Why Saints Row was far superior than GTA 4.

Why is it, that a game with far less game play features gets rated so much higher than a game which did so much more? It seems pretty simple, if a game does more, it deserves a better score. But not in the case of GTA.

Things Saints Row had that GTA 4 didn't, or did better compared to GTA 4.

- Fully customizable characters.
In GTA 4 you had no choice over the character and customization was very limited.

- Fully customizable cars.
GTA 4 had absolutely no customization what so ever of the cars.

- The Phone works properly.
Many of the phone numbers you see in GTA 4 do absolutely nothing. For example the numbers displayed on TV commercials don't even fit into your phone, they are too long. In Saints Row you can phone buddies and have them arrive straight away to help you with anything you need.

- Gangs that actually fight each other in real time.
Not even in GTA 4.

- Better Multiplayer.
You cant create your own gang in GTA 4 and the customization of you character is still very limited. There is also no balance in the multiplayer, you can get a good gun, yet someone can kill you with a few shots of a pistol, you don't even have time to turn around.

- Better voice actors.
Sure, sometimes its good to try and get the voice that fits the part right. But the truth is, nobody cares about the voice, they care about who's voice it is. There was not even one big name actor or voice actor in GTA 4, they could have at least tried.

- Better sound track.
This one is more based on personal opinion, but at least Saints Row tried to cater for all different music groups. I never heard one song that I enjoyed a lot in GTA 4, but again that's just my personal opinion, yours may be different. But if you didn't like the songs in Saints Row, at least they added the simple function of being able to listen to your own songs from your console, and even create your own playlists.

- Better side missions and activities.
The side missions and activities on saints Row were pure fun. Enough said on that one because that may be based on personal preference as well.

- Better characters and story.
The only characters that you really have any feelings towards in GTA 4 is Niko and Roman. Saints Row has a diverse rang of characters which have great personalities. Oh and the ending of Saints Row didn't completely blow (you will know what I mean if you have seen the endings to GTA 4).

I'm not going to go on forever about what things SR does better than GTA 4 because I'm sure those who have played both games know about them already. But to be fair here are some things that GTA 4 did better than Saints Row.

- Better Physic.

- Better Graphics. The graphics weren't that much better but the dynamic wet surfaces were cool.

- Helicopters and Motorbikes.

That's it.

So my only conclusion is that GTA 4 got a better score because...its a GTA. The reason that GTA 4 got a better score is probably more or so based on psychology, and not the simple system of rating something based on what it's worth.

I like that it's simple... less is more in this case.

I would have hated to see the gang system return, especially. A lot of those others in the list are useless as well. Except for the planes, I wish there was planes in GTAIV.

Honestly, I think you have bad taste.

You lose all your credibility when you say that Saint's Row had a better story and soundtrack. Saint's Row might have had good gameplay, but its presentation is tacky.

Saints Row is like soda while GTA 4 is like wine.

Also, Liberty City beats the crap out of whatever lame city is in SR.

Why anyone would want a create your own character for GTA IV is beyond my comprehension. I could see that wish in the past games because they were flat , generic looking characters without much personality ..... but GTA IV ?

Does anybody else notice that the TC judges the voice acting (which the reviews said was superb) off of whether the voice actors are big name or not? What does them being big name have to do with it, being well known has nothing to do with talent.

That further puts a hole in his credibility.

If you go through his list of so-called reasons, most of them are quite shallow.

That said, I can respect Saint's Row more for at least attempting to move the genre forward. Rockstar took their same product and polished it to a blinding shine....but it's basically the same thing (even less so if you compare it to SA) they've been releasing since the original GTA3.

Saint's Row was always too goofy looking for me. From the lame art style to the awkward way your character runs and shoots. I just couldnt take the game seriously.

I do wish GTA4 had more features like SA or Saint's Row, but it's a grat game that does everything it's supposed to do better than any game before it. Tad overrated, yes....but still great. And miles better than Saint's Row

Ugh. Saints Row was probably the worst GTA clone ever. Seriously the game tried way to hard. Radio was crap, AI was about as smart as a bag of rocks, Story was nothing compared to Vice city, SA and GTA IV and the whole Gangster crap made me vomit.

SA used ghetto/gangsters as well, but at least it had a great story.

Thats a valid complain to me. In fact, it's my biggest complaint and it's something that 99% ofo the reviewers failed to mention. The best part about SA, once the story was finished, was seeing your influence on the game and the world. CJ got bigger and more fit, the grove street homies started taking over enemy territory, you had luxury safe houses all over san andreas. it was great. That is also one of the things Sain't row got right.

GTA4 is much more static and it annoys me. The whole theme is Nico's rise from the slums but you don't really get to see any of that outside of the story cutscenes. You can't buy property, save cars in a big lot, influence gangsters or any of that. You can't do much of anything once the story is over besides keep your relationships at 100% and kill cops. Pretty sad end to an otherwise stellar game

Personal preference isn't what I was getting at. I was pointing out that I think its stupid that games are rated based on the series and not the content. Saints Row uses Havok, GTA 4 and the new star wars game uses Euphoria (or how ever its spelt).

I think Saints Row was a great game and people foolishly judge it before trying it. The only reason it did not get a better score IMO is because most people just considered it a GTA clone. Then people should consider GTA a Elder Scrolls clone with gang members also. Since GTA is not the first sandbox game which many think it is. Not being the first is not bad. No reason to call KZ2 or Halo3 a Castle Wolfenstein clone. Saints Row does not get the credit it deserves.Eltroz

Seem pretty much like all the other ones. Some guy rises up from being a nobody to being a manic who just wants to kill people for money, then eventually reaches the top. Oh and the endings to GTA 4 completely blowed. They were nowhere near as epic as they should and could have been.

I thought the first three GTA's were rather cartoony and over the top, but anyway...there's a huge difference between adopting a few features and stealing a game's entire structure and then adding insult to injury by trying to duplicate the game's little quirks.

When I heard Saint's Rows radio advertisements, I was stunned by how lame they were.

The R* guys strike me as being alot more intelligent than the Volition guys.

I agree with a lot of those. Man just doing the drug runs alone in Saints Row was more fun than any mission I had in GTA4.

Saints Row is a very well made game. But people don't give it credit because they dont like the art style or humor in it.

there is so manyt things wrong with what the TC said i dont even feel like typing it all. ill just do 2. Why do you want coustmizable cars so bad?? so you can drive out smash it up then just jack someone elese?? its pretty much a useless feature. There are also A TON of radio DJs in GTA IV that are celebrities. Juliette Lewis, Iggy Pop, Sir mix-a-lot, Patrice Oneal. There is more to thats only a few.
