Why sales shouldn't matter.

First of all let me just say that if you're going to just skim through and not read the thread you probably shouldn't comment.

Okay, let's look at it this way:

The whole system wars argument is only leading to one direction. Our aim is to name THE CONSOLE. The one console. If someone who's new to video games wants to buy a next gen console he'll most likely come over here and see or he'll ask his friends.

Now, with that being said, he'll begin his investigation with three basic questions. First would be price, and since all three consoles are in the same price range, he'll then go deeper into a price to value ratio. So that raises the question "Which console provides the best value for it's price?"

I'm not going to answer this question.

Second thing he'd obviously want to look at is games.

Which brings the question: Which console has the top games? And "Top Games" in terms of current library and future titles.

And since we're still on the subject of games, Which console provides the best range of genres that the gamer will be interested in?

Third thing he'd consider is obviously online play, and this part is a very debatable one.

So if the new gamer was to come on here and ask which console to buy, are we going to give him the one that's selling the most, or are we going to suggest the one that has the top current gaming library with the most high rated titles?

If you don't get where I'm going with this, what I'm trying to say is that what role would sales play if it comes into factor for reasons why the new gamer should get a specific console?

the gamer isnt competing with anyone. the big three are hence system WARS.

The 360 has the highest sales (excluding Wii) and the larger number of quality exclusives (8.0+). People don't want to face it because it would end the main competition in SW, 360 vs. PS3.

Gamers should pay attention to games. The 360 as far as consoles would be a good example since going by critics it has the best library, has the largest library, and some of the best in the genres. Highest rated FPS with Halo, highest tps with Gears 1 and also Gears 2 was AAA, best exclusive racing series Forza, the most fighter games , the best version of the most popular wrpg this gen on consoles of Mass Effect 2 and so on.

we're on a gaming website, with thousands of articles, reviews and news stories regarding video games and gaming in general. if the new gamer has to ask a bunch of biased fanboys which console to get then quite simply he should just give himself an uppercut.

sales will always matter in the real world. Ussauly games with a high review will have high sales. they seem to come hand and hand

Dude, Sales Matter because if you don't buy the first game, There won't be a sequel and heck the development company might even not exist because noone bought their game and they went bankrupt.

If someone is looking to buy a new Console then shoot of course sales won't matter! That's when Scores and Reviews come into play!

Ok fine. With everyone's point about sales being important, let's take that and then thing of it this way. Okay, since people are saying sales do matter, don't you guys see anything wrong with events where a game with a lower score of the same genre ends up outselling a game with a higher score? wasted_wisdom

Having said, all the systems have sold enough that it doesn't matter at all in the real world.

how else ca we track a particular products popularity and how ift fares against the competition.

if someone decides to get a consoles and gets games for it, it turns into a sale!!!

It's a simple fact in the real world.

many posters here have tried to makes sales pitches in the disguise of blogs, fake testimonials and just saying console X sucks get console Y.

I would not be surprised if there are actual salesmen on games forums

The guy who said without sales there'd be no sequels...Ahhh I'm pretty sure the ps3 is getting its third installment of main titles this year. Right. I'm pretty sure the whole point of trying to decide who's the king of anything- as people seem to do here a lot- is to pretty much say this is what you should buy. And yes it is extremely tedious to make purchase decision based on SW, which is why i always say that people who come on here to ask which console to get are people who are just looking for backup to a decision they've already made. But besides that point, yeah system wars isn't saying buy this...But it's saying this is the best of this or that...and as long as that's what it's saying, what role do sales play in that? wasted_wisdom

Because it's the only argument for consoles with the least good games (Wii).

SW the only place people care that the 360 out sold the ps3 by 1 thousand, a number stock holders don't even care about.

The only people who should care about the sales are the developers, because they are the ones benefitting from them if the game is GOOD or BAD, it does not matter. So i dont see why fans should gloat about the sales of particular games.
And the golden rule...

Quality > Quantity.

I can understand why developers and companies are money driven and focused to making loads of money, but when they have that and make it there, surely they should and are able to allocate the resources, finance and effort to make a GREATER game rather than rehash the same game.
But some fans would buy anything as long as it has that label to it.
