Why isn't the PS3 dead yet?

I really do wonder. Just about all the signs seem to indicate that the PS3 should be dead and buried but somehow it just keeps limping on, like that houseguest that just won't go away. Here's what I mean in more detail:

The PS3 has lost most of its big exclusives

Doesn't this usually kill off a console? When you lose something as huge as Grand Theft Auto, you really have to wonder how this console is still existant. I mean, for a game that was exclusive to the PS brand for most of its life, the PS3 got royally trounced, losing 60% of the sales for GTA4 to the 360, a console that had NO history of Grand Theft Auto prior to that date. Same went for Devil May Cry. Same is going to go for Metal Gear Solid (you don't REALLY think that Konami is going to be suicidal enough to only market to the PS3 market do you? That's like a PC game developer developing a game for just Macs).

Everything gets delayed

It makes you wonder why people wait, doesn't it? I mean, they get promised something amazing. It gets delayed, sometimes for a whole year. It's disappointing (case in point: Lair). You think the PS3 fans learned their lesson, but it happens again (Heavenly Sword) and again (Ratcet and Clank) and again (Home). And still they stick with the console, as though waiting some more would do them any good. If the 360 did this, if Halo 3 didn't come out until September of this year, and Gears 1 was released three months from now, and MGS4 was released on September of last year, I have a feeling the Xbox 360 fans would be mighty pissed at Micro$oft. But for some reason, the PS3 survives this travesty...

No good games, now or in the future

At least, none of the "good" games on the PS3 are any better than their equivalents on the 360, and oftentimes significantly worse. Their major franchises are jumping ship, going multiplatform because they can't make ends meet otherwise. How does this not kill off a game console? Isn't it called a gaming console for a reason? How can a gaming console survive with no games? It doesn't make any sense!

After all this HOW can the PS3 still be alive? Voodoo magic?

But, I think I have a theory as to how the PS3 is able to survive despite its mulitude of failures, and I alluded to it in my second paragraph. Much like the Apple Macintosh, it's all about the fanboys. If you think about it, Macs are indeed a lot like the PS3 these days. Apple used to dominate the home computer market, after they deposed the mighty IBM (Sony deposed the mighty Nintendo with the original Playstation).

But now, just as Windows has relegated the Macintosh to a niche market mostly kept alive by a devoted band of rather blind devotees, it's looking more and more like the PS3 brand is going to suffer a similar fate, limping along in obscurity and being kept alive by brand loyalty and little else. What disturbs me the most, though, is that people keep feeding into this, like those cults that somehow convince dozens of people to commit suicide so they can hitch a ride to Heaven on the tails of a comet.

because its still got some life left in it to play MGS4 and other games coming out. its not a bad system at all really

IVe been enjoying mine quit a lot. I guess it is a bit of a streatch. Afterall, there really isnt aa GREAT console this gen.

Simple it sells more then the 360 , without the help of Mgs4 & FF (both having A Multi-Million Fan Base)Hardpunkfan

lol, another cow claiming the sales argument just because the PS3 started selling like a real console should after close to 2 years of dismal sales and flops - the kinda figures MS had with the 360 at the same time in it's cycle and a figure shattered by the Wii.

And why do you feel the need to judge? I did not indicate that I was neccessarily a fanboy of the Wii or the Xbox 360, merely pointing out the many flaws of the PS3. For the record, I purchased my own PS3 about six months ago and I must say I was extremely disappointed with the product. I don't understand the mentality that just because you purchase something that automatically makes you a rabid fan. I'm sure we've all purchased things, not just games and consoles, that we ended up not liking. So I don't see why having purchased a PS3 should make me a Cow. Or why owning a 360 and a Wii should make me a Lemming or a Sheep.

Don't get me wrong, the 360 has its fair share of problems, not least of which the jet engine disk drive and its notorious reliability issues. The Wii has been pretty solid these last few months and is the only console I've yet to find any real fault with. Nevertheless the topic wasn't about those consoles. It was a genuine attempt to understand how a console with so many failings could still be on the market and actually selling. And how people who purchase it can justify that kind of expense to themselves.

Which goes back to the heart of what I was trying to ask: why isn't it? All evidence seems to say that it should be, but it's still alive, which defies all logic. I just wanted to know how those PS3 people justify the expense to themselves, because it really seems like to me they're the ones keeping the console on life support.

To be fair, I don't see how Rugby is more sophisticated than baseball in any way, but it's all really moot as if sophistication was really all that mattered in sporting events we'd all play golf and croquet above other sports.

But I digress. As far as the OP is concerned, Sony is currently in last place, true, but console manufacturers have to expect and whether this inevitability when it occurs. If every company dropped out of the industry when their product lost the generation, the only one of the current manufacturers still in existence would be Sony (and they might not have made it out of this generation).

19 million to 12 million, you also had the PS3 drop 200 of its price just to get neck and neck with the 360. Watch when 360 drops it price this fall in NA. 3 to 1 sale ratio once again. you're overlooking the actual SYSTEM...

as far as games, yes, the console has come quite short, but the actual box in front of you has features and abilities and doodads that have been untapped so far, and it is the potential of these things that retain faith in the PS3.

But seriously, yeah, Sony lost its exclusive to GTA and Devi may Cry for finacial reasons for Capcom and Take Two.. they found it more profitable to be on MS platform too.

ANyways, i smell a big bad lemming, or a HATER. LOL

I just thought I'd say: isn't it interesting that all the multiplatforms are going in one direction? As in, it's Sony exclusives that are constantly being made to be multiplatform and not Xbox exclusives. You don't hear, "Breaking news! Jade Empire 2 will be on the PS3 too!". As for Metal Gear Solid, they probably will keep it PS3 exclusive for a while, but if even a massive seller like Grand Theft Auto and Devil May Cry needed to be multiplatform to make money, you can bet your butt that Konami will port it to the 360 sooner or later.

I am more than a little suprised, though, that I seem to be the only person here who bought a PS3 only to seriously regret the decision. Has nobody else bought this thing, then six months later sat down and thought, "wow, what a huge mistake that was"?
