LONG READ AHEAD. IF YOU ARE STUPID, AND/OR DO NOT LIKE TO READ, PLEASE TURN AWAY FROM THIS TOPIC. WELCOME TO SYSTEM WARS, THE MOST ILLOGICAL PLACE ON EARTH. I'LL BE WAITING FOR PEOPLE WHO SAY "THIS GAME WILL GET A HIGH A/LOW AA SCORE"/SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT, WITHOUT REASONING

1. A variety of landscapes. Julian Eggebrecht has stated several times that there will be a huge-differencity in levels: they have levels which primarily take place over ocean, creepy areas, artic areas, deserts, canyons, swamps, lush farmlands, and alot more. Also they have 2 massive cities (1 of which you'll be firebombing, and 1 you will be defending). This is a really good thing....because I don't want to have to look at the same environment everytime.

2. Massive boss fights. If you've seen any of the lair pics....or seen any of the video interviews...you know there are going to be alot of massive boss fights with a variety of creatures. They have massive whale beasts, which act as troop transports/bombing transports, they have massive elephant-type creatures, which act as troop transports, they have a giant-sea serpent at ocean.....which suddenly comes to life as you get close to it, and tons more. The boss fights will be on a shadow-of-the-colossus level (ok...maybe not as good as SOTC, but prety damn good by the looks of it).

3. Killer story. Ok...I doubt this story will be "dreamfall" level(dreamfall is the game which has the best story ever), but it will be very good all it's own. In the 1st level, it's a 9/11 feeling...your city is under attack and you must mount your dragon and defend it. The continent you are own is succumbing to global-warming (caused by volcanic activity)..and your area is 1 of the few places with water, lush farmland, and food. The "enemy" invades yout city for supplies, they were cast out due to religous reasons. They twist around your perception, and make you think "is this war right? Should we be doing this", and to say the least, the enemy changes dramatically in the story. They thought about the iraq war/vietnam war when developing the story.

4. Beatiful Graphics. Ok...we have tons of despute about the graphics of this game. I hope you all realize the comments are basically made by nervous lemmings. The graphics right now....look amazing in it's own right, and could pass as a next-gen game...but it's only an alpha    and the graphics will only get better. Any person who looks at the video and says it's ugly is a moron. It could pass as a next gen game (with a few tweaks of course), and it would still be AAA now.

5. Massive lord-of-the-ring battles. Have you seen how many people/dragons there are on screen???? I thought kameo, resistance, and heavenly sword had alot.....Lair just takes the cake. You have alot of dragons fighting in the air, and mass amount of foot-solders attacking each other/enemy dragons. From the alpha videos they appear to be pretty smart. When they fought your dragon, they stood away/pulled out bows/fired away (instead of just using their sword..). It'd be nice if they had the bigger monsters (the toro) go head to head with you when you landed...I'm sure they'll fix this up in the real version. There are also a large variety of enemies on screen at once...instead of just 1-enemy type (like in kameo..there were only trolls).

6. Transitions of combat. Aerial-ground-dragon ground. All these combat types are very different. In the air, you must be graceful and accurate. On the ground, with Rohn, you have to be dodgy/agile (rohn doesn't have many weapons as a pilot), and on the ground with the dragon, you can just be a tank. You're not always flying a dragon/shooting things in air....and this is nothing like draken/dynastey warriors.

7. Gameplay. OK...we have tons of fanboys saying "it looks repetative", etc. Not only will it probably be awesome using the sixaxis to control the dragon, but it won't be boring at all. You won't be doing to the same thing over and over again (see gears...), and will have surprises thrown at you from everywhere. You'll have the choice to go around combat in 3 different ways (ground-aerial-dragon ground), you can swoop under bridges/through caves to go a different route, there will be massive boss fights where you have to think differently, massive lord of the ring battles in which you just tank everything,1-1 aerial dragon fights, and tons of different ways in which you have to play the game. This game will not get repetative......I bet my 360/future PS3 on it. Right now, the level they have shown, it shows you doing linear things (doing 1 thing in order...then the next, with no choice), but Julian Eggebrecht has said the game for the most part is non-linear. The 1-1 fights are somewhere between a real fighting game-punch out. You can attack and dodge....but not really move your dragon, but you can make combos as well. And while you are flying in the air, you can jump off your dragon to kill a dragon, solder, or both who are also flying! I am not sure if you'll actually be able to use the grapple, or if it's a cutscene, or a mini-game thing of some kind.

8. Longeivity/replay. Ok....we don't have a good projection about how long the game is, so I won't go there. But Julian Eggebrecht has stated several times there is a hell of alot of replay, inspired by the rouge squadren medal systems. Most likely, it will have different difficulties. Julian Eggebrecht has stated he has 2 sub-plots which he'd like to put out for DLC, and things to make a beginner-noob's game easier.

