Yes I know I have been hating on the Wii the last few days about motion controls and online but they are the ONLY things wrong with the Wii.
ShovelWare - Is Nintendo forcing you to buy shovelware? no? then dont.
Graphics - Even when I was still a PS3 fanboy I didnt care about graphics. Anyway the Wii has great graphics like Super Mario Galaxy and Monster Hunter 3.
No Games - Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, Metroid Prime 3, No More Heroes, Mad World, Super Smash Bros Brawl, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Little King Story, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Monster Hunter 3, Punch Out, Pikmin 3, Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii... Shall I go on?
So, whats not to like?

1. The Wii uses old hardware, it is not even a next gen system, much less a current one, hardware wise. In fact its a reshaped gamecube with a gimmick. Nintendo is more concerned about money than quality at this point, and they realized the kids out there who buy anything nintendo will eat up whatever they poop out. I grew up on nintendo, but they chose to abandon the fans who made them successful in the first place in favor of children and parents with money to waste.
2. Graphcis: The Wii has horrible graphics. The GPU is on the same level of the original xbox's in terms of power. You mention Monster hunter 3... have you played it? The graphics for the Wii hold their games back, which is why some developers love it. IT means quick money without doing a good job. Essentially what I am trying to say is that, using monster hunter 3 as an example, the models HAVE to be very low poly, the texture maps low rez (in fact all textures low rez), shadows have to be faked using textures, same with AO, so many effects and current gen graphical abilities are missing from the game and YES this directly influences some areas of the gameplay. Wii has horrible graphics, to say it doesnt is an admission to not knowing the actual details involved. Some of the best and lastest games are being developed using the unreal 3 engine for example, you will never see this on a Wii.
3. Whats more impressive, the guy with 20 ford focuses or the guy with 5 Ferarris? In other words, the Wii has very few quality titles that are not just junk titles. A list games in other words. The Playstation and 360 counterparts have "ferarris", bigger budget blockbuster titles. In other words more professional, greater quality projects with huge investments. All those games you mention are a little childs wet dream, nothing more. Princess this, super duper that, happy animal time...ect Its on the same level of Barney and friends.
4. So whats not to like? The abandonment of their original fanbase in order to exploit children for starters. Their complete lack of decent third party titles. The over priced piece of old hardware they are selling, where as the two elites are working hard on keeping the prices as low as possible for the consumers. Nintendo isnt competing or even trying to compete with sony or microsofts products, thats part of the problem. Competition brings out the best product, nintendo doesnt care, which reflects on how they opperate and the quality of their product. It comes down to exploitation of the dumb consumers. Parents will buy anything for their kids. Nintendo Markets that group specifically. Its less about "gaming" and more about money. Nintendo is going back to their roots (the bad ones). Did you know nintendo used to run brothels in Japan, sex hotels? They were linked to the Yakuza (mafia). Their past has them involved in all sorts of stupid and shady businesses, where they would look for the best group to exploit. Seems kind of like that now, and its fine. Just dont say it makes them great.
As the generation that made them what they were today, I could care less about nintendo. The original nes and brick gameboy I have collecting dust is a good reminder of how things change, and not always for the better.

1. The Wii not using old hardware. It in corporates motion control which couldn't be used in the last generation. What company isn't about selling money?
2. The graphic are certainly not at the same level as XBOX360 and PS3, but Wii games have proven that you don't need "teh HD grafix" to look great, i.e. SMG, MP3, Muramasa etc.
3. If I have always liked Ford, and like the Focus, why would I spent a significant premium to buy a Ferrari when I wouldn't enjoy it more?
4. Nintendo hasn't abandoned it's fanbase. Mario, Metroid, Zelda are all still part of their regular rotation. It's trying to grow it's fanbase to other demographics, so to survuve and thrive in a growing market and a bad economy. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo aren't about gaming. They are using gaming product to make money. Why do simple economics get pushed aside in SW?
And mentioning that Nintendo has some relationship with the Yakuza just reeks of desparation.
1) Wii C/GPU hardware is tried and tested and works. The risk was taken with motion controls. Sony and MS took different risks and have payed the price of an expensive console and an unreliable console. Both have now been fixed. But Nintendo won out with their new hardware risk.
2) Personally last gen graphics don't bother me from Dreamcast onwards. They are good enough. Now PS360 offer a great value HD experience I admit. But for serious HD visual freaks we have PC's. Well I do.
3) A Ford Focus is a lot more practical and useful, easier to drive, cheaper to run. I do have a Ferrari. It needs a Keyboard and Mouse. But Wii games are frequently more like Hot Hatches.
4) Again all the Kids I know have 360's. There are plenty of familly Wii's out there that everyone in the household uses. Be it Ice Age 3 (well reviewed), EA Active (well reviewed), Wii Sports Resort (well reviewed), HOTD Overkill (well reviewed), or MarioKart (well reviewed). This is a whole new start for the gaming industry, and I admit some pap has been released for the Wii as it was for the Atari 2600. Last time this happened we had a gaming crash. But I think Nintendo are brighter than Atari.

