I've been interested in Heavy Rain and Quantic Dream's previous game, Indigo Prophecy. So, why is there SO MUCH hype for Heavy Rain? The story will probably be great but from all the previews the game looks like an interactive cutscreen. The player will obviously not have 100% control over the camera or the character. Doing this allows the developer to bump the graphics up a notch as the game wouldn't need to render much compared to other newer games. So IMO, this game is doing nothing spectacular.

The game looks promising. Not just from a technical standpoint, but also at a design standpoint, this game should be really unique.

Someone should be hyped for the mature stand point of this videogame, not for it's graphics (that look really great).

The fact that the game plays with you playing the game in scenes like the one that you'll aim to fail a QTE on purpose in a sword duel betwen Ethan and one of his son, is what ppl must be hyped for.

Using video games to tell a story effectively will/could be something truly unique to experience. There are few if any games out there that try to create a movie that you control. Yes interactivity is forsaken, for the chance to create your own story but I would love the chance to find a game, whose characters you can truly care for. Indigo Prophecy where the two primary characters first meet, Mass Effect with the choices for Wrex and at the nuclear device and a few scenes here an there from KOTOR and Vampires the Masquerade is pretty much all I can of that actually accomplish said goal.

To me its because it is something new to try out, and if this game turns out to completley fail, then eventually someone will get it right and turn it into something amazing.

I truly think that Heavy Rain can be a heavy weight in this year PS3 catalogue, yes it is different, but isn't what everyone is always looking.

Les see, a videogame made by a company known for pushing boundaries and making great games, fully backed by Sony (a company known for backing innovative and different games), with great graphics and animations hyped for 4 years since "The Casting" was shown as a sign of things to come in the next gen for PS3, and full control over the game's "mature" story with gameplay that merges with the cutscenes.

I wonder why.

Ok true but it's hype level has reached Halo3/MGSIV/Uncharted 2/MW2 level or even Infamous or Prototye level of hype yet.

Poeple are just looking forward to it

I'm surprised by the interest it has managed to conjure up as well. I guess it was the graphics which made people first take notice, but that's not what I'm seeing the majority talk about any longer. Seems like the yelling done by the "omgtehgrafix" crowd was heard by people who are actually interested in what Quantic Dream is trying to do. So that's great.

With that said, I made an attempt to not read your post as I just knew it was going to contain stupid. But I failed. :(
Basically you're making a bunch of incoherent nonsense up. Why? Who knows.

Because its the PS3. Obviously anything being released exclusive on the PS3 will be bigger then the second coming of Jesus.

But seriously, I am really disliking the hype for this game, if it can even be called that. Hell, the lead dev himself said he doesn't consider it a game anymore, and its genre is 'interactive movie'. I buy video game consoles to play video games, not watch movies where I can press a few buttons to interact. Honestly the only thing this game has going for it is its story, which looks really good. Well it hype honestly works the same for all exclusives. Reach, Alan Wake and Natal are super mega hyped, while anything related to Zelda, Metroid or Mario will sell more than hotcakes in a hotcake store run by naked supermodels.

I sometimes wonder how Call of Duty succeeded, than I remember how much more hate it seems to get.

Jeez... People complain when something is hyped up and brings nothing new to the table. This game is really kinda new ( I saw kinda cause it seems like a next gen version of shenmue but haven't yet played so dont know how similar it really is) And people bash it before they can even get their hands on it... I dont get it. Its like you cant do anything these days

Hype? All the hype gotta be purelly user related because i dont see any hype videos coming from the company to convince us that it rocks, lke cod or killzone 2 or far cry 2 and mass effect. Those games were full of hype!!!

I honestly don't understand the hype. Just because it's unique doesn't mean it's going to be amazing. Just look at mirror's edge, assassin's creed 1, or Fable 2. All unique games, all remarkably flawed. If anything people should be wary of this kind of thing, but naturally since it's an exclusive with decent graphics people are going "OMG AAA GOTY" without even understanding anything about the gameplay experience, if you can even call it that in this game's case.

You walk to, from and between objects which you then interact with, like in pretty much any other game ever. What is it about Heavy Rain's interpretation of this design that makes it so difficult to comprehend? Is it because you're doing things other than shooting/slicing people? Is it because it also incorporates QTEs as a gameplay mechanic?

And why does it bother you that others are interested in the prospect of a well executed mature, emotional story-driven experience?

But in this interaction lies the beauty of the game. No I havent played it so I cant attest to just how well this is done, but if Indigo is anything to go by then this game really will be a chance to participate in a movie. Yes as a result your actions are more limited, but its really like taking a good movie (if the game is done right) and allowing you the player to influence the ups and downs of said movie. Story in general is something that has been very lacking in the video game genre and I for one like that the game tries to make story its driving force, and not a shotgun....

Anyone with a brain would be wary of Heavy Rain as Quantic Dream's previous escapade ended up a trainwreck. But there's nothing wrong with being hopeful. David Cage says he and the team learned some lessons from Fahrenheit, so I'm willing to give him a second chance. There was a lot of promise during the earlier parts of that game. If they manage to build on that Heavy Rain could be truly great.

From what I've seen it's purely people like you who are obsessed with bringing up the graphics all the time, not the ones who give a **** about the game.

