...Since the new rating system
I am a fanboy to several franchises, I'll admit that. However, fanboy or not, I am always ready to see the obvious flaws my favorite games have. I love MGS, but I also see it's flawed camera issues and less than desirable combat system. I am able to criticize my Final Fantasy games for their overuse of random battles, or Forza 2 for it's sever lack of tracks and cars.
When I hype a game, say FF13 -- I have very high hopes that it will be amazing, but I always expect to see something critics won't like when the game is released, and I usually can see that before the game is released.
However, in Starcraft 2's case, I can't even imagine what could prevent this from being the greatest RTS ever made --
if Blizzard pulls through...
What I mean by that, is if Blizzad succeeds in everything they have said, the "Good" and "Bad" section of SC2's review should look like:
Score
10.0
Prime
Summary:
The sequel to one of the most popular computer games in history has proved itself as arugably the greatest fast paced strategy game ever created.
The Good:
Fresh, innovative, and immersive way of playing through an RTS's campaign -- Epic story as played through the perspectives of 3 different races -- Amazingly in depth World Map Editor allows for unlimited creativity useabe by newcomers and veterans alike -- Possibly the greatest online multiplayer component to ever be implemented in a game -- Near perfect (if not flawless)balance between 3 very distinctly unique and thrilling races make the foundation for one of the most competitive games inhistory -- Custom made maps make for unlimited replayability -- Gorgeous visuals, effects, and enviroments -- Superb voice acting and entertaining unit responses, phenomanal sound track and sound effects -- New units feel right at home in the Starcraft universe -- Feels and plays like the original despite it's radical additions.
The Bad:
Life is short.
Am I being extremely wishful and unrealistic? Probably.
But look at Blizzard's history, and understand that they have been working on this game for over 5 years. They still haven't even revealed the Zerg yet. These guys are working hard. If you go on the Battle Net forums, Dustin Brown, the lead designer of SC2 is actually talking to everyday players and listening to their concerns (even me). They constantly update their changes and additions to the game, and if it isn't well recieved -- they remove it just like that.
This is Blizzard's biggest project ever, they know millions of people are counting on them, including a large portion of Korea. They know if they release a sequel that is kinda cool, but has issues -- alot of people are gonna be pissed. I kind of feel sorry for them that they are one of, if not the only developer that has a reputation of always making a hit game.
The only problem people expect is, Starcraft 2 won't reinnovate the RTS genre. But look at the scores of Halo 3 or SSBB. Halo 3 perfected what it set out to do, as did SSBB. I'm sure fans of those games are thinking -- "how can they possibly make these better?"
And it's not like SC2 isn't doing new things. Look at the predicted Good section I just wrote and tell me Blizzard isn't capable of doing every single one of those.
