I see people bashing Nintendo retreating from the nostalgia argument and now using "it's the same damn game from the 80's and 90's" argument. They always want to cry and scream for BIG changes notably something that breaks the formula. I ask the question, why do you want that? what kind of formula breaking idea do you have that is truly beneficial in the eyes of a game designer? Have you heard of C&C4?

Why do you want the formula to be heavily changed in the first place? You want Zelda to become like an WRPG? Why don't you just play Skyrim or Mass Effect then? You want Mario to wield a gun instead of just jumping around, knocking off enemies, and getting power-ups? Why don't you just play MW3? You want Samus Aran to just kick ass and forget about the puzzles and isolation blah blah blah? Why don't you just play Halo?

Seriously, wanting Mario and Zelda to change is like wanting Starcraft to become like Dawn of War or wanting Diablo 3 to become like Skyrim. It is preposterous. Blizzard's games don't heavily change their formula. It is the polish and refinement of their formula that make their games truly great. Same goes for Nintendo. Blizzard makes changes similar to how Nintendo makes changes to their games.

I will anticipate the response "But Blizzard takes a very long time to release their games" which implies that the fault lies to Nintendo releasing their games too often but that is silly. Mario console platformers don't release that often especially Zelda console games. Handhelds on the other hand well i thought handhelds don't matter here in SW it only matters in Japan? Besides, PH and ST pay homage to WW a last gen game and SM3DL is very different from SMG and is more pick up and play style handheld focused game.

The point is people mostly outside from SW, enjoy Nintendo's games and create great experiences resulting to high sales. It would be stupid for Nintendo to stop or slow down releasing games to cater to SW majority getting tired of their franchises.

Nintendo and Blizzard will change their games, it'll just take them longer. The same way everything they do is slower. The benefit is, the end result will be much better than anything else out there. The same way their products are now.

Sorry. Nintendo s a company that has ran out of ides when it comes to gameplay and are tech-retarded these days. I admit some of the Wii games are great. But compared to what is on other systems? I would play the games on the other system every time.

I'm sorry but there are people who praise the wii as if it was the god of all machines. I have no issue with the formulas they use, some people just aren't into that type of formula you know? Its not their fault. I think what people are trying to get at is that they really, really, really, really, need a standard for decent third party games.

Good points TC.

Mario Galaxy is a good example of this. Completely pushing the platforming genre. And they keep pushing with clever gameplay design. Same thing can be said for Zelda. Some of those dungeons are amazing (e.g the last one with the rotating rooms).

do you enjoy Nintendo games? play them and don't listen to the others, who probably have other tastes or like trolling or they're just kids who think that they must shoot and kill in order to be men.

Care to mention any company with "Fresh" ideas when it comes to gameplay?

You mean like Mirror's Edge being an all-first person game and doing it right or Assassin's Creed and it's control?? How about Blazblue- No fighter plays like it. It is completely unique. Looks at Kinect....several games right there. Crysis- A fps where you have total freedom plus the suit- All unique. X'Plosion man and Little Big Planet. Both unique as was Limbo and Braid. Some of these are $10 games and they beat Nintendo at their own game. Gears? Not completely a new game type but they made it playable and with additions like horde mode and the roadie run....pretty unique. Left 4 Dead- Hey co-op done right.......Look at Portal? Both different. Want me to go on? Look! Mario has to kidnap that stupid bitc# because she has not learned to stay in the house. Look! Link wakes up in his PJ's and gets asked to go on an adventure....time to train! Hey Mario Kart-.....ect.

Hmmm... lol you have to use numerous companies' games including indie ones to compete one company that's Nintendo. lol you really expect one company which is Nintendo to have more original, innovative, and unique games than many companies including indie ones? I see desperation here to attack Nintendo. Choose one company to compete with Nintendo and we'll see.

From Nintendo

Pushmo

A unique puzzle game. Simple yet complex. Addictive. Just $6. You can create your own puzzle and share.

Super Mario Galaxy games

Since GS' scores is considered holy here in SW do you know why the 1st was GOTY 2007 over Crysis and many other games of that year and why the 2nd got a 10 despite its similarity? SMG perfected the platformer genre with gravity bending mechanics which you can't find on any other 3d platformer.

Zelda: Skyward Sword

I'm still playing it but i have come across a unique mechanic. Many games have utilized the time traveling mechanic but time stones in SS was a great idea letting you see the past only for a limited range. You can traverse between past and present seamlessly. The game may be formulaic which is really the main reason why it got 7.5 in GS but it still has great design resulting to high ratings aside from GS.

