I agree with most of your points SR has a vastly better combat engine, other than that I think the storyline is better in GTA and that the GTA multiplayer is also better than sr's.

I turned off the lock-on but it seems like GTA almost requires it to overcome the clunkyness so I turned it back on after a few tries without it.

I was getting headshots left and right while in a car in SR but in GTA it's all spray and pray from the cars, bummer.

there is so manyt things wrong with what the TC said i dont even feel like typing it all. ill just do 2. Why do you want coustmizable cars so bad?? so you can drive out smash it up then just jack someone elese?? its pretty much a useless feature. There are also A TON of radio DJs in GTA IV that are celebrities. Juliette Lewis, Iggy Pop, Sir mix-a-lot, Patrice Oneal. There is more to thats only a few.

Edit: I cant beleive you wrote the characters and story where better in saints row... wow

Once you customize a car you put it in the garage and it is always avalible even if you trash it during a mission. They respawn in your garage. The car customization was a blast in SR. I had a ton of specialized cars to use for different mission types.

You should play it sometime and see why people like SR so much.

Btw, the TC left out how much better the map checkpoints worked in SR. In SR when you alterted your path the update on the driving line changed instantly, in GTA it felt like it took way to much time to recalculate a new path.

Not too big a deal really but it was something that mos def worked better in SR.

Lucas_kelly you are the man. However Saints Row was a 360 exclusive, so why you put this in System Wars I don't get. You are just going to get PS3 loyalists unfairly defending GTA.

Saints Row was a better game to me than GTA. GTA is pathetically shallow, I can count the decent cars on 1 hand...the amount of weapons is sad. Customization options like Clothes/Cars is utterly stupid.

I have a million dollars and I can't even buy a damn Mansion and Garage...In fact the only things I can buy are,

Ugly clothes
Rpgs/Grenades
Hot Dogs
Tolls

I'm pretty disappointed, after beating it GTA has close to no replay value, for a sandbox that's pathetic...Oblivion can last you 200+ hours, GTA4 got me maybe 40, tops.

GTA got a perfect 10 to complete the fairy tale story. San Andreas came soooooo close, 9.9 on IGN. Now with EA buying them out, magically their final efforts were "perfect" It's not a 10 to me, and I almost guarantee it wont be GoTY like everyone keeps saying.

- Better voice actors.
Sure, sometimes its good to try and get the voice that fits the part right. But the truth is, nobody cares about the voice, they care about who's voice it is. There was not even one big name actor or voice actor in GTA 4, they could have at least tried.

lucas_kelly

oh please the series is well known for having famous talent starring in their games. Houser said he was sick of them reading their lines in such a wooden way so he decided to drop them in favour of people who actually wanted to have the part.

Voice acting is actually one of the few places I'd pick GTA4 over Saints Row. I made a Rasta Jamaican, he sounds like a white guy when he talks. It's annoying.

No sense of acomplishment. What am I supposed to with all my money? There are so many more thigns right now in my mind that I dislike about GTAIV. I won't bother writing it all up though. I will just get flamed anyways.

PullTheTricker
Like there is much of one in GTA4? The lack of properties and the easy of money in GTA4 ultimately makes gathering money extremely easy. By the end of the game I had over a million with no deminishing returns. Especially since you don't lose your guns after you die. I would only occasionally buy some body armor here and there.

Why is it, that a game with far less game play features gets rated so much higher than a game which did so much more? It seems pretty simple, if a game does more, it deserves a better score. But not in the case of GTA.

Things Saints Row had that GTA 4 didn't, or did better compared to GTA 4.

- Fully customizable characters.
In GTA 4 you had no choice over the character and customization was very limited.I can Reeeeeaaaally live without it, and GTA's characters always fit perfectly within the context of the story.

- Fully customizable cars.
GTA 4 had absolutely no customization what so ever of the cars. I remember doing that in '04 while playing a game called GTA:San Andreas. Not much of a point in spending cash on a car that I'll crash 2 minutes later, and besides the whole city is a personal car lot.

