I've actually never played Max Payne. Don't really want to either.

It's a sick game with memorable writing and fun gameplay. Worth playing for sure just for the experience of getting to know the character of Max Payne. The ports suck ass, but the PC version is top notch. Max Payne 2 improves the graphics and the fluidity of the gameplay, but the first one is definitely a must play as well.

I strongly recommend against playing these games with a gamepad though, the ports suck ass mainly because the controls don't translate well due to the nature of these games. They're not cover shooters, they're twitchy PC shooters designed for mouse precision.

Just thinking about these games makes me want to replay them. Maybe i should do a Max Payne marathon..

Yeah, I know it's good and I thought it looked cool back when it was released. I lied come to think of it - I have played quite a bit of it at a friends house and enjoyed it. Never got the game myself back then and played it for reals though, and now it's pretty old and junk and there's lots of other shit I'd rather play. Not saying I'm against playing it, but I probably wont for a long time, if at all. If I did, I sure as hell wouldn't play it with a gamepad. Not a fan of hampering myself like that.

I did one before the release of Max Payne 3

Totally recommend it. If you loved the games at first, you can totally look past the aged graphics of number one, the gameplay remains a blas tthis day.

And when it comes to its shoot dodge mechanics, I think Max Payne's gameplay is bar none.

Old graphics never bother me tbh, i never got that "hurt my eyes" bullshit. It's like people jump blind without knowing wen the game released or on what hardware specifications it was designed for. I just appreciate graphics based on the time and system they were built for. People are fine with shitty, abysmal resolutions on the 3DS, and 2017 indie games that look like ass, yet bitch about old graphics. Hah, but we're only human, so whatever.

They're games, they might as well be ASCII graphics for all i care. I don't look at chess pieces on a board sculpted a thousand years ago and call that game "ugly". Those are the tools the person that made the game had at his disposal, and if he did the best he could with them tools, i can totally appreciate that.

I find it more forgiving if it's old graphics on a game you just to enjoy back in the days. Because you know damn well what the game looked back then, and you never expect something better.

But say I never played Ocorina of Time, and going back to this really old game that I never played, and never had any love for, I find it hard to appreciate such graphics :)

@ghosts4ever: mass effect, the Witcher, tomb raider reboot and grand theft auto all better 3rd person.

Also doom 2016 and prey suck.

Depends on what the game is trying to achieve. Usually 2D games age better as hardware accommodated it. Almost all PS1/Saturn 3D titles mostly look like like a plane crash. PS2/Xbox and PC games fair better.

@ConanTheStoner: The funniest thing is one of the main things we were taught in combat training is taking cover, using cover. It's actually fundamental to firefights.

Man, I thought adding Wall Cover from Gears of War was a HUGE step in Third Person shooter games. There just wasn't anything like it.

Never played the Max Payne series or Mafia. I just assumed Mafia was a cash grab at the GTA series and Max Payne was trying to make the Matrix a Video game.

The only thing correct in OP is that Quantum Break is a better shooter than Gears 4.

Yeah this looks great to me:

This does not:

If I disliked as many games as you I wouldn't waste my time with this hobby. What's the point if you only have a handful of games you like out of the millions available? Buy a fishing pole and tackle box, dude.

There's a lot to graphics in a video game. The thing with Ocarina of Time is that it ran at 22 FPS in a 320 x 240 resolution. Which is sluggish as all hell, and that resolution combined with the N64's typical texture quality.. damn. That's what gets most, if not all people. Me included, i can't stand a low framerate which leads to sluggish controls.

But then i go to Panzer Dragoon Zwei, a SEGA Saturn game. 640 x 224 resolution, locked 30 FPS, motherfucking widescreen support. Looks fantastic on a CRT, mostly thanks to its brilliant artstyle (which is a vital thing for 5th gen games; if it didn't have an appealing artstyle, it's not gonna have any visual appeal because of the hardware it's on) and plays flawlessly. Panzer Dragoon series is one of my favorites.

But play Daytona USA. 60 FPS, released in 1994. I guarantee that video game is mad enjoyable, because of fantastic controls and fun gameplay.

Hmmmm yes, maybe flying games just fare way better ?

I mean I still like how this game looks too:

And there was this one game I used to play all the time: Swift 3D, it had you controlling a tank and a helicopter, looked absolutely brilliant on PC.

Games that were set on the ground i.e. no flying like Zelda or Mario 64 have aged really bad.

Loved those games. But I prefer gameplay of Max Payne 2. I think it was tuned better. However, I like slow motion of first one more. But then again, second one is more fast paced, so may be it was wise to use different sort of bullet time.

Max payne 2 imo absolutely suck compare to original game and it was dissapointing sequel.

in max payne 2, Max looks generic. Sam lake model was much better

MP1 was more darker

MP1 story was iconic compare to how terrible and generic MP2 story is. even they drag the love interest nonsense. Max lost his family. he dont need another love interest. he is undercover cop who is revengeful

MP2 is incredibly easy, MP1 was hard. I died very few times in MP2. its bulletime suck. MP1 bulletime where you gain by killing enemies was better.

all in all. it was weaker sequel and commercial faliure.

MP1 >>>>>>>> MP3 >> MP2

Payne 2 is easily worst in series.

Max payne 1, was like amnesia with matrix, with alan wake, with cool gunplay ( slowmotion killing people was awsome ) physx from what i remember and nice visuals all around. It was the goat game. Specially in a area where everybody wanted matrix games. Story was also great.

Max payne 2, i can't even remember it anymore. So there's that. max payne 3 is more recent and i played it, didn't bother to finish it to the end. it felt like a dull shooter that was nothing like the first game. Couldn't care about the story in it also.

Mafia was a powerhouse visually in comparison towards GTA. sure it was a new take on gta, but it was absolute not a terrible effort. The fibe the tires that could be shot. You had all kinds of stuff like shooting in windows that wasn't before done on any decent level. It nuked my 4200 ti to its limits. Game was amazing, acting was great, visuals etc. Really nice well done game.

Mafia 2 however was nothing but a cash grab and mafia 3 was nothing more then a political correct attempt to get more attention towards the series. But the game fell flat on gameplay, story after you played for longer then 2 hours.

Sure mafia 1 had the same issue's with the car race that simple was impossible to beat, but in that area stuff like that was happening in every game. So more acceptable.

Max payne 1 came out on the right moment, in the right time. Same goes for mafia 1. The sequels however just felt dissapointing entirely to the point the IP's are no longer interesting.

max payne 2 did to max payne 1 what deus ex 2 did to original. i never understand why people like it. it was too short and not as intense as original game.

people complain about how max look terrible in original but when i think of max. i only think of sam lake in leather jacket. he looks really cool in comic cutscenes.

Well yes, video games are full of gruff alpha males bordering on interchangeable, and here we have a gollum looking lanky fellow with much of the comic panels clearly staff members doing amateur dramatics. There's an intimate charm to it.