1. and 2. Most people don't judge games solely by how realistic their graphics are. There are many games on the Wii with amazing art****that completely makes up for the lack of hardware.
3. That's personal taste. I like a lot of the games on the Wii.
4. "The over priced piece of old hardware they are selling, where as the two elites are working hard on keeping the prices as low as possible for the consumers."
You, my friend, need to take a course in economics. You have this childlike view that MS and Sony are lowering their prices to be nice to their consumers. The reality is that they are getting their asses kicked left and right by Nintendo because their old price points weren't working and had no choice but to dish out price cuts or risk being kicked out of the console race.
Some people don't like the system simply because it lacks games that appeal to them which is a very good reason not to like a system. Unfortunately, there are some people who hate the system simply because it is popular and because of the great amount of casual-friendly titles it has, people who are so blinded that they are unable to see the great games the Wii has to offer.

That's an argument I can't ever find fault with because it depends on personal preference. However, some seem personally offended that Nintendo has taken a different tack this generation. IT'S NOT PERSONAL!
But of course, we as gamers can't let younger kids and adult and women into our esclusive club.:|

You might not be familiar with game design, the games are limited by the hardware they use. Kojima gave a nice lecture about it during GDC 09. As someone who also designs games and has to work with hardware limitations, I know first hand the limitations of the Wii and how it effects what can and cannot be done with a game. You mention games with good art direction on the wii? Such as? The Wii consists of game art that the wii can handle, nothing more. Mario? Yes its original. Amazing? No. It is no different than a saturday morning cartoon. In fact, the art direction was more respectable imo when Nintendo was making their games in 8 bit.
Furthermore, you completely ignored the context of my post. Childlike view? Dont be stupid. Competition means you fight for the consumers, the consumers get the best out of that. Nintendo isnt doing that. M$ and Sony are at least making that effort. PS3 goes down in price, M$ responds with the same... and vice versa. The Wii was designed to make profit right off the bat via consoles sold. This alone tells you they did not want to invest in higher quality games and capabilities. Sony and Microsoft actually lost money per console sold, meaning they were selling it for less than its production cost, however they make the money back through games, services and accessories. What did nintendo do? They did all that while giving a cheap system they also made money off of. What this says to the developer is that Nintendo isnt out to give the best quality, nor is it willing to compete. Developers tend to put games on the Wii for an easy buck. Serious game developers will be using alternate consoles that will actually allow them to develop the games they want.
In other words, in developer circles... the Wii is a joke. The professionals laugh at it. Nintendo relies purely on its first party titles. The 360 and PS3 do not. For developers thats everything right there. Also no, #3 isnt personal tastes. Its the difference in value, accomplishment and capability.
You need to realize there are more knowledgable people out there, and there is much you dont know even though you think you do. No one has to agree with me, just dont make stupid and false claims as a response.

Oh god, LOL @ professionals. People enjoy Nintendo games, whether you like it or not. If visuals are so important to you, just watch movies. You lost all credibility the moment you slammed Mario's art direction which is entirely subjective but you try to pass it as fact. Guess we should invest in more colourless games.
[QUOTE="Mau-Justice"]I love how you say the Wii has great graphics. The examples are Galaxy and Monster Hunter - a game that's not even out yet. I hate on the Wii because it's the only console out of the 3 that I've purchased and hasn't pulled it's weight. I regret it, it just doesn't have games I'm interested in, and the more remakes/rehashes I see the more I hate the console. Seriously they are remaking a bunch of Gamecube games and adding only IR controls. Mario Tennis/Metroid etc.ThunderdroneRAAAGGGGE!!!!! Sell the system. You're the joke here. Someone who holds a damn grudge against an electronic device meant to entertain  You know what, dont sell it. Treat it badly, call it names in the morning....show the Wii who's the BOSS !!! Not a bad idea, I'll get my moneys worth one way or another!!!