  • 9. Detail/technologies. There is tons of detail in the game. The fire/smoke/fog are all volumetric.
  •  The fire, lava, rain, wind, and fur are all rendered in real time.
  • There are parallax shaders on almost every object, including fire and clouds.
  • Water effects, like waves, are in real time.
  • Every second of gameplay, lair renders many physics effects, from your dragon, down to the clock of an enemy.
  • All enemies and allies have their own physics-driven animations, and have individually programmed ragdolls. 
  • Progressive mesh allows a large amount of detail to be placed on objects upclose, and far away.
  • All of the lights, shadows, reflections, and highlights in Lair are in HDR, and are rendered in real-time by the Cell and RSX, thus allowing the lighting scheme to completely change, just like the time of day does in-game, however, due to the advanced programming of the lighting system, it will be ever-changing, and rarely, if ever the same twice.

10. Audio. The score/composition for lair is composed by john debenny (spelling?). The man who did the score for passion of the christ/sin city. All compatible with 7.1 audio, and HDMI. Some of world's most talented musicians were a part of the audio.

11. It's being done by the people who did Rouge Squadren. The 1 for the N64 was amazing, the 1st one for the gamecube was amazing, the 3rd was ok....but paled in comparison to the other 2. SO, they have a good track record. Not only are they known for making good games, they are more well known for making flight-related games/games on a massive-battle scale....both come together to make Lair.

12. Art direction. The game also has some amazing artists working on it. The buildings take up design, and are inspired by middle-eastern/asian/western architecture.

Right now the game is not perfect.....but it is also in the alpha-early alpha stage. They still have some things to fix up, like when my dragon flies through a pillow of smoke, I want the smoke to react to that! And the fire....it just doesn't seem realistic (I know this can be a pain for devs), and the dragon should react when it shoots it (also fire should stream behind the ball as well), and there are still quite a few things which need fixing, but nothing which can't be done in the time frame from now-july. They have stated the frame-rate will not be anything lower than 30, and consistantly will be at least 30. So...this game looks amazing for an alpha, and I'm sure this game will have all the problems fixed by release.

so...right now they need to work on physics on certain things and frame rate...that's about it. Oh, and putting less bloom on certain parts. All of the things that need fixing are dueable by the release date....

So.....explain to me why this game will not get an amazing score? 1up thinks it will (see the latest episode) and many other gaming websites do too.

DO NOT BE FOOLED WHEN A LEMMING/SHEEP/PESSIMISTIC DOW SHOWS YOU SOME OF THE LESSER-CRAPPY-LOW RESOLUTION PICTURES. BUT, BE FOREWARNED, LEMMINGS WILL TELL YOU "THE GAMEPLAY LOOKS SUCKY", IF YOU'VE READ THIS, YOU KNOW THIS GAME HAS MULTIPLE GAME-PLAY PARTS....YOU CAN DO 1-1 DRAGON FIGHTS, LONG RANGE CCOMBAT, AIR COMBAT, ON THE GROUND WITH THE HUMAN, ON THE GROUND WITH THE DRAGON, GIANT BOSS BATTLES, AND MORE. REMEBER, SHOULD IT GET A BAD SCORE....THIS IS THE SAME WEBSITE WHO GAVE SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS AN 8.8!!! IT DESERVES A 9.5 MINIMUM.

I would be shocked if Lair got AAA.

I still wouldn't buy the game though. Gritty dragon combat really does not look fun for me, I don't know why.

Well, I willl hold my judgement as I do with all games.  Then again its about time PS3 users get a good game, Resistence for the last 5 months must be getting old.

Everyone knows that lair has a really high chance of scoring high. But don't get your hopes up. Also you shouldn't use the same topic 3 times, it gets really annoying.

I agree 100%. I dont see the fun in riding a dragon and all this.

And the gameplay I watched off air battles against other dragon riders and having the guy hop on one and kill the guy looked very boring to me... not sure why people are hyping this game so much it really doesn't look great in terms of fun gameplay.

and yet again......I'm the only person with reasoning. All you people do is say a score and leave. Hell, shadow of the colossus had a few problems....and pretty clunky controls (controls are a part of gameplay), it still got a dam good score...even for a gamespot score.....

It looks like fun. I have different preferences though. I don't see the excitement of a shooter, but most people do. This game does remind me of lotr, hobbit, and other great novels.

Im a bit sceptical, so im going to say high AA, but it has a chance at a low AAA score - just dont count on it too much. The main reason I say it could get AAA is because you know a good game is in the making when Julian Eggebrecht is involved.

