Why is there no PS3 price drop?

Sony doesn't seem to care it's still being outsold by Nintendo and MS five years later. They both got a $200 system and what's Sony doing? Rather than entice millions of gamers (and now millions of pirates!) at that sweet spot, they're... no I'm actually curious, what are they doing?

Because putting out a 200$ system would cause them to lose more money. The PS3 is selling fine and they're finally making a profit on hardware.

Why should they? The 200$ Arcade Xbox 360 is hardly competiton to the PS3... And the PS3 is outselling the 360 since it was released... chaplainDMK

Probably because Sony just finally started to make a small profit on the PS3. If they dropped the price now they would go back to loosing money on each PS3 sold.

This and the fact that as long as they are selling systems at a good pace there is no reason for them to drop the price. If sales drop off then expect a price drop.

I think Sony might drop the price next year, unless maybe they take out the wi-fi, no more blu ray movie playback and so on... dude the PS3 has been the console that offers you more features since day 1.

Because they want to make more money? Because they want more publishers & developers paying them royalties? Because they want a bigger install base and more people buying software? Why do you think Microsoft and Sony are releasing Move/Kinect? To go against Nintendo's market share, that's why.

We'll be seeing a price drop in 2011 most likely. Because even with Halo and the Slim, the PS3 is outselling the 360 worldwide.

That might be true in the UK but here in the US they are the same price $299.

Blue Ray... yes

OPEN bluetooth.... yep

1. Free to play online..... yep
2. Plenty of Third party Peripherals including Wheels for GT5.... yes
3. very few problems with consoles breaking down ... Cheek
4. No charge from Sonyto use Netflex, Hulu+... true
5. Plenty of exclusive games made by Sony first party.... Yes
6. Swapable HDD that is not propriatary so you do not have to PAY Sony... True

Maybe some people like to pay more by being nickled and Dimed and pay more overall over the years for their console but I like to just pay the 299 up front than take it in the end.

Live 2005 - 2010 50.00 = 250 40.00= 200 30.00= 150 Going foward its going to be $10.00 a year more.

Buy a used one. I bought one for $200 last year with partial-BC (80gb MGS4 model). Works beautifully.

They did that because they were forced to. I expect Microsoft to drop the price now if Kinect doesn't work out because they've made plenty of money on hardware and can afford to do it.

well, actually, the ps3 has not outsold the 360, especially in NPD, and worldwide numbers indicate the 360 is still in the lead.....soooo, maybe a $250 PS3 is what they needPlagueless

It certainly not outsold it in total figures, but it stands to reason it's been outselling it year-to-year (for the most part), due to decreasing the lead the 360 has over it.

Agreed the a $250 console could be the clincher, but who knows... Ahhh well.

The Wii is a cheap friggin console about half the size of the PS3 and can't do nearly as much and doesn't do gaming and movies at the quality the PS3 does. The 360s $200 console is only a 4gb HDD which has to be upgraded immediately and that makes it cost more than the PS3. You buy a PS3 for $300 and take it home it does more than the other 2 for $300. The 360 you take it home you have to pay $60 to game online, you can't play HD movies in it and you have to pay $13 more for each controller to be charge and play.

The difference in price from the PS3 to other consoles like 360 is easy to understand.

look at the things you get for it.

1. Larger HDD (180GB vs. 4GB, a larger 360 HDD is about $100)
2. Free online ($0.00 vs. up to $60.00py, $300 over a 5 year period)
3. Blu-ray player (not even an option with other consoles, at least a $100 value)

The simple reason why they don't drop the price, they don't have to, it's a great value the way it is.

Because in the magic world we live in, things cost money to produce. If they were selling PS3s at $10, more people would buy them, sure, but costing $200 to make they'd loose money for every console sold. It economics and a $200 PS3 would net them very little money if not cause them to loose money (although I'd guess the former)

they cant lower the price... a basic blu-ray player costs 200-300 dollars.. this thing plays games too(at least i hear it does)

so they would lose money.

360 Slim + Fifa 11 =£224.99

PS3 Slim + UC2 =£249.99

You'd have to be a nutter to pick the first one over the second.

Sony is finally making money. There is no reason for them to lower the price.