Several comments:
Artsty1e: Muramasa, Metroid Prime 3, No More Heroes, Red Steel 2, Punch Out.
Risk: Sure, MS and Sony took a gamble by releasing systems with the best hardware with a loss in profit. Last gen, Nintendo had a system with top notch hardware, how well did that work for them? They took the biggest risk by throwing out the tried and true method of significantly improving hardware and decided to go in a completely unproven direction, which was motion controls. Motion controls have payed off big time, which is why MS and Sony are getting their asses kicked and trying to play catchup with things like Natal and the Playstation Wand. These so called "professionals" and "true gamers" are copying Nintendo's methods (once again) for no reason, right?
Regarding the price cuts.. Econ 101: Lesson 1 -- Supply and Demand.
For someone who supossedly works in the gaming industry, I find it bizzare that you don't understand this concept that MS and Sony aren't giving out price cuts out of the kindness of their hearts. My point that your view is childlike stands.
1. The Wii not using old hardware. It in corporates motion control which couldn't be used in the last generation. What company isn't about selling money?

1. ROFL yes it is, are you even aware of the specs? Let me educate you, nicely. Nintendo FAILED with the gamecube. They literally failed, it never met their projected profit margins. It never took off like they "imagined". Instead of taking it as a loss, they used all the junk, the plants and deals they had already had in motion with the GC and turned into the Wii. Essentially they changed the packaging on their failed system, added a different controller and resold it with a slightly different marketing strategy. Sad thing is, you people bought it. Yes, it is old hardware. Its all the GC stuff they refused to take a loss for, and in a way, you are paying for it. Was it a smart move? perhaps, respectable...definately not.
You say the wiimote couldnt have been used on older consoles? Are you serious? You are not familiar with the technology then. Its been around for ages. In fact the accelerometers in the wiimote have been in third party playstation controllers and old PC controllers microsoft has made. Even the powerglove for the original nes had them. Furthermore, the infared camera tracking has also been around for ages. It could have ran on even the n64, the ps1, the xbox if they chose to. The only difference is, the level of feedback is dependent upon CPU. The Wii uses a 700mhz cpu. Do you know how slow that is by todays standards? The gamecube was 500mhz. Same ol thing. Lets look at the the Xbox Cpu speed: 700mhz also. Do you get it now? The original xbox has the same processing power as the Wii. Even the GPU which deals with the display is nearly identicle. The wii is on the same level as the xbox 1. The wiimote would have worked with that console as well if they chose to.
Let look at the other current gen systems. The 360 and PS3 are both above 3 Ghz in the CPU department. Thats a pretty big jump from last generation to this one. It allows for more possibilities in game design, less limitations, and better options. The 360 and PS3's tracking peripherals will be able to do much more than the Wii's. Heres a few interesting pieces of information you might not know. The Wiimote was the cause of a lawsuit in which a company owned a patent for the very same design and functionality of the wiimote. Another interesting tidbit that will ruffle your feathers is that the Sony Six Axis's patent was filed long before the Nitendo revealed the Wiimote as well as their "patent".
So everything you just said is bogus. Not because you are necessarily stupid, but rather because I am informed on this issue, which all plays a part in why as an indy developer I am not impressed by the Wii what so ever. The only thing that has changed over the years is the cost of production regarding accelerometers and infared cameras, its gone down, which is probably the only reason nintendo went with it.
2. If you think Wii games look great, you are obviously refusing to compare them to current gen graphics. There are severe limitations with the Wii, which is why you see a lot of similar looking games (cell shading, cartoon). The Wii cannot handle Abient Occlusion so the developers paint fake shadows on already low rez textures. The reason to use solid colors over textures is to hide the fact its low rez, which is why nintendo uses it. Current gen technology, can take a flat surface and give it 3D depth. IN other words, bricks would look like they stick out, even though its just a flat face on a mesh. The Wii cant do that.
Try playing the latest Batman game, and tell me if you think the Wii' graphics still look great. All it says is you are not familar with the technology involved, nor the process of creating models, textures, and how they relate to games. Wii games are very low poly and can only handle so much on any given mesh lest it hurt the games framerate. You wont see much in the way of persistent and or dynamic worlds on a Wii purely because it cannot handle it without tons of instancing.
4. Nintendo has abandoned their original fans with how they altered the franchises to target the next generation of children rather than the fans that grew older. Baby Mario for example. Really? Many of the original and super nes games had a large mature fanbase as well as kids, the games reflected upon it. Even the legend of Zelda 2 for the nes was aimed for older audiences.
A known fact: Nintendo was hated in Japan after the snes by thier third party developers. Why do you think the N64 and GameCube lacked so much third party support? Why did companies like Square, Camcom and Namco dropped ties with nintendo? Because Nintendo had a deal with Sony, which helped them develop their game consoles. The SNES CD was the next installment, but nintendo betrayed sony and the people they were working with, ruining a deal and backing out of their previous agreements to work with a UK company known as Phillips. The N64 was the product and the Japanese developers refused to work with Nintendo for the most part after that. Sony as a response to the betrayal and near insulting move by nintendo continued to work on the technology on their own. The playstation was born, and with it all those third party developers who were shocked and disgusted by Nintendo's actions.
You think me bringing up that Nintendo was working with th Yakuza as a desperate move? Hahaha, no its not. Its a historical fact. Nintendo owned sex hotels, taxi services, and all this reflected on their playing card business as well. Gambling basically. The Yakuza were heavily into those businesses, Nintendo was just one of them. Thats their roots, whether you like it or not. They do not have a respectable past. The past often has ties to the present, if you know where to look.
Theguy56
The topic isnt whether they enjoy it or not. Some people enjoy getting pooped on, others enjoy animal pron, if thats what floats their boat, so be it. However, what you say has no relevence to what I have said. Especially since you have spun the context in a completely different direction that whats said above. Try not to do that next time.

