Not really a discussion of graphics (as if people don't know the differences between PS4 and Wii U hardware), but just wanted to use the screenshots for reference of what there is actually to do in these games. Both are reboots/remakes for better or less, and both have traditional elements of their series.

However, it would appear that Star Fox is a straight rail shooter where you do not leave the arwing or other vehicles the entire game; there are no signs to show anything from Star Fox Adventures (hated game by many, loved by a few like me) thrown into this game. So basically, we're getting a 60 dollar arcade rail shooter from 1996, recently announced with forced motion controls (previously announced as optional).

Ratchet and Clank, if you didn't know, will be launching at only $39.99 in the United States. I'm not sure about other territories, Google will help you there if you care. Judging game screenshots and information, appears Ratchet will not only have aerial combat, but hand-to-hand combat, third person shooting, platforming and boss battles, like most traditional Ratchet and Clank titles.

How will these two titles do? Will they compete at all? Will Ratchet dominate over Star Fox in sales and scores because of Star Fox's higher price? Will forced motion controls hurt the game overalll? Discuss.

I would guess that most fans of these two franchises are over the age of 14, tbh.

I didn't know much about Star Fox until reading this thread, but it's good to know it's all arwing gameplay. Star Fox 64 was awesome because it was all space and arwing fighting. But if I remember correctly I've heard a lot of bad previews about this game, I guess because the motion controls are forced and don't work well. As for R&C, I understand it does more, but that doesn't matter if it doesn't do them well. Going by the screenshots it looks decent. But it's hard to tell, haven't heard much about this game, other than it's a remake, but I think I heard some negative preview about it too. I think it's best to wait for reviews on this one.

There's not much negativity surrounding Ratchet at all. The only negativity surrounding Star Fox Zero is about forced motion controls and subpar graphics, nothing gameplay related as most people are content with only Arwing gameplay like the N64 game.

Ratchet & Clank always played pretty good for me.

As for the OP, they are completely different games.

I'm more excited for Ratchet, but Star Fox looks much better now than it did before. I'll pick it up eventually.

That's pretty hard to believe, considering SFZ looks almost identical to Star Fox 64. Unless you've never played a Star Fox game before, of course.

@charizard1605: there are rail shooting elements in the new Ratchet, just like in most of the other games. Its just not the entire focus of the game like SFZ.

Fair enough. In my humble opinion, I wouldnt want to play SFZ or any console game with motion controls and two screens. Does not seem fun at all.

Starfox is very important to the WiiU because of the lack of third party games so anything released on the system is day to celebrate. Ratchet is the first installation on the PS4 so that is bit exciting since I like those games.

@jcrame10: I mean, yeah, but rail shooting was just one 15 minute long segment in the original Ratchet, if I remember right- if the new one is like that, that hasn't changed here. I just don't think they're all that similar, beyond being family friendly space themed games, I suppose. Still, it's a far more sensible comparison than a lot of the other ones made on here.

Ratchet and Clank has had Star Fox-like shooting elements since the very first game. Just because the two have a similar visual palette and and have like a 5% common ground in terms of gameplay doesn't mean they're even remotely comparable. It's a ridiculous notion.

Honestly, I'm surprised no one cares about the 20 dollar price difference (assuming SFZ will launch at full retail price of $60). That was what i was really trying to get going. Haha.

And I'm sure you know that Halo: Reach and Halo 4 both have space combat sections, which is why I mentioned Halo in the first place. But sure, if you want the argument to boil down to "both look colourful so they're the same", that's entirely up to you.

I agree with you, lol. I mean, if Zero is anything like 64, I'm sure it'll be great with loads of replay value, but eh. It's too much of a toss in the air for me to have confidence in it to spend $60 right off the bat.

Ratchet and Clank is a remake of my favorite game in the series (and also one of my favorite PS2 games), and everything about it looks incredible, and it's cheaper. It's a no brainer for me as far as my money is concerned.

Right. and that was the point of this entire thread that everyone missed.