- The Phone works properly.
Many of the phone numbers you see in GTA 4 do absolutely nothing. For example the numbers displayed on TV commercials don't even fit into your phone, they are too long. In Saints Row you can phone buddies and have them arrive straight away to help you with anything you need. I've got a phone in real life and It gets annoying, I'm not going play GTA4 and call every number I see written on the wall.

- Gangs that actually fight each other in real time.
Not even in GTA 4. There are no "gangs" in GTA4, Mafia bud. These dudes arent fighting over a block or over colors. One of the other things SR blatantly took from SA.

- Better Multiplayer.
You cant create your own gang in GTA 4 and the customization of you character is still very limited. There is also no balance in the multiplayer, you can get a good gun, yet someone can kill you with a few shots of a pistol, you don't even have time to turn around. That's debatable at this point since I remember SR's multiplayer to be atrocious. How long did anyone even play SR online?

- Better voice actors.
Sure, sometimes its good to try and get the voice that fits the part right. But the truth is, nobody cares about the voice, they care about who's voice it is. There was not even one big name actor or voice actor in GTA 4, they could have at least tried. WoW, just WOW. The Voice ACTORS in all ittereations of GTA include, Michael Madsen, Michael Rappaport, Frank Vincent, Kyle Maclachlan, Ray Liota (Main Character), William Fichtner, Tom Sizemore, Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds, Luis Guzman, Phillip Michael Thomas, Lawrence Taylor, Jenna jameson, Lee Majors, Danny Trejo, Faizon Love, Clifton Powell, Samuel L. Jackson, The Game, Ice T., Peter Fonda, Charlie Murphy, James Woods and...I think at this point you get it? There is hardly a game where you can find better voice acting in any game than a GTA game, much less GTA4.The voice acting and dialogue were downright laughable.

- Better sound track.
This one is more based on personal opinion, but at least Saints Row tried to cater for all different music groups. I never heard one song that I enjoyed a lot in GTA 4, but again that's just my personal opinion, yours may be different. But if you didn't like the songs in Saints Row, at least they added the simple function of being able to listen to your own songs from your console, and even create your own playlists. Someone pointed out the number of stations there are in GTA, and there is a genre for everyone. I don't even feel like I should comment on such a ridiculous statement, but I digress. Besides, No game has ever had, nor ever will have a better soundtrack than that of GTA:Vice City.

- Better side missions and activities.
The side missions and activities on saints Row were pure fun. Enough said on that one because that may be based on personal preference as well. No, there is not one side mission in GTA 4 where it seems like an "activity". The side missions were tied in so well to the main story that I never felt like I was stealing cars for Brucie as an activity, but as a favor beacause of how well R8 develops relationships between all their characters.

- Better characters and story.
The only characters that you really have any feelings towards in GTA 4 is Niko and Roman. Saints Row has a diverse rang of characters which have great personalities. Oh and the ending of Saints Row didn't completely blow (you will know what I mean if you have seen the endings to GTA 4). At this point I'm seriously starting to question whether or not you've ever seen, let alone played a GTA game.

I'm not going to go on forever about what things SR does better than GTA 4 because I'm sure those who have played both games know about them already. But to be fair here are some things that GTA 4 did better than Saints Row.

- Better Physic.

- Better Graphics. The graphics weren't that much better but the dynamic wet surfaces were cool.

- Helicopters and Motorbikes.

That's it.

So my only conclusion is that GTA 4 got a better score because...its a GTA. The reason that GTA 4 got a better score is probably more or so based on psychology, and not the simple system of rating something based on what it's worth.

lucas_kelly
Saint's Row is one of the corniest games I have ever played in my life, and yes I said corny. After that first speech that dude gave about MuthaF*&&'s and N&%$^as, I was stunned at how generic it felt. San Andreas did the gangster thing much better, and atleast made it feel authentic, whereas SR was kind of like.....trying to be generic thugs, doing super generic thug things and sounding like super generic thugs while doing it. People go on about the planes that SR2 will feature, but I remember flyin planes through Vice City...Back in 2002, and again in '04's SA. SR is a blatant ripoff of GTA, and GTA is everything that Saint's Row wishes it could be.

