears, mass effect, halo 3 etc.

it had the characters, story. boss battles...to me, a almost PERFECT GAME...nuff said

i would call it perfect. it was so fun and fresh i mustve played through the sp 20 times and also unlocked the handcannon with 5star rating on every level with every character in mercs. i played it nearly every day for the whole year it came out, 2005.

One of my favorite game of all time, for sure.

If RE4 is your notion of an "overrated" game than I personally hope the market gets hit with serveral more "overrated" games in the next few years, for my sake.

it simply revolutionized 3rd person shooters, look at all the top games after wards which uses its camera system and over the shoulder gameplay mechanics, gears, mass effect, halo 3 etc.

it had the characters, story. boss battles...to me, a almost PERFECT GAME...nuff said

i would call it perfect. it was so fun and fresh i mustve played through the sp 20 times and also unlocked the handcannon with 5star rating on every level with every character in mercs. i played it nearly every day for the whole year it came out, 2005.

wow, what did you only own a gamecube?

Or he might have a fetish for Mcauley Culkin look alike's.

Where did all this hate come from?

Resident Evil 4 is not a good survival horror game, but that's because (despite the series connection), it really isn't survival horror. It's a horror-themed action game, and as a third person shooter, the gameplay is absolutely perfect. Plain and simple.

I made a huge post about why Resident Evil 4 is so good yesterday (a link if you're curious), but to sum it up, the camera, sound, control, and design make every single enemy encounter tense and exciting. Because of the way the game is made, each battle is perfectly paced. The single-player campaign's lengthy foray through the backwoods of Spain keeps throwing new enemies and encounters at you, and so it never leaves you bored.

Sure, it's not the scariest thing ever. Sure, the story is hokey crap, and the script is downright laughable at times. But as third-person action goes, it simply doesn't get better. It absolutely nails the basic mechanics of an enemy encounter, and that is why it's easily one of the best games of last generation.

after RE4 look how many 3rd person over the shoulder shooters came out. It totally reinvented the shooter genre in some areas. Made it incredibly fun too.

The characters were imaginative. Controls were great. Graphics fantastic. My favorite game of all time.

Should have been called "Dagon: The Game" because it was definately not a Resident Evil. Maybe one day they will make an actual Resident Evil 4 but knowing Capcom, not for a very long time. I expect RE:5 to be just as bad as 4 was.

The pacing is AWESOME. It's something like 18 hours of solid action without any significant filler or backtracking. Practically every room is a gorgeously constructed set piece. The tech was godly for early 05. It's got a bunch of fun weapons with great visceral impact both visually and aurally. I think it's my most replayed game ever.