Metroid: Other M

Ironically, this game is criticized for not being similar to other Metroid games and many people claim Shadow complex is a better Metroid game. Hypocrites they are, since haters wanted something different from Nintendo and when this game came out, they lambast it for not being similar to other Metroid games. The game fused 2D and 3D perspective using a control scheme akin to the NES and it still managed to be fun which is why it still got 8.5 here in GS.

Xenoblade

Wait til it gets in NA and you'll know why some consider it the JRPG of the generation.

Blazblue is a poor man's Guilty Gear (look it up, it's even made by the same people) and Crysis is just the natural evolution of Far Cry. I'll give you some of the others, but I disagree on Limbo and Braid. They're just 2D platformers with twists. Gears is not unique, and it didn't invent Horde mode, either. Neither is Left 4 Dead.

Not releasing that often has nothing to do with what I said. It's about the sheer number of titles that are similar, all of the console zeldas from the 64 onward play like OOT with a twist (sailing, wolf) save SS which plays like OOT but has a bit more (such as directional attacks) added to it and all the handheld titles play like LTTP, again with their own twists. At the end of the day though the core formula fails to move forward or make any notable changes and it begins to feel like a "I played this before" type of deal, like COD.

You still didn't answer my main post. What kind of formula breaking idea do you have that is truly beneficial in the eyes of a game designer? Have you heard of C&C4? Why do you want the formula to be heavily changed in the first place? You want Zelda to become like an WRPG? You want Zelda to have some kind of loot whenever monsters die similar to Diablo? You want the game to have choices that have consequences like in The Witcher? Why then should you play Zelda in the first place if you want to play a game that isn't Zelda (puzzle solving)?

How about a bit more depth to the combat? (some different weapons, make side weapons much less situational etc)

I'm asking for formula breaking ideas to people like you who complain that it's the same damn game from the 90's. Since you said they haven't added enough, I ask what should they add more and you just pointed a bit more depth to the combat which is silly. Is that all you can come up with? I seriously thought that people whining that Nintendo games haven't changed, have their own ideas of making the franchise better and fresher.

They are similar in that they are making consistent quality games and don't care what the haters think.

Except you know, blizzard doesn't have 10 iterations + of warcraft or diablo like zelda and mario does.

because blizzard is infinitely smaller than nintendo. if they weren't, you can bet you'd see diablo and starcraft more often. oh and aren't we on the 4th WoW expansion or so?

I'm asking for formula breaking ideas to people like you who complain that it's the same damn game from the 90's. Since you said they haven't added enough, I ask what should they add more and you just pointed a bit more depth to the combat which is silly. Is that all you can come up with? I seriously thought that people whining that Nintendo games haven't changed, have their own ideas of making the franchise better and fresher.lordlors

Really? I'm not asking them to throw the whole damn formula out the window, I'm asking them to improve on the formula in a noticeable way. Zelda in its current state is the same as COD except COD gets infinitely more hate.

Yeah we are, I don't see your point about that though but the game changed a fair amount with each expansion up to WOTLK. Secondly blizzard's size may have something to do with it, but at this point it doesn't matter, the reality of the situation is there are more zelda and mario games on the market by a mile compared to blizzard games.

It's the fact that you and otheres believe SM3DL i all of a sudden a different game from past Mario games. There is barely any new gameplay elements in the game enough to changethe fact that I already played this game. It's like after NewSMBwii and DS are criticized, the change the camera angles and all of a sudden this is a new game that doesn't try to recapture anything. Wait? What? Yes it does, its the same 3D Mario with a 3D gimmick on and the camera angles changed. I mean really/ I have heard from people the game is this awesome unique experience that was never seen before. I mean I am not saying Mario games suck but come on, let's be reasonable. It almost makes me like Tom more.

Care to mention any company with "Fresh" ideas when it comes to gameplay?

lordlors

Pushmo: Debatable SMH Games: There s nothing unique about the series. It did not edefine platforming and it did nothing someone else didn;t do. Just not this gen filled with shooters which contributed to both games scores. Not saying the games are bad but come on, replace mario with anyone and bam it's score is dropped. Zelda: You said its unique then say it was used many times before which is a failure implosion. Xenoblade: Came out in a time where Jrpgs are not doing well, and thus usese a barely changed older formual with some enhancements to play safe, it works, slap nintendo, and now it's the best Jrpg this gen despite it barely doing anything game changing? Almost as hypocritical as the Jrpgs fans saying console Jrpgs are bad but Portable ones aren't. Really? The same repetitive formula you guys are complaining about on consoles with few exceptions, are all over handhelds. wtf?