Wow, just wow. :|

I mean, I know opinions supposedly can't be wrong, but TC, what you just said is probably as close to being wrong as an opinion can be.

To show you what I mean, I will now dissect your post, piece by piece:

__________________________________________________________

Things Saints Row had that GTA 4 didn't, or did better compared to GTA 4.

- Fully customizable characters.
In GTA 4 you had no choice over the character and customization was very limited.

How are customizable characters an advantage? What the hell is wrong with having a fixed character, especially one as awesome as Niko?

- Fully customizable cars.
GTA 4 had absolutely no customization what so ever of the cars.

This was one of my only real problems with GTA 4. Not sure why the took it out. This is the only real plus that SR has.

- The Phone works properly.
Many of the phone numbers you see in GTA 4 do absolutely nothing. For example the numbers displayed on TV commercials don't even fit into your phone, they are too long. In Saints Row you can phone buddies and have them arrive straight away to help you with anything you need.

The phone works fine in GTA 4. Every number I've seen/heard and then dialed, worked perfectly.

- Gangs that actually fight each other in real time.
Not even in GTA 4.

Yeah, because it woudn't fit the tone of the game. GTA 4 isn't so much about gangs, and big urban conflicts. It's much more focused.

- Better Multiplayer.
You cant create your own gang in GTA 4 and the customization of you character is still very limited. There is also no balance in the multiplayer, you can get a good gun, yet someone can kill you with a few shots of a pistol, you don't even have time to turn around.

I'm sorry, having rampaged around Liberty City with a posse of 15 of my homies on mortorbikes, I have to respectfully disagree. GTA 4's MP is alot more fun and open than Saints Row's MP.

- Better voice actors.
Sure, sometimes its good to try and get the voice that fits the part right. But the truth is, nobody cares about the voice, they care about who's voice it is. There was not even one big name actor or voice actor in GTA 4, they could have at least tried.

Big name =/= good. The voice acting in GTA 4 is excellent.

GTA 4 has an incredible soundtrack. If you preferred SR's more then OK, but...

- Better side missions and activities.
The side missions and activities on saints Row were pure fun. Enough said on that one because that may be based on personal preference as well.

I thought the side content in GTA 4 was fun as well, but let's get real: GTA 4 was all about the central story, which was awesome and expansive. Much better/bigger than all the stuff in SR combined.

Are you kidding me? The characters in SR were a bunch of stupid, annoying, wanksters. The "disneyfied gangsta" feel of the game permeated the entirety of the experience; it was filled with an atmosphere of stupidity and unfunny attamepts at humor via lame sexual jokes. It was simply pathetic. As much as I disagree with your other points, how you can even consider this one to be true is beyond me.

I'm not going to go on forever about what things SR does better than GTA 4 because I'm sure those who have played both games know about them already. But to be fair here are some things that GTA 4 did better than Saints Row.

- Better Physic.

- Better Graphics. The graphics weren't that much better
(yes, they were) but the dynamic wet surfaces were cool.

- Helicopters and Motorbikes.

That's it.

I can agree with that, I thought overall GTA was better but the combat in SR was way more fun to me. Being able to get headshots and one hit kills while driving as opposed to the spray and pray in GTA alone made the combat mechanics better imo.

I haven't actually played Saints Row but your arguments about the Voice acting is just stupid. It doesn't matter who's voice it is, it only matters if the voice fits the character and is well acted. Ron Pearlman did a voice in Turok and it was so ridiculously bad, some of the worst voice acting I've heard in many years.

In GTA 4 you had no choice over the character and customization was very limited. I agree with this.

