Why is the Xbox 360 an incredibly closed system unlike their flagship product?

It seems to me Microsoft enjoys nickel and diming everyone for services that should be free from the very start. Want to play multiplayer? Pony up cash first. Want to watch Netflix? Pony up some cash first too. Imagine if you had to pay money to play multiplayer or use Hulu on the PC? There would be a massive outcry. It also seems like if Microsoft could nickel and dime PC users, they would. Sony all the way. At least they respect their users with essentials continuing to be free and if you want extra stuff then pay for Plus. It's how Live should work but all Microsoft cares is screwing their customers with every fee they can invent.

XBox Live has been around a long time. Even though the fee is use to allow online gameplay, it's also used to help Microsoft develop more titles and keep Microsoft out of the red. Sony doesn't charge any online fee. They tried to use HOME as a way of getting money from PS3 gamers, but that failed miserably. Then they tried some kind of online magazine after the OPM died. That also failed. Now they have PSPlus, which is better, but I don't think they have as many subscribers as M$ XBL. Sure, Microsoft needs to change their XBL fees, but as long as people keep paying it and it helps to make the XBox division profitable, I doubt much will change. Sony may even do the same thing with the PS4 considering how much they've lost over the past 4 years.

They do it because they can. You don't see Lems complaining about Live fees, so they must think that it is worth it. MS tried pulling that with PC gamers, and it got shoved back in MS's face, so they removed it.

They're trying to gently nudge pc that way with windows 8.

One of the many reasons windows 8 sales are balls.

What you don't want to admit to yourself is that Sony secretly sits up at night and fantasizes about making money off the online system they pay to exist. Only because they needed a reason to be seen as an awesome alternative to XBOX live have they adopted this free model. It is not because they care about you and 15 years ago they slept with your biological mother.

For the consoles, as it stands, the only way to get something released is to go through Sony/MS/Nintendo first.

On the PC anyone in the world can do whatever they want, and release it without any bit of interference.

You mean shady practises such as installing rootkits on users computers so they can.... oh hang on, wasn't that Sony...oh yes it was:

The software, which proved undetectable by anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, was in the form of a rootkit that opened the door for other malware to infiltrate computers unseen as well.  Once the rootkit was exposed by security researcher Mark Russinovich on Oct. 31, 2005, all hell broke loose, with Sony BMG botching its initial response ("Most people don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?" went the infamous quote from Thomas Hesse, then president of Sony BMG's Global Digital Business.) and later recalling products, issuing and re-issuing software removal tools, and settling lawsuits with a number of states, the Federal Trade Commission and Electronic Frontier Foundation.  Rootkits have since become common among modern malware, with one security company this past summer even demonstrating how a rootkit might one day plague the Google Android smartphone operating system.  The sophisticated Stuxnet worm identified this year as a threat to Windows PCs and industrial systems also uses a rootkit.

We all <3 Sony, they are so good to us and would never do a bad thing, unlike that evil Microsoft....

I really don't think that was the case. The 360 didn't even complete its first year when they announced free online (it might of actually been before it, I can't remember). They were still coming off last-generation with the success of the PS2 so I highly doubt that was the case.

Because with an Operating System you're making software to go with Hardware, Microsoft themselves have almost no control over 3rd party Hardware, the PC market is so vast you can have a computer that has 3 to probably 4 or 5 different pieces of Hardware in it from 5 different companies.

Not to mention the 3rd Party Software that Windows supports that includes Steam, iTunes, Origin, or things that customize your desktop like Rainmaker or Rocket Dock.

Microsoft has almost no control over the PC space, despite having the most popular Operating System.

The Xbox line however, they can dictate that to whatever they want, the Hardware is theirs,The software is theirs, the Online is theirs, everything on that system is pretty much theirs.

You don't have Steam on the Xbox, You have very limited Origin and UPlay on Xbox, Google isn't even on Xbox unless you used INTERNET EXPLORER on there to get it, other wise you're welcomed with BING.

Pretty much, the Xbox 360 system is something Microsoft can fully say it's THEIRS with No 3rd Party plaguing the system (except 3rd Party Games, but that's a different subject altogether.)

If the online is good enough I'll pay for it.

I've paid out-of-pocket for my own PC game servers so that I can always have the best experience for some of my favorite games with friends

I've paid $15 a month for WoW because all the free MMOs sucked

And I'd pay for Xbox Live if I was more focused on console gaming. Whenever I go over to my friend's house to play Halo I just feel the gaming experience is so much nicer, and clean in comparison to my PS3.

It's all about value. If I intend to play online game for hundreds of hours, and enjoy the games a lot, the fees don't bother me so much

This is why i never bought an xbox. I refuse to suppor the pay to pay scheme, no free games, and exclusives that are the same 3 franchises that don't interst me in the slightest (they put the franchises on pc for 1 or 2 games per franchise and never finished them (halo 1 and 2 for example), so that you would have to buy an xbox). MS tried this crap with games for windows live and PC gmaers revolted...hence the lack of support for GFWL from them.

Now with windows 8 they are trying the same thing which is why I refuse to update. I don't want a closed system where all software is gimped on a virtual machine and sold through a closed storefront. Also devs have to pay ms to even put their games on that storefront. Lets not even get into how visual studio 2012 express supposedly doesn't let you dev for standard desktop win32 and is web or metro only.... ugggh.... MS gets worse every year since Gates left. Balmer is a greedy prick and windows xp and 7 are the only good versions.... ./end rant.

Ones an OS and ones a console. :|

As if the others are open systems and it's just MS that has a closed system.

Microsoft tried to make deals with developers that games become windows live exclusives  (at that point it had multiplayer yearly fee). But the whole thing failed because majority of pc gamers didnt bite.

Ummm, probably because all their PC manufacturing Windows customers would be very pissed if they started competing with them by making their own PC's? :P

Die hard 360 fans will tell you they pay for XBL cause its the best online service available.... At first they didnt believe it, but repeating it millions of times throughout the years eventually leads you to becoming brainwashed and believe its true !!

on the other hand I dont blame MS, like all other companies their aim is to make profits and XBL is a money maker !!!

I dont know how true this is, but I have heard many times that microsoft uses some of the xbox live fee money to buy cod dlc as timed exclusive. I assume they make tons of money when people first choose 360 version over ps3, then buy all the dlc.

Its business strategy... MS has a different approach to gaming compared to SONY or Nintendo..

I'm just a gamer so am too ignorant to discuss who's best but imo MS surely managed to expand their market share and are now in a solid position...

As I posted earlier, one cannot blame MS for wanting to make money, all companies do that...

The ps3 is a closed off system, not the 360.