But you're ignoring that Nintendo makes great games even without HD visuals. The other systems have great games like Batman like you said. However, Nintendo's games offer a different experience which is a lot better than having 3 systems with the exact same games.[QUOTE="Shiftfallout"]
No one has to agree with me, just dont make stupid and false claims as a response.shoryuken_
Why do you continue to ignore the content of the posts you respond to? You keep injecting your own words and meaning into them, and ignore the points made against your own.
I alread stated what competition does, furthermore its not as simple as "supply and demand". Thats what people who have yet to take economy courses in college say to make up for their lack of knowledge concerning the complexity of the system and how profits are best made not only with a product, but also a service (that targets developers as well as consumers).
No where did i say anything about companies doing things out of the kindness of their hearts, you keep saying that. Those are your works, not mine, and you use it without reading the context of what you quote as a means of mockery. Really now, grow up.
I will explain one thing to you though, supply and demand has nothing to do with quality. Nothing. Nintendo manipulated the market by releasing a limited amount of consoles. This caused the demand to go up just because no one could find one due to the small number of shipments. People always want what they cannot have, many would buy and resell for twice the price. Its a simple strategy that works, especially for dumb people. Nintendo did carefully manipulate the market. It has nothing to do with the greatness of the product, just the strategy. Keep that in mind.
Shiftfallout, I'm a little curious: what company do you work for and what games have you helped design that have been hindered by the Wii's hardware limitations?
shoryuken, since when has anyone said which company the work for while posting as a normal user on a forum? That would be one thing developers do not do as a form of common sense, for most circumstances. Some of the work I am doing at the moment though is GPU based technical writing, lets just say ATI is involved (Wii uses ATI fyi). I can also freely talk about indy work that I am working on in regards to games. Specifics for companies though I am currently working with cannot be given. You should know that. I am here not as an employee, but as a normal user with an educated opinion and information concerning the subject.
Let me explain to you what I do commonly. It involves using Maya and 3DS Max to make meshes/models, a whole variety of visual assets, animations included. Taking those assets, putting them into game engines (I am not the best programmer so I leave the C++ work to someone else). Everything else though, I do, which includes scripting. Now, when dealing with the Wii, you are very limited with what you can do. The models have to be very very very low poly, the textures low rez. If you want shadows near meshes, you have to fake them most of the time by putting it on the texture itself, so its really not coming from any lightsource. Most of the techniques, visual goodies, and features I have access to for other game engines, cannot be used in the Wii. It limits what a developer can and cannot do. Nintendo is perhaps the most stingy of all the companies to deal with. I would never want to purchase a license and kit to develop for them. Just so you know, Games like World of Goo are indie titles. Wold of Goo, which is also on the Wii, was developed by two guys who hang out in a coffee shop working on their games. Microsoft is probably the smartest company when it comes to indy games. The 360 and XNA means that anyone can develop and distribute their own work directly onto the console itself. In fact, most game development programs (universities and specialist schools) come equipped with a 360 for that very reason. The 360 has the least amount of limitations for any console. If you think it up, it can be done, and done well.
On that note, I do use a wiimote from time to time on my computer. Nintendo was smart to use it and help create a larger market for the older technology, the problem is the system they use it with. It works much better on a PC. Anyone can create a game using the wiimote for the computer, fyi.
More good games on PS3, 360 or PC than Wii. Bottom line. My wii is played for Zelda, Mario, Metroid and good Nintendo franchises. And even with third part support, the general library is quite lackluster compared to the other three. (go topretty much any gaming site large or small and the majority will agree with this evaluation)It has sold well due to its easy to pick up and play nature and innovative motion controls. Corruption and Super Mario Galaxy were great, but those are really the only standout games I can think of.
1. Yes I do know the specs. You yourself said that the Wii has a faster processor, that means new hardware. I'm not arguing that the Wii's power compares to the other systems, I know it doesn't. However, I'm suggesting that the Wii is not a GC rehoused in different plastic. I'm also aware that motion control has been used before, but not with the GC or any of the previous generations consoles. The individual tech has been around of course, but it now brought together in a fine controller.
2. I own a PS3, so I can directly compared Wii games to Ps3 games. I find many of the Wii games well worth looking at, since I'm not a graphics snob. So what if the Wii used tricks to get past the fact that it isn't a graphics powerhouse. Who cares? The games are great to play and to look at.
4. You act as though a company/developer does not have a right to alter it's franchises based on current trends and different demographic range. So your choice in game ****remains without old concepts? That's fine. And companies do make mistakes and certainly Nintendo is trying to recover from the PlayStation debacle. They are now making the top-selling console, despite many "loyal fans" leaving for other systems. Which means those fans aren't loyal. They didn't change as Nintendo did. Nothing wrong with it, people change, but those people shouldn't call themselves "loyal".
I'm not denying Nintendo's history. How many other companies have such connections to crime etc. But it has nothing to do with a discussion about gaming.