- Fully customizable cars.
GTA 4 had absolutely no customization what so ever of the cars. Agree again.

- The Phone works properly.
Many of the phone numbers you see in GTA 4 do absolutely nothing. For example the numbers displayed on TV commercials don't even fit into your phone, they are too long. In Saints Row you can phone buddies and have them arrive straight away to help you with anything you need. This is just nit-picking but I guess you're right, in SR you could call any number you saw and you would get some funny recording, but had no impact on gameplay.

- Gangs that actually fight each other in real time.
Not even in GTA 4. SR was built around this, GTAIV wasn't, hard to compare.

- Better Multiplayer.
You cant create your own gang in GTA 4 and the customization of you character is still very limited. There is also no balance in the multiplayer, you can get a good gun, yet someone can kill you with a few shots of a pistol, you don't even have time to turn around. Meh, didn't care for either games MP.

- Better voice actors.
Sure, sometimes its good to try and get the voice that fits the part right. But the truth is, nobody cares about the voice, they care about who's voice it is. There was not even one big name actor or voice actor in GTA 4, they could have at least tried. Definately agree with this, SR had Michael Clark Duncan, Keith David, David Carradine and Tia Carrere.

Disagree, GTA IV had a better soundtrack, IMO.

- Better side missions and activities.
The side missions and activities on saints Row were pure fun. Enough said on that one because that may be based on personal preference as well. This is a toss-up for me, I enjoyed both games side missions.

I think SR had better characters, but I liked GTA IV's story a little bit more, both were good stories though, SR had a twist at the end which I didn't see coming.

Honestly, I think you have bad taste.

You lose all your credibility when you say that Saint's Row had a better story and soundtrack. Saint's Row might have had good gameplay, but its presentation is tacky.

Saints Row is like soda while GTA 4 is like wine.

Also, Liberty City beats the crap out of whatever lame city is in SR.

To be completely Honest... I actually liked SR better than GTA VI.. Now granted, I haven't completed the game yet. However there was just something Hella fun about SR missions. The story was pretty decent and the graphics were good (not great).. I think I'm more hyped for SR2 now that I've played GTA... I personally like customized items/characters in games...

btw, the character in SR wasn't completely silent... He'd offer a few one liners here and there... It actually gave the character (IMO) more character than to be a Chatty Mary..

Thats a big one for me, I love creating a character in my own vision and using him in a game.

- Fully customizable characters.

In GTA 4 you had no choice over the character and customization was very limited.

As it's already been stated, less is more. Rockstar was intelligent to cut back on character customization features because the entire focus of the game has pivoted. Niko Bellic is his own protagonist - far more of one than CJ ever was. He's infinitely more complex, more interesting, and outright better designed than any GTA character to date. By limiting changes in physical appearance, Niko is better anchored to the storyline. How silly would it be if you could have a fat Niko, or give him a giant afro or some dumb **** like that? It wouldn't make any sense given how prominent Niko's character is in the game.

In short: Niko's role commands consistency in appearance and attitude. You can still alter his clothes, but you cannot touch parts of his appearance that make Niko who he is - and I think that was an incredibly wise decision by R*.

===============================================================================

- Fully customizable cars.
GTA 4 had absolutely no customization what so ever of the cars.

This isn't a car sim. Vehicle mechanics work just fine in GTA, and car customization is a rather silly thing to complain about given the minimal and brief role most cars play in the game. On average, how long do you keep a car in GTA4? Usually until a mission is over or it explodes. Then you pick up a new one. Most definitely cars are not important enough in GTA to warrant a whole customization feature for the brief time you use them. Again, GTA4 is far more story-driven than its predeccesors, and unnecessary features like this would clutter an otherwise fine game.

===============================================================================

- The Phone works properly.
Many of the phone numbers you see in GTA 4 do absolutely nothing. For example the numbers displayed on TV commercials don't even fit into your phone, they are too long. In Saints Row you can phone buddies and have them arrive straight away to help you with anything you need.

