Sure, there are a lot of non-traditional gamers playing the Wii. But it's hard to fathom that these are the ones actually buying out the system. Most Wii's are gone as soon as the store gets them. This was universally true closer to launch day, and is still widely a true statement. To suggest that casuals are the ones lining up at midnight to get something they don't even know if they want is ridiculous.

It seems logical to me that the systems are largely being bought by traditional, hardcore gamers who genuinely like Nintendo products. The only place "casual" comes in is when mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, or sister come in and see Mr./Ms. Hardcore and Traditional waving their arms around to play a game and think, "Hey, that's pretty cool!"

Maybe when Wii actually stays in stock, a large number of casuals will boost sales, but considering it is still such a commodity, I think it is ridiculous to suggest at this point.

That's a silly statement. Every talks on the phone and listens to music. Or are you a member of a group of hardcore phone talkers?

The vast majority of lines I've seen are the hardcore types. There were a few "family" types, but I'm sure they couldn't be called casuals. Young doesn't always mean casual.

Come on, guys, this is a message board. Not a "make random, unsupported statements and pretend they are factual" board.

just because everyone talks on the phone doesn't mean everyone will buy a $600 one. and there are ppl that are obsessed with getting the newest phones but they aren't the only ones that wanted an iphone the first day.

A store around here got their hands on a Wii and are selling it for 500 bucks because the manager won it at an auction price. It's been there for a week. Slowest-selling Wii ever

Still, comparing the iPhone to the Wii is very farfetched. The same types that would go after the iPhone sound like the types who would shell out $600 for a PS3. And you still haven't really made any point as to what made certain buyers of the iPhone "casuals". I'm a very casual phone talker, and the free Nokia I got from Alltel is just fine with me.

Look, techno geeks will want something that is technological more advance than what acasual consumer wants!!! The casual consumer will probrably want something that is cheap and something that what everyone wants!!! Just how the Razor was popular, but there were better phones than the razor in the market!!!

i don't think anyone knows if the majority is. I think it's easy to guess that the percent will be more than on the ps3 and 360. the wii is the most popular every month for like 7 months now. you don't get that way on hardcore alone. there would have to be many casuals/nongamers getting the system too.

I'm not done yet, look at my message about phones!!! What am I trying to state is that Casuals want something that looks stylish, something that is easy to use, something that is cheap to buy, and something that everyone wants!!! The Wii has what made the iPod popular and made the Razor popular as well even though they are different!!!

iPhone looks to have the casuals but it has flaws to it!!! It maybe stylish but the casuals may have problems learning the features (despite the commercials) and the price factor is the cause that may make the casuals turn away from the phone!!! The but to make it clear, the Wii is more of a Razor than the iPhone!!!

I re-read your post, I do agree the fact that the iphone and wii comparison is far'dfetch!!

Sure, there are a lot of non-traditional gamers playing the Wii. But it's hard to fathom that these are the ones actually buying out the system. Most Wii's are gone as soon as the store gets them. Well, initially, the lines were probably a majority of true N gamers waiting for the next system to come out...HOWEVER, to be this far into the release of the console and still have lines in places and to have the system being bought up as soon as it hits shelves, that in itself proves that the casuals have seen the wii in action and are buying them as fast as they currently are selling. There are alot more casuals out there in comparison to 'hardcore' gamers, so that also explains the shortage of the wii still.

Logic is a powerful thing...If its thought out.

People who tend to watch more artistic movies are more discerning not more hardcore. They probably watch LESS movies than people who watch the latest comedy or blockbuster. And of course the majority of people like to watch a variety of movies, some brainless action or comedy movies, some artistic thought provoking movies. Hardcore only refers to the amount of time spent playing game, it says nothing about the quality of the game.

For the record I am a casual player, and I got up early one Sunday morning and went with my wife to buy a Wii, who was desperate to get a Wii to play Rayman Rabbids after playing it with some friends. I am currently playing Resident Evil 4 (AAA), which will last me until a new quality title comes out, given that I only have 3 or 4 hours a week to play games.

Casuals usually dont make a lot of effort to buy an item that is hard to get. The time when the casual croud will reallyshow its effect on the salesis when there are stocks of WII on store shelfs for a longer period of time than a few days. Most nongamers dont even know that the WII exsists. I recently asked my work colleages if they had heard of the WII? Rougly 80% had not heard of it, and out of the 20% that had heard of it 3 were gamers (2 PS2 and 1 GC/DS)and 1 was a parent that was asked by one of their child for a WII for his birthday.

Well they did discover that less then 10% of Wii owners didn't own a console previously. So they aren't really tapping into the non-gamer market as they would like you to believe. Its only once a Wii is introduced into the home that mom, grandpa, and dad play it.

I have to say that I do believe that a good chunk of the Wii's are bought up by casual gamers because a lot of people in my extended family want one and most of them don't play video games or actually dislike them quite a bit (my uncle hates that one of his sons plays them a lot but he really wants to buy a Wii). I have seen many a person play the Wii I bought for my wife and then go out and try to find one even though they don't play video games too often. So yeah, there are plenty of casual gamers or even people that wouldn't be considered gamers waiting in line for a Wii or trying really hard to get one.

Just curious to where that 10% number comes from and if that's only last gen console or any console (like nes or atari).

also that 10% would be nongamers, not casuals.

Yes, "try" would be the operative word there. We're not debating whether there is a casual market. Unfortunately for them, most of the Wii's are being bought as soon as they arrive at the store by consumers who were ready and waiting. Is it fathomable that some of these are casuals who just really like the Wii? Of course, but its ludacris to think that most of them are.