Some people don't like the system simply because it lacks games that appeal to them which is a very good reason not to like a system. Unfortunately, there are some people who hate the system simply because it is popular and because of the great amount of casual-friendly titles it has, people who are so blinded that they are unable to see the great games the Wii has to offer.
jimkabrhel
That's an argument I can't ever find fault with because it depends on personal preference. However, some seem personally offended that Nintendo has taken a different tack this generation. IT'S NOT PERSONAL!
But of course, we as gamers can't let younger kids and adult and women into our esclusive club.:|
Of course we can't. They are not cool enough.

Ok, a few things.
1) Graphics: Not a single game on the Wii looks current gen. Super Mario Galaxy and Monster Hunter 3 included.
2) Games (the MUCH more important issue): Sure, there's tons of games on the Wii but what's worth playing? Out of the games you listed only SMG, SMG2 and New Super Mario Bros Wii actually seem promising to me and I played SMG a long time ago. If you like the games they've got and the ones coming look great to you then enjoy your Wii. As for myself, I'm not impressed. I'd like to see them come out with something great for me to play but I just don't see it coming. Maybe next year they'll have something other than Mario?

One person's opinion doesn't equal facts. Whether or not you feel that Metroid Prime 3, No More Heroes, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, de Blob, Okami, and Madworld isn't appealing to you, that is irrelevant to the general consensus. There will always be that one person that will bash anything that a general population likes. Graphically, there's no way the Wii can match up to PS360, due to lack of HD capabilities. However, if the Gamecube is arguably more powerful than the Xbox, the Wii should be more powerful than the Xbox. IMO, the Wii graphically sits between the Xbox and the PS360. Is it a bad thing? Well, it's giving developers a platform to test new ideas that would've never seen the light of day on the PS360 due to the huge financial risk involved, and especailly in this day and age, one wrong move means Chapter 11 for them.[QUOTE="Tobin09"][QUOTE="goblaa"]

I didn't like NMH. Something about a super-nerd with a lightsaber with a stick on one side, and lazy graphics. (I know Cell Shading ok, but NMH was a little on the lazy side. Crackdown/Borderlands both have great examples of cell shading) SSBB was melee with a small graphical update and a handful of new things thrown in. Punch-Out is worth a try, maybe buy if you're into it, and MP3 is good, but it aint heavenly or anything. Most of the gameplay is the same as MP1 and 2. I mean, that's just my opinion and all... and I don't care that I butted in your guyses Convo.
The Wii is an okish console to me i do play it from time to time but as the console that is "winning" this console war i was expecting it to blow the competition away games wise but that's not the case as it is currently being outdone in that department by both the 2nd and 3rd place consoles.

The PS3 and 360 have a much smaller install base and less money to work with so it's to be expected also in case you didn't figure it out i was listing the winning consoles and games they had in within that time frame, why isn't Nintendo out buying devs and quality 3rd party exclusives like Sony before them ? Nintendo's sitting on a mountain of money a 50+ million install base but yet the Wii is lacking games big time when compared to other gens, why?

You missed some stuff for the Wii.
It is overpriced I dont like the idea on spending $249.99 on a console that has outdated graphics, inaccurate motion controls, and poor online service. Then you got all these shovelware games which wouldnt be that big of a deal if it didnt consume more than half the library of games.. Which unfortunately it does. But dont get me wrong there is some good games but its still nowhere near the amount that other consoles provide.