GTA's phone feature is far more robust and better implemented than Saint's Row. This is coming from someone who is a huge fan of both games. You can knitpick all you want, but you do realise in GTA you can phone backup, chat, dates, call an ambulance, or just plain have some friend with old friends. The very fact that GTA even has TV commercials and shows is testament to how much richer a game it is. There are nuances implemented of incredible polish that you really should appreciate.

===============================================================================

- Gangs that actualy fight each other in real time.
Not even in GTA 4.

Yawn. This is not a petty gang-based game. Liberty City isn't presented as a stage for small-scale street gang conflict at every turn, nor does it overfictualize the reality of contemporary New York. In GTA4, gangs work in neat, organized groups; under the radar. Stealing shipments of coke or heroin discreetly from ships arriving on the ports. Organizing hits on people that need to be dispatched. Niko's character is interwoven with the crime scene of the game, and you seem to lack a fundamental grasp of that. The gangs encountered in GTA4 are methodical and based on hierarchy, a FAR more accurate portrayal of organized crime than the random gangbanging thugs firing shotguns off in plain daylight you see in SR.

In short: GTA4 isn't that kind of game. If you've played it, you'd get that.

===============================================================================

- Better Multiplayer.
You cant create your own gang in GTA 4 and the customization of you character is still very limited. There is also no balance in the multiplayer, you can get a good gun, yet someone can kill you with a few shots of a pistol, you don't even have time to turn around.

You just suck at the multiplayer.

In short: You still suck at the multiplayer.

===============================================================================

- Better voice actors.
Sure, sometimes its good to try and get the voice that fits the part right. But the truth is, nobody cares about the voice, they care about who's voice it is. There was not even one big name actor or voice actor in GTA 4, they could have at least tried.

...Uhm, you lose all credibility with this statement. Big names does not a better game make. The voice actors in GTA4 are top notch. My father, a 70-year-old Slav from the same Serbia which Niko hails from commented on how accurate Niko's voice was and how well-done the language was handled. The accents feel authentic, loaded with personality and expertly delivered. Every character has a voice that reflects their persona - from Roman's falsetto swagger, to Packie's annoying, sly and humorous tones, to Little Jacob's near incomprehensible thick voicing. It all fits perfectly, and the lines are delivered with superb and appropriate emotion.

===============================================================================

Pure opinion. I personally like a bunch of songs in the new GTA, and it also has a far greater selection to choose from. You seem to have poor taste in general.

===============================================================================

- Better side missions and activities.
The side missions and activities on saints Row were pure fun. Enough said on that one because that may be based on personal preference as well.

It is.

===============================================================================

I'm not going to go on forever about what things SR does better than GTA 4 because I'm sure those who have played both games know about them already. But to be fair here are some things that GTA 4 did better than Saints Row.

I'm sorry, GTA4 has one of the most complex, well-presented, nuanced stories of this generation - and you prefer Saint's Row? That's just plain bias showing through. GTA4 is hands-down the better game in this regard. And the endings to GTA4 don't suck. I have no idea what you're talking about here? The game builds up to a saddening climax either way you choose to play it.

And you seriously think GTA4 doesn't have diverse characters? Who can forget Brucie's roid fueled permanent state of adrenaline, the collective ranting of the whole McReary family, Vlad's obnoxious mustache, Ray's little italian Restaurant, Dwayne's massive depression.. I could go on-and-on. GTA4's characters are *entirely* more memorable than Saint's Row's. In fact, I don't remember a single character in Saint's Row, wereas I'm positive I'll always have an image in mind when I think of the vast majority of GTA4 characters.

===============================================================================

- Better Physic.

No.

===============================================================================

- Better Graphics. The graphics weren't that much better but the dynamic wet surfaces were cool.

Again,

No.

===============================================================================

- Helicopters and Motorbikes.

GTA had these too.

===============================================================================

That's it.

