i don't get it too
to me it was a generic TPS shooter
i enjoyed it tho
What's this? A game DOESN'T need to "reinvent the wheel" in order to be fun? Ha! Well clearly sir, the cow hype machine has brainwashed you.
HELP ME :(

gears of war campaigns are shit compared to uc and most people find gears multiplayer too hardcore but thats the best part about the game
i agree uc - single play gears- multiplayer
I like gears more, but that's only because i enjoy multiplayer more than single player in games like these
1. Unoriginal (i.e. every Naughty Dog Game).
2. Linear.
3. Cinematic.. i.e. constantly taking control away from the player.
Primarily it is the casual, the hipsters and the young this game impresses. Older, mature gamers who have had interest of the medium for an extensive amount of time recognize the real pioneers.
Im neither casual, hipster or particularly young as you put it and yet i love the Uncharted series. The story and characters have a lot to do with things, i dont understand whay that is so hard to believe or accept by those that continually put the game down.
Im eagerly awaiting the 4th game in the series and cant wait to see what ND can do with new hardware.
Good story, characters, graphics, balanced with dull gameplay, limited weapons, no customization, no set of skills, there's no sense of progression or abilities to be gained. And puzzles that would insult the intelligence of a 10yo.
I still enjoy them because I love Indy Jones.
Because Uncharted is basically a series of Indiana Jones games done right. And growing up as a huge Indiana Jones fan, this appeals to me.
I don't understand why people on this forum knock it for being "cinematic". It's a well made action/adventure franchise with the best set pieces in gaming and probably the most gorgeous graphics on console.
While I can't be certain I often consider the praise UC got, was largely due to a reaction to the games around in general. The UC series were fairly good games, but they did 2 things very important, the first thing did not really appear till UC2, but to be honest that game was almost as fun to Watch as it were to play, so it had a good story, there exists games with good stories, but this were a good thing to UC2, the socond thing was that it was happy go luckey, tongue in cheek all the way, which was in start contrast with most of the games comming out aiming to be "gritty and dark" Making it look quite fresh and appealing compared to what other offerings were flowing around.
As I stated I do not find the uncharted games to be bad, and I am quite happy that they came about, epsecially because I was sick and tired of how serious most games wanted to be taken. And I think in part UC3 is less well liked because it is darker then the rest. The story felt tired.
But the UC series never had truely good gameplay. It uses gameplay as a Vessel for the story, not the story as a Vessel for the gameplay. Which understandibly irks some people. Especially given the industry and how "streamlined" games have become (linier push awesome butten to continue). And in alot of ways I think that UC catch flak for being a good example to underline this, infact it has been used as a posterboy. Which is not really truely fair. It is like GoW and quicktime events, a pleague on the industry, but the games were quite good, and did not intend for every damn dev to shove QTA into every game following.
I can be wrong ofcourse, I doubt there is one "truth" the uncharted series never were my favorite series, but atleast I enjoyed the games while I playied them. Which is mor ethen I can say for a Whole lot of games the last 10 years.
Because the game play is accessible to the masses, the graphics and cinematics were gorgeous, the characters likable, and the story was terrific. Not really that difficult to understand, really.
Sometimes I want an easy game. Controller-chucking-difficult has its place, and there are plenty of games that deliver a challenge if that's what you're in the mood for, but sometimes you want a "vacation" and be entertained rather than punished.

