Why is the Xbox 360 an incredibly closed system unlike their flagship product?

The ps3 is a closed off system, not the 360.

Enforcer246

All the consoles are closed systems. Always have been, probably always will be.

When was the last time you upgraded or modified the hardware on a console (apart from maybe a hard drive ) or ran a third party programme that hasn't been authorised by the manufacturer?

Because lems like to brag about how much they get ripped off and how much M$ makes. Noone else is dumb enough to stand for such treatment.

Eddie-Vedder

Ya, and you can't buy any HDD for 360 unless it's MS's. you used to have to buy a WiFi adaptor or $99, you have to buy rechargable battery packs for the controllers after you've already spent $50 on the controller. HDDVD was a $200 add on, you pay to play online, I had to pay $8 to MS on my 360 for a Patriots theme when I had it.

PS3; WiFi always been built in, HDDVD player built in, controllers come with built in rechargabel battery packs, always been 1,000s of free themes you can download straight to your PS3 via it's browser and I made my own custom theme for free using Theme Creator and Paint.Net, has free online multiplayer, and you can put any brand HDD in it for very cheap.

Americans are the biggest consumers in the world and we make more trash per person than any other country and more Americans own 360s like 3.3 to 2 over PS3 and that's where MS is making it's killing is off of Americans that are pumping money to them by buying all that from them.

It seems to me Microsoft enjoys nickel and diming everyone for services that should be free from the very start. Want to play multiplayer? Pony up cash first. Want to watch Netflix? Pony up some cash first too. Imagine if you had to pay money to play multiplayer or use Hulu on the PC? There would be a massive outcry. It also seems like if Microsoft could nickel and dime PC users, they would. Sony all the way. At least they respect their users with essentials continuing to be free and if you want extra stuff then pay for Plus. It's how Live should work but all Microsoft cares is screwing their customers with every fee they can invent.

Kjranu

they already trying charging pc gamers for playing online, didn't work

pc gamers are not as stupid as xbox fans that think they are getting anything better for paying and will just bend and take it because its da microsoft.

MS produced a myth that Live is 2nd internet connection ( aka magical "online on console" as they discribe) forgetint that they already pay for internet connection and "online" to ISP, this allowed MS to put total BS like that and order to pay for services that available for free to any device connected to internet. You can't create such illusion on PC, so people can't be fooled there. Imo this is biggest BS this gen and i was feeling that im only one on SW seeing this :p

It seems to me that there are too many sony fanboys in need of a FN job. psn is FREE AND YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. So go enjoy your low res, screen tearing, chat crippled, no real time achievement comparisons on your garbage ps3. Leave the REAL online gaming to those of us that can afford it.

Why would you even watch Netflix on a console unless you're a broke loser?

 at thinking a company respects or cares about you. Sony has to have free online. Its the only way they could have competed with the 360 this gen. mems_1224
Lets see if ps4 service will remain free and specially with gaikai.

Because Microsoft doesn't have an open platform competitor in the console market; they're turning the same dial console manufacturers have been tampering with up. MicroPCs might change that.

XBox Live has been around a long time. Even though the fee is use to allow online gameplay, it's also used to help Microsoft develop more titles and keep Microsoft out of the red. Sony doesn't charge any online fee. They tried to use HOME as a way of getting money from PS3 gamers, but that failed miserably. Then they tried some kind of online magazine after the OPM died. That also failed. Now they have PSPlus, which is better, but I don't think they have as many subscribers as M$ XBL. Sure, Microsoft needs to change their XBL fees, but as long as people keep paying it and it helps to make the XBox division profitable, I doubt much will change. Sony may even do the same thing with the PS4 considering how much they've lost over the past 4 years.

But Xbox Live is plastered with Ad's...why do they need to charge you if they get tons of ad revenue already?

Lems have been trying to justify paying to access their own internet for so long the new reply is now "MS wants your money so just give it to them and stop complaining".

Whats hilarious is they repay your blind devotion with Kinect crap.

this is when you realize you don't have a pc and just put a random sig so you can hide behind it. Because it's so hard to put a spec of a pc on the sig, it truly proves you have a PC! i'd rather go with your ignorance on xbox live as proof you DON'T have a pc.

xbox live as a gaming service actually offers more than even pc or psn. Its functionality is built into games so halo and armored core use the same VoIP, match making, and other things.

Steam isn't integrated with the majority of games, its not an online service, its a store, and has a community overlay while running the game. But the games are still seperate.

PSN and PC both have little support for online features, so things like VoIP, matchmaking are a implemented differently per game or use third party games to handle it ex: ventrilo With that said,

live is worth **** because the differences it really makes to online gaming are pretty much transparent to the gamer.

linux is a free for all and thats why its never really taken off. The actual windows distribution might be closed but its still an open platform for developers to make applications for.