For the record I really liked Assassin's Creed and Fable II. Mirror's Edge was a good first try.

The only good format of entertainment is games, you can't have an interactive movie, no no, that's just bull. Terrible. Quality only comes from a well-established game with complete control... /s Why so much Heavy Rain hate? That's the real question.

You press a button then your character automatically stars moving. You use the control stick to control how fast they go, and press a few buttons along the way to 'interact' , with little to no control over the camera. Yeah, that sounds like mad fun.

What the hell is it with people always resorting to this argument. 'Omg if you don't like this game then you must be some noob who only likes shooting/killing things!!!' My favourite games ever are Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Mario Sunshineand Banjo Tooie, neither of which involve any slashing or shooting enemies to oblivion.

It bothers me that people are hyping a damn movie to be GAME of the year (you want proof, look through this thread someone already posted proof). I have no quams with the story, like I said it looks excellent. The game's problem is that it severely lacks GAMEPLAY, you know, the most fun element of PLAYING a GAME.

I think people that appreciate this kind of game will have plenty of fun. Judging by your favorite games of all time (By the way lol at Brawl. It was complete and utter garbage) you don't seem to appreciate a good storyline as much as other people do.

Oh I can appreciate a good storyline. What I can't appreciate is the lack of gameplay, which I've already said. If you argue that story ismore important then gameplay in a video game, then you should stop gaming altogether andgo watchmovies instead. I recommend the Shawshank Redemption.

You know, it IS possible to let you do all that WITHOUT limiting the gameplay so much, which is what you fail to understand good sir.

Besides which, video games are supposed to be about having fun, not pretending to be a movie director.

1. Fanboys and exclusive titles. 2. Its doing something unique with the genre, expanding it beyond the traditional games that are churned out. For that I applaud it.

I'm not hyped at all for it. Indigio Prophecy was unique but wasn't that good. The story was mostly incoherant rambling which made no sense and the second half of the game was terrible. But I don't know this might be good we just have to wait and see.

If someone is hyped only for the graphics of this game, means that have understand nothing.

People have been saying that the game will be pushing the PS3's capabilities.

The Cows say that about any halfway-decent PS3 game.

Graphics? NO. Just about everything is prerendered. Gameplay? What gameplay?

Longcat2

You walk to, from and between objects which you then interact with, like in pretty much any other game ever. What is it about Heavy Rain's interpretation of this design that makes it so difficult to comprehend? Is it because you're doing things other than shooting/slicing people? Is it because it also incorporates QTEs as a gameplay mechanic?

And why does it bother you that others are interested in the prospect of a well executed mature, emotional story-driven experience?

Fun is a relative term and also not the subject of discussion here. The matter of gameplay being a thing which Heavy Rain does, is. Since you've provided no proper counter-argument I'm going to assume that you have none. In fact I believe you just agreed with my assessment that the way the game plays, or gameplay if you will, is interactive and controllable by the player through a fairly standard interface, at least for the most part. Putting airquotes in text form around the word interactive doesn't really do much to change that.

I wasn't implying anything, merely inquiring, as this truly does mystify me. Your reply has only served to further confuse me. So there is no gameplay because you can't control the camera? I don't think you can control the camera in God of War 3 for instance. If that's incorrect I'm sure there are lots of other examples. Resident Evil for example. Do those games not feature gameplay? Does not compute.

Right. That would explain why you'd have a problem with the game, not the people who are interested in it. For whatever reason you seem to be getting agitated by this game getting attention because it's not your cup of tea. If people want to think it'll the best game ever, so what? Everyone has an ****ole.

Re-reading your post it's possible I may have misinterpreted some parts of it. So you actually believe the character is on rails or what? That you push a button and the person starts moving after which you control the speed like with a dial?

Is it wrong to be interested/excited about a game that brings uniqueness to an industry that is filled with countless FPSs and hack n' slash action titles? Seeing as how this is posted in SW INSTEAD of PS3 forums the fact that it's an exclusive will have the lemmings chiming in with you.

You know, it IS possible to let you do all that WITHOUT limiting the gameplay so much, which is what you fail to understand good sir.

Besides which, video games are supposed to be about having fun, not pretending to be a movie director.

Longcat2

Sure it is. If I wanted that I'd go play Mass Effect. Except Heavy Rain will probably focus a lot more on the story than Mass Effect does.

Look. This is obviously not your kind of game. You want to call it a movie? Go ahead. Doesn't change the fact a lot of people will have FUN playing this GAME unlike what you may think.

What hype ? People are just interested in the game no one is saying "Heavy Rain=goty" or craziness like that

EPaul

Actually, lots of fanboys have been saying that it will revolutionise gaming, be the graphics king, be the game of the generation, and so on.

...with great graphics and animations hyped for 4 years since "The Casting" was shown as a sign of things to come in the next gen for PS3...SPYDER0416

I seem to remember that when The Casting was shown the game was still multiplat. Sony started publishing it later on, so it wasn't really showing off the PS3's technology as such.

Anyway, I think there are many legitimate reasons to hype this game, but I was also really hyped about Indigo Prophecy and that failed to deliver on many of its promises, so...yeah, perhaps people should be a bit more cautious? :/