If anyone's a "hipster", its you "hardcore" gamers that can't run or jump unless you're hitting the "X" button. Hipsters are against anything mainstream and Uncharted is most definitely mainstream.
@Zelda187
Hows it possible somebody with the name Zelda in their account can still believe Uncharted is actually an Action Adventure game ? Did you even play Legend Of Zelda ?
Yeah
A Link to the Past is one of the Top 3 greatest games of all-time IMO.
But that doesn't mean that I'm going to downplay the Uncharted series. I don't give two shits if it's "cinematic". I'm pretty sure that's the angle they were pushing for anyway.
Nathan Drake is one of the most charismatic protagonists in gaming over the past 15-20 years and Sully is easily one of the better supporting cast members in gaming in a long time. It's a fun series with some simple yet engaging storylines, great characters, and hands down the best set pieces in gaming.
@Zelda187: 100% agreed! Anyone who hates on Uncharted doesn't see the beauty in it. Zelda and Uncharted actually both share that same kind of charm, charm and ability to relate to.. you'll never get with dark, grim militaristic shooters (call of duty, halo) with gruff lead characters (gears of war). it's just not as memorable or as fun...
@inb4uall: im hoping uncharted 4 features less shooting baddies, more exploration and puzzle solving. like tomb raider 1-5. the market doesnt seem to want that in a game anymore, though
I wish God of War would return to a focus on both puzzles and fighting too but I don't think that is gonna happen either.
It's not the darling. I mean, it gets praised to high heaven b Playstation fanboys but it's also put under a far more critical lense than games like Halo or Zelda.
I'm probably just echoing whats already been said, but..
They're good games, worthy of praise. They're solid, they looked outstanding for their time and while the gameplay is nothing amazing, it's still decent enough.
Good games wrapped up in stellar production values.
Now do they deserve the massive amounts of praise they get? No, I don't think so. UC2 was pretty great, 3 was good, 1 was meh.
What makes this franchise still going and still being hyped as the ultimate messiah of gaming whereas games of similar level of entertainment such as Gears of War had hitherto been met with massive scorn later on, or blockbuster artistic games like BioShock series literally died?
What makes the Uncharted series the ultimate darling of video games that gets somehow manages to be completely bulletproof to criticism of the videogaming industry / journalism "industry"? I know only regular gamers are capable of criticising it, the industry won't. And a bonus question: why do you think making another Uncharted would make a difference now - what do you expect from it?
Because most Cows can relate to such a feminine hero and love to face legions of the dumbest enemies in the history of gaming.
It's been a mystery to me ever since I played Uncharted 2 from start to finish. Usually I can understand why people can enjoy a game even if I personally don't, but with Uncharted it's different. There are just way too many bad design choices to ignore. I constantly use Uncharted 2 as an example of bad game design. It's a what not to do.. It's a particularly bad use of the medium. It has sub par shooting mechanics, boring enemies, high repetition, the worst "platforming" which I'd call on rails climbing that serves no purpose whatsoever, and a terrible story. I don't understand why anybody would want to put themselves through the bullcrap that Uncharted 2 puts you through.
Yet it's praised like it's the second coming.
I think people like the clever writing/humour, high production values and frequency of set pieces.
The gamepay is really damn average. I'd say the firefights are actually below average due to the unresponsive aiming. The set pieces are cool but everything in between is incredibly mediocre.
Tomb Raider 2013 shat all over the Uncharted series from a gameplay standpoint.
I agree. ESPECIALLY Uncharted 3. That game was a solid turd. The gameplay and shooting was awful.
As far as the cinematics and setpieces in the series- they are kind of hard to top. They are excellent. The same goes for the characters.
So basically the games are great when I'm not playing them.

Ummmm... I wish there was a game that captured what it's like to be Indiana Jones. That would be awesome. Unfortunately Uncharted is very far from being that.
Indiana Jones is about adventure, exploration and solving puzzles to locate your next clue. He used his wits and avided confrontation as much as possible.
Uncharted has you murder waves of heavily armed enemies, doesn't let you explore anything and only lets you half solve a very few miniscule puzzles.
Haters: "We don't like this game. Therefore nobody should. Not the majority of critics praising the game nor the millions of gamers who purchased it."
A nice summing up of this thread.
beyond just being absurdly fun and the closest a video game has ever come to feeling like youre playing out an interactive movie, it is by far the most graphically amazing game relative to the specs of the machine running it ever produced. nothing else even comes close. ND games are also the ONLY games ive ever played where the voice acting is actually well done and doesnt come off as horrible and cringeworthy. its just insane how far ahead of every other development studio ND is.
why the media? low standards
Why Uncharted 2 specifically: Because its genuinely a really good tps, what it lacks in originality it more than makes up for in overall execution. The pacing and set piece variety is on point, and are largely fun to do, and aren't overly scripted to make you feel like a passenger. The train level, the monastery, nepal, the hopping from car to car set piece, all good times, all different. The shooting mechanics in general were good as opposed to straight lousy n 3 and 1, and purely on a presentation level it looked pretty, the soundtrack was solid, and the banter among the characters was fun.
Greatest TPS of all time or whatever? Nah, but a damn good game because frankly the pacing was excellent. 3 and 1? not good games, at all. In fact I would argue the original is a poor game, even in 2007.
Well first, Uncharted usually sets a standard for visuals, Nathan Drake is also a great protagonist and was one of the stand outs of the last gen. Gameplay wise it's mechanics are solid. Storytelling is pretty good too. Notice there is a difference between plot and story telling/narrative. How good a story is and how well it's told are two different things, Uncharted does the latter very well. Same with The Last of Us, the plot was nothing special but the narrative stood out. Naughty Dog can do narrative very well.
Its the best third person series since Max Payne. It nails a lot of different facets when other games would be lucky to get one or two right.
Uncharted humanized gaming with lovable characters and memorable moments. It made people really pay attention. That's why.
Elena Fisher. Last year's model. Even people who didn't play the game remember this moment.
I swear its like Cows never played Vanquish....
I have, and I love both Vanquish and Uncharted. Are you gonna tell me I cant enjoy both?

Vanquish is just a faster paced Gears of War. It really cannot be compared to Uncharted when the game lacks verticality. Verticality provides variety in the gameplay and it injects variety to the level design too.
Vanquish is an inferior game compared to Uncharted in almost every way. That doesn't mean that it cannot be enjoyed though.
The video below is not for you guys, I just like posting it on every Uncharted discussion. lol
It's the perfect blend of graphics, fun gameplay, story, lovable characters and quality performance. It's something you can have instant fun with, a wild theme park ride that has cutting edge graphics, a good well earned experience after a day of work or study. Most people would play that instead of grind their lives away on something that rapes your eyes with a million micro management, irritating puzzles and endless grinding.
Oh did I mention it's made by Naughty Dog who's one of if not the most talented studio in the industry?