So my only conclusion is that GTA 4 got a better score because...its a GTA. The reason that GTA 4 got a better score is probably more or so based on psychology, and not the simple system of rating something based on what it's worth.

I think you're wrong.

Mau-Justice

You call GTA 4 pathetically shallow because you can't spend money on a house. :| Although I was a little disappointed with the lack of real estate, there is:

  • All sources of media (TV, Internet, Radio, Comedy Clubs, etc.)
  • Online Mode
  • Tons of exploration and detail in the city
  • Helicopter propellor slaughter

I'm pretty sure you don't know what "depth" means. Depth isn't the amount of fast cars in a game. Depth isn't the variety of weapons. Depth is an experience that can keep you sucked in for hours doing a complete variety of things that never seem to get old. Depth is what makes a great game.

Go figure, Rockstar creates an epic plot, epic characters, totally redoes the gameplay system, adds a breadth of media content in-game, ramps up the graphics to an absurd degree, creates the most effective caricature of a city ever done in this medium .. and people complain about not being able to buy safehouses or not being able to put spinners on your stupid car.

The irony in calling GTA shallow is not lost on me. If anything, you're shallow consumers that're more impressed by useless, purely aesthetic features than having a truly well-made and well-rounded experience. GTA4 is not a game you're going to spend 200 hours on. It's a mind-blowing 40-50 hour experience that is stunning if you're willing to give it a shot.

Saints Row never had a chance even game site called it nothing more then a Gta clone but my replay to that would be what the hell is wrong with that, there is nothing wrong with making a game that is very similer to other games hell i would love to see more Devil May Cry clones on the market or hell Ninja guiden clone or Mario clones for 360 and ps3. And just like part one no one is going to give part 2 a chance also....to me thats sad.

I first played a GTA game on my cousins PS2 even before I had mine. And I instantly fell in love with the roaming, freedom, and killing. Since GTA III, I have watched the great titles spew from Rockstar, Vice City, San Andreas, I don't think Vice City Stories, and Liberty City Stories really were that great but do deserved to be mentioned because there importance was GTA on the PSP. As much as I loved Grand Theft Auto, I love trying its "knockoffs" like Scarface, and all the other ones. After seeing the Saints Row commercial I played my cousins copy and will say this:

Saints Row is a GTA Clone. It takes the GTA elements and adds some good things and diminishes a few. And out of all the "clones" Saints Row must be the best. Was it better than GTA IV? Hell no. The interaction with other characters and people outside of missions was boring and not nearly as interesting or complex as GTA IV's. The City was so much more amazing in Grand Theft Auto IV, and so were a lot of other things.

Now before I get people pissed off for saying this, I will say Saints Row 2 might give GTA IV a run for its money. It's supposed to have nice sized city, Jet Skis, Customization, Planes, Heli's, and all the good stuff. However its lack of hype won't get it higher sales, or a 10. Plus SR2 comes out on my birthday. Also I think its good to have a Saints Row for the PS3 because I like it enough to want to spend $60 on it.

GTAIV is honestly one of the most boring games I've played and beat this year. The story mode took me 21 hours, the missons were very boring most of the time. They took out military, no airplanes, no rockets on helicopter, no pedestrian riot cheat and peds have weapons. Boring side missions. Cops are way to hard to kill in huge groups. A lot less weapons.

SR2 looks a million times more FUN. (notice the word FUN!!!)

GTAIV is just a long russian mob mafia romance bla bla bla movie imo.

OhSnapitz

agreed, gta iv had so much less content and got too realistic to the point that it got boring.

the main character will talk more in SR2 I believe.

Am I trippen or you just quoted yourself but changed the name? ha. Anyway, yeah Saints Row 2 seems to look like it would be more fun because of the crazy stuff you can do, but imo GTA IV still have the better story, until we find out whats SR2 is about.

El-Visitante

I'm not comparing Saints Row to GTA as a series, I am comparing it to GTA 4 only. I agree with you on a lot of your points but a lot of them dont apply to GTA 4.