Star Fox Zero is a rails shooter releasing for probably 60 dollars in modern times. Ratchet and Clank will offer rails shooting, plus platforming elements, third person shooting, hand-to-hand combat, and boss battles (in land and air more than likely) for only $39.99. Ratchet is going to offer a lot more, from a price point, than Star Fox Zero could ever hope to at this point (still no online MP, right?) Also, throw in some more trivial stuff like voice acting and full cinematic cutscenes and Ratchet is the better package, unless you're a diehard Nintendo person who eats up whatever they're cookin.

The forced motion controls are gonna kill it for me. I was looking forward to this game, especially when they stated you could turn off motion controls, but now that its no longer an option I'm totally turned off by it. Graphically is does look much better than the previous build, but that can't make up for the control scheme. Nintendo always has to take one step forward and two steps back.

Why would Star Fox being a rail shooter be a detriment to the game?

It was always a Rail Shooter from the very beginning and judging from sales and reception that's what people like and want from the Star Fox series.

Unfortunatley. Just recently announced this past week.

https://www.vg247.com/2016/03/04/motion-controls-cannot-be-entirely-disabled-in-star-fox-zero/

Also this is interesting too:

"But it’s also been designed to welcome younger, less experienced players

“We recognize that there are probably going to be younger kids who are playing a Star Fox game for the first time with Star Fox Zero, and maybe this will be their first action game,” says Miyamoto. “So we feel we’ve designed the game in a way that it will be welcoming to those new users and help introduce them to this style of action genre.”

“At the same time, we also feel the game is going to be a lot of fun for people to play in the living room with other people in the household. In particular with the cooperative mode, and also with the very simple shooting style of gameplay that’s in Star Fox Guard, we think it’ll be a great way to introduce people who maybe aren’t as good at this action style of gameplay to the fun of the Star Fox universe.”"

Sure, sure, no ones disagreeing with you here at all. But your description should warrant it a $20 eshop download title, not a full 60 dollar game

I don't think so. $40-$50 maybe, but I think there's more to Star Fox than what is being put out for it to be worth $60.

Then again this is Nintendo who sold us Splatoon for $60 at launch, and resold us Twilight Princess and Windwaker for no marked down price.

Honestly I don't know why Ratchet and Clank is selling for $40. Good will or No faith in the series?

I love Star Fox Adventurs too, in fact there isn't much made by Rare that I don't love. I don't care if it's another game with a Star Fox skin, I love it.

But I don't know if the two can be compared. Star Fox is a sequel with traditional elements. Ratchet and Clank is a straight up remake of the first one.

I'm looking forward to both.

The last good Star Fox game was 64. And there's no way that game fucks with Up Your Arsenal or Crack In Time. No chance in hell.

You only do because you're stuck with the WiiU as the only platform you own. Otherwise no one will care about this ugly game. Game looks almost on par with dat Metroid game we all love.

@R4gn4r0k: Star Fox Zero is vague about it's status in the Continuity.

For starts, Andross is alive. No Krystal or any mentioning. Scenes that seem to be parallel of 64's Scenes.

Star Fox Zero looks and acts more like Star Fox 3rd Remake rather than an actual Star Fox 2.

@LegatoSkyheart: I'm probably wrong, but maybe there's more to star fox zero that we haven't seen yet that will justify the price tag.

And I think ratchet is low because sony understands the market and demographic more. People just aren't willing to spend full price for single player games as much anymore unless they're massive like the witcher 3, which ratchet obviously is not. Also, it being cartoony automatically makes it "niche" in today's market unfortunately. I think they're really smart for launching at the lower price, it'll get more sales for sure. I'm a big ratchet fan myself and wasn't sure about spending a full 60 on it, especially with uncharted 4 and quantum break right around the corner. I can totally justify 40 for ratchet though easily

Perhaps this is like Zelda where every Star Fox takes place in another universe or timeline :P

Um, aren't you the guy who criticized SolidGame_basic's SSB4 vs Street Fighter V thread?

@R4gn4r0k: lol

@jcrame10:In other words, Sony has no Faith in the Series. That's the major difference between Sony and Nintendo right there. Even Extremely Niche Titles that won't budge the 500k mark are still sold for $60 launch for Nintendo.

@LegatoSkyheart: we will see how true those words are when the sales numbers roll in for both those titles.

@nintendoboy16: yep. That's going to derail this thread if I say anything else though.
