MGS has a great story, Bioshock had a good one. Gears has an average story but I guess I do care about the characters. Apart from that I can't think of another game or series that has a deep and involving story. Someone care to prove me wrong?.

Because they give you everything. The best stories keep you thinking and guessing. Most if not all videogames don't do this. Even games that some consider to have great stories, really don't. Because if you have half a brain you know whats going to happen. Last game I played with a truly great story was kotor, and I can't even remember the one before that.

Uncharted (2), Starcraft, inFamous, God of War (2), Dead Space, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in time (at least I thought it was really good), Batman Arkham Asylum, Oblivion, Halo CE, Final Fantasies, Soul Reaver, Legend of Dragoon, I could keep going...

Really? I can think of qite a few games that had good story telling ...

Planescape Torment, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Fallout 1&2, Baldurs Gate and plenty of other games.

Well written story arcs with twists and good character definition.

a good story can extend your interest in a game, maybe enough to finish it, but really, if it hasnt got good gameplay, are you really going to play it. Assassins Creed is a great example. Good story, boring/crap gameplay = most people not finishing it.

Agreed totally. That's the fundamental flaw in their approach. They give you everything on the plate, tell/imply you how to think and feel and many of them tend to overuse cinematic sequences just for the sake of (in many cases) pathos... At the other hand imagine the game with narrative logic of let's say "Eraserhead"...

MGS isn't a good example of good storytelling in a video game. Good storytelling in a video game shouldn't remove the player from the game to watch cutscenes for 30 minutes.

You talk of storytelling in your title, TC, yet you say Bioshock and MGS. IMO both of those games/series have great stories, but they are not told well. Half-Life has great-storytelling while having a relatively simple plotline until recently.

Because the medium still has *much* of maturing to do in terms of storytelling. Games like MW2 simply hinder it. And saying that MGS - well MGS2 and 4 in particular are prime examples of poor storytelling in video games, to be perfectly honest. Developers like Team Ico, Valve and Bioware understand the medium far better than the vast majority of developers. They are mature in their understanding and approach.

Not exactly. Designers mature, hell I had a semester's Uni class dedicated to Narrative in games. Problem being first and foremost is the gameplay, and people generally cant translate evocative storytelling that uses medium exclusive devices, that has meaning. Not cheap shots like Infinity Ward, rather people like Peter Molyneux to genuinely try to push boundaries of such, despite the systems of his own games (like in Fable) working against this.

Halo CE: still stands up to some of the games today (this gen) Halo 2: mmmm kinda ok, quite 'interesting' in terms of the arbiter - even though no one gave a crap about him at first Halo 3: bwww ahahahaah ahahahahah, ok I'll skip that. In my opinon Halo has such great potential for deeper story but I'm sorry to say BUNGIE sucks when it comes to storytelling, they really do.... HALO:CE got it right the rest are just either too complicated or have been written in a lazy form. MGS 4 was pretty damn good.

I think many games do it right (See GTA, MGS, Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed, esp. Call of Duty series and I'm passing on others). Personally, I think developers may do better than that but it's fair given other factors they have to care for. Books and movies have different ways to tell stories and likewise games sometimes aim for novelty.

You're not looking hard enough. Also, MGS' storytelling (bar maybe 3) is pretty damn terrible, even if the story itself is usually pretty good.

theyre dumb they think its the least important aspect of video games (and it might be from a development point of view compared to coding and debugging) but i think it would determine the great developers from the ordinary ones. I havent played uncharted 2 yet so i dont know about that game. if we are going to spend hours on a game, why not give us the satisfaction of an amazing story during that time to make your development teams name shine.

What part of my post said that there aren't shooters with great stories?

I just said if all you play is shooters then you wont know about a lot of great stories.

The Darkness, System Shock, Deus Ex are all great examples.

To keep adding, Resi Evil series, Dead Space etc. I could keep goin on, there are tons of games that involve gunplay that have great stories, but from his examples only using shooters I'm assuming he's not a fan of the God Of Wars, Devil May Cry's and RPG's.

I think part of the problem is that user interactivity tends to play havoc with planned sequences that are designed to elicit emotions and so on. It's what I call the hard choice between free roaming (Western RPGs like the Fallout series) and compelling storytelling (Japanese RPGs like DQ and Persona). It's harder to get the elements right in an WRPG-type game because the developer can't predict (as easily) the player's actions prior to the sequence (or even if the player will reach that sequence at all). Think of storytelling like driving. It's a lot easier to do with only one person (the storyteller) behind the wheel. Put a second set of hands (the player's) in the mix, and things have the potential to get messy.

No offense, but MGS does NOT have a great story. It doesn't have a good story... It doesn't have an ok story. It may be presented very well, but it's just rubbish... in my honest opinion. And as you all know: A person's opinion is like a person's faith - can't touch it.

Story telling in games is getting alot better now and is given more time that it would of gotten say 10 years ago. It still has a long way to go though the way i see it alot of games have a decent story but the way it is presented is pretty poor, even looking at the best games out there for story telling the structure they use is rather basic and hasnt moved on much. Games need to evole in to their own structure so the story and gameplay feel more natrual together rather than having each closed up in concrete rooms with no room for them to blend together. Ive just finished uni studying these things and being honest alot of studios at the moment are either sticking with what works or playing tag along gaming really needs something to stand out from the crowd.

I disagree that it is "rubbish", but to answer your question - A couple reasons:

1) Story telling involves taking time away from the gamer actually playing the game. The better and more complicated the story you want to have, the more time you have to have the audience sitting there doing nothing. This can alienate a whole group of gamers who don't care about movies or story and only want to play the game.

2) Some genres tend to be easier to add in a story than others. RPGs are obviously the easiest, and it seems like FPS are the hardest. The way I see it, the closer your game gets to being a shooter/FPS, the tougher it gets to have a real story because it would mean having to add too much movie/reading. And really, people playing shooters just want the action of shooting and blowing stuff up. So why bother spending money on something your target audience doesn't care about?

3) Personal opinion. One person's Lord of the Rings is another person's Twilight. Not everyone likes the same things when it comes to story.

Uncharted, Final fantasy, and even MGS ( altough cutscenes are too big ) are great ways of story telling IMO. I like the story to be told trough cutscenes and i dont see any problem with it. I HATE the way some games tell their story, even if its a good story, like Bioschock, Half life and many WRPG. I dont like when my characters have no personality, that bull**** of you are the character never works. I hate the way bioshock story is told trough these radio things you find. I never had the patience to read all that crap. I gave up the game half way trough.

Hmm. It's true -- there aren't any game stories that can stand against something like The Godfather or Shakespearean writings, at least in terms of plot. Metroid Prime is a good example of a game that does story well -- and it doesn't even have a plot really :P. Maybe more games should be like that?

Hmm. It's true -- there aren't any game stories that can stand against something like The Godfather or Shakespearean writings, at least in terms of plot. Metroid Prime is a good example of a game that does story well -- and it doesn't even have a plot really :P. Maybe more games should be like that?Lethalhazard
Metroid Prime was more context and less plot. If you wanted to know more about the planet, you would have to explore for clues, much like Bioshock's audio recordings.

Because they're not novels. If I want a good story, I read some Russian literature or some other classics (Dostoyevsky, Pushkin, Chekhov, etc.).

I disagree. I could list tons and tons of games that have stories as good as, or better than, the games you mentioned. They are certainly out there.