Sounds like fanboy dribble to me. Though Lair does look interesting, I'm thinking it'll be an AA.

I love how you quote Julian Eggebrecht all the time. I'm sure the game's designer, creator and the person promoting it at this stage to the gaming press is going to give realistic updates on it. It's like asking a loving parent how his four year old son is doing at sport. It doesn't matter HOW the kid's doing, the parent's gonna be all proud and excited about it.

Shadow of Colossus was a beautiful game. Lair on the other hand looks EXTREMELY shallow. Nothing against Playstation, I wouldn't care what system this game was coming out on either way I really doubt it's going to get AAA.

Another PS3 game that tries to out do GeOW on graphics,

Over looks substance, depth, and gameplay.

Inevitably fails in every category and flops on the market.

Pre-damage control on GS's score, the only one that counts here. :lol: It looks nice, but looks can be deceiving. Lets just wait and see what happens.

Why is #9 different from everything else?

Why are you so sure that they'll  "fix" the LOTR battles for the final version?

Why is someone who disagrees on what is beatiful and what is ugly in terms of graphics a moron?

I tend to agree with you. I can't think of mythical dragon media of any sort that has really taken off and been amazing.

I stopped reading there when you used 9/11 to compare to a fictional city attacked by dragons and you mounting a dragon.

Lair is one of the few PS3 games I am looking forward to, but it seems too soon to say what you're saying here... I mean did you get this info from Factor 5?  They are going to be understandably biased.  I love their Rogue Squadron games, but no developer is perfect.  Sounds like you HOPE Lair gets AAA, because if it doesn't, then tilt will seem like a big mistake for the PS3.

im guessing 8.6. im guessing mid AA because ign has said that the tilt controls occasionally hitched. however, that could possibly be fixed in time(its still getting kinda close to the deadline though). but everything else ive heard about lair has been great.

That's it....I've give up on the 13 year olds trying to sound like they know what they are talking about, in system wars.

But, when this game get's AAA........I'll be here laughing at all of you. I've already countered the "this game's graphics look like crap" lemming posts/the "gameplay sounds shallow" posts.......if you read by post, then you know both of those things are not the case.

You comparing 9/11 to Lair?:? The city being under attack is not close to the 9/11 feeling, it more like a LOTR feeling.

I'm comparing 9/11 to the 1st mission, in the way that it's the enemy who initiates the 1st strike, and it is unexpected (in the alpha cutscene, a general says "the molokai have never attacked the city").

That's it....I've give up on the 13 year olds trying to sound like they know what they are talking about, in system wars.

But, when this game get's AAA........I'll be here laughing at all of you. I've already countered the "this game's graphics look like crap" lemming posts/the "gameplay sounds shallow" posts.......if you read by post, then you know both of those things are not the case.

I wouldnt be shocked if Lair gets AAA, but I would be a bit suprised. It looks to be a Mid-high AA. But none of this matters until the game comes out.

Ive seen this before only this time it sounded more logical and less fanboyish. well good job atleast u didnt bash a 360 game or a wii game to make a point, glad there are actually cows that can be legit. good post. and yes this should get AAA by all acounts with the way its turning out. Although i doubt its in alpha with its release in only a few months, its probably on its beta or whatever. the graphics do look awesome, and yes they will look better knowing factor 5. Gears level no, i doubt that, great Heck Yeah. Factor 5 made great games in the rogue squadron series. and will do the same with Lair. Im a lemming who doesnt own a PS3, but i do know what a good developer is. Factor 5 is good if not great.

I'm comparing 9/11 to the 1st mission, in the way that it's the enemy who initiates the 1st strike, and it is unexpected (in the alpha cutscene, a general says "the molokai have never attacked the city").

Why hasn't people given solid critical reasons? Simple--no one's actually played it yet! In fact, outside of Sony-loyal parties, no one has. But considering what happened to Motorstorm, another Sony-owned property that was being touted to death, and considering that in the six months since the PS3's launch, it's only AAA has been a third-party game (and a year-old port of a 9.6 game), it's safe to say that Sony's projects are not being viewed with a lot of confidence. What most true critics are waiting on is an independent hands-on or, better yet, a playable demo.

yeah that was overdone. next time make a different analogy. thats an analogy that doesnt ever need to be made with a videogame.

wow...the president of factor 5 made that analogy....jack thompson didn't get all POED about it and go on his usual rampage (but then again....he was on fox news with yesterday's incidient, he was even called a "school shooting expert"). And 8 minutes into the interview....he blames GTA/manhunt/DOOM/video games in general/grindhouse/the media....

why do people always scapegoat the media? Why not actually face the problem, instead of avoiding it!!!!
