today i think i discovered why PSP software sales suck. its the UMD. no, theres nothing wrong with it, but its too good. i realized that the only game i have bought new for PSP was Portable Ops because i couldnt wait to play it. but every other game i have bought used. why you ask? because the UMD plastic cover thing prevents the game from being scratched or damaged (much). so buying used is like buying new! oh yeah, the fact that there are only a handful of good games helps too...

I don't know if piracy is that widespread on the PSP. There is a lot of it, but look at the PS2. It was an epidemic then. Now if Sony could figure out how to stop ripped UMD games from running, but still allow homebrew...

Piracy is MUCH easier on DS than PSP and its not doing anything to hurt the DS. Its because people on the go arent looking for a full console expierience. PSP offers "sit down and play for hours" type games and DS offers "10 minute bus ride" games. DS is simply better at doing what people want handhelds to do.

it's just a really crap handheld

the janky hardware and library of watered down PS2 ports make it useless as a handheld games machine so people are forceed to use it as a poor mans ipod. that's all there is to it

no body agrees with me? because i know that you would have to be a complete dolt to scratch a UMD, why would i pay $50 Canadian when at EB or other used game stores i can get it for less that $20 in near perfect condition? i know piracy has been an issue, but most people that own PSPs, not to offend u hardcore owners here, are the noobs who bought it just to play GTA on the bus or at school. if u disagree then you are more blind than i thought...

Who says that handheld games have to be so radically different than console games?

The Gameboy Advance was full of games that were basically the same games available on 16-Bit consoles. And I mean the same. But I don't remember anyone calling those titles watered down Super Nintendo ports. So now that the new Nintendo handheld is different, the sheep are quick to bash the PSP for featuring games that are similar to console games.

I, for one, will not be corraled into the mindset that what games I take with me on the go have to be a different experience then what I play on consoles. **** that, that's what defines the term 'sheep'.

Are you kidding? I have 15 DS games on a 1 gig SD micro card and with an accessory i bought on EBAY for 25 dollars, I can put the SD micro card in the DS and play the games perfectly with absolutely no modification to the DS at all. With PSP you have to downgrade firmware, use E-loaders and all sorts of ridiculous crap.

There are lot of sites to get pirate PSP games from the web,I dont use it but ask the people in Qj.net,they can inform you better than me about it.

You can get DS games from the web too. Whats your point? All I said was that DS is easier. Its literally a 5 minute operation. The games are about 60 mb as opposed to an entire UMD disk and there is no risk of bricking the DS with eloaders and downgraders.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the DS has exclusive original games as well. Not many people are dumb enough to pay again for watered down PS2 games they already own. Whereas with the DS you're generally getting something you couldn't get on other machines

You're less likely to pirate something if you feel it is worth the money, and the majority of the titles on the PSP are rubbish so not many people think it's worth the money. It's sad but true

Well and a lot has to do with the price. Some PSP games are 45 dollars IIRC. Thats just ridiculous for a portable game. Like I said in my original post, people who play handhelds arent generally looking for a console-level experience. They want quick, fun, different games than what they are used to on the big TV.

A GOOD EXAMPLE.

i was looking to get Metal Gear Ac!d for my PSP. it was still $40 though and i have heard mixed things about it so i went to EB and got it for $15. i open it up. BAM the case was fine, the instruction manual intact, and i looked at the UMD disk, it was a little scratched but it was on the plastic so it didnt affect it at all. i could have turned around and sold it on eBay for $25 easily. but i kinda like the game (huge Metal Gear Nerd) so i want to beat it a few times. so what is my incentive to buy this game new? it isnt in better condition. it sure as hell isnt cheaper. but i also have a conscience and a soul. so i would not steal somebodys hard work (the good fellows at Konami) by pirating which could also harm my PSP, which i want to sell soon so i can get PSP lite.

It wouldn't matter so much if they were worth it, but the games are just ports that already can already play on the PS2. And they're not even the best games from the PS2 like this trash

That's why the games sell so poorly, even the 12 year olds "Gangstas" who own the PSP aren't going to pay 45 bucks for that rubbish, and the poor little kids aren't smart enough to realise how much better the DS is.

yeah umm i dunno what kinda of stuff the ds cna do other than pirate ds games, but on my psp, i have a gba, gbc, N64, sega master, sega genesis, sega saturn, NES, SNES(yes all of the super mario games!), PS1 games!!!(FFVII!!!!!) of course psp games, and a hand full of apps, including a pdf reader which has WHOLE book series in it, and of course my umd dumper for the few umd games that i rent. msot psp games i get in a..more efficient way... and of course it has music and movies which can play on it. For example of using my psp, Since i'm a FFVII fan, i was able to put every FFVII compilation thing on it, Except for FFVII dirgeof cerberus, but i have it for the PS2 =) I found a webstie that had all of the eps, ofr Before Crisis, i'm gonna buy crisis core, i have last order vid, FFVII original, and the FFVII advent children vid. The psp is completely satisfying me =)

Buying used isn't at all equivalent to software piracy from a moral standpoint, but it doesn't support the publisher at all.

Banhammer3000

Or thats an excuse. Piracy is one of the reasons the PS1 did so well, people could easily get copied games working, but it didn't stop them getting proper games as well.

Maybe if prices were less and felt worth it it may also help. Its undenieble also that the PSP needs far more suitible software, for portable use. Either way you can't blame all poor software on piracy because thats like saying everyone does it and the majority highly likely doesn't.

Completely agree. I'll add; I think that the DS offers more original games too.
