NGP and 3DS will both be highly succesful systems, no doubts about that. However, most people believe that the 3DS will outsell the NGP because they are reminded of what happened with DS vs PSP battle. DS was aimed at casuals, PSP was aimed at hardcore gamers. And this handheld gen almost looks the same, but will we really get the same results? I don't think so. Here's why:

1) Most casual gamers are playing on smartphones and tablets nowadays. The audience who purchased millions of DS units are the same audience that like to play games on smartphones. They understand that the 3DS is superior, but smartphones are considered "good enough". This is where hardcore audiences step in. A hardcore gamer would never play an FPS game on a 3-inch touchscreen device with virtual analog pads. If Nintendo were strategic, they would try their best to make the 3DS appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers. You can't always rely on casuals all the time.

2) The NGP is powerful enough to play games that use Unreal Engine 3 and similar engines. This means it can share multiplats with PS3, 360, PC, etc. Don't be surprised if some future games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, BioShock, Fallout, and various others come out for NGP.Activision confirmed that CoD is coming to NGP (likely MW3), so don't expect the NGP to have a poor library.

But would you get an NGP for those or just get a PS3 with better graphics? At least the ports Nintendo are doing will give you a superior experience to the previous version, Zelda OOT and Starfox 64. NGP won't outsell 3DS because it doesn't have Pokemon and Mario.

Just because the NGP will have lots of multiplats doesn't mean that it can't have exclusives as well. Of course it will have exclusives, although it will be mainly first-party. The NGP can actually have advantages over PS3 multiplats: portability and lower price for retail games.

NGP might not have Pokemon and Mario, but it does get CoD (confirmed by Activision). If NGP gets Modern Warfare 3 and it lets NGP users play against PS3 uers, prepare for a lot of sales :P

Sorry, but that wouldn't feel right. Sony should make an IP that actually should compete with Pokemon. Capcom and Monster Hunter just aren't cutting it (I say this because some people compare Pokemon and MH).

Has it really come down to the fact that DS is the Wii of handhelds and PSP is the PS3?

So much fail omg, Nintendo has always been catering to "casuals" it's nothing new, there will always be a "Sega" around that will capitalize on markets Nintendo doesn't feel they want to cater to, that's how it's always going to be. (One of Sega's selling point was that they had blood in their games while Nintendo battled against this issue vs Sega in court, and lost, people apparently want blood in their games but Nintendo will never cater to those due to company values)

You can't judge the sales of 3DS vs NGP based on casual vs "hardcore" system, sorry.

It's more about the system having a mass market catch, NGP lacks a feature to compete with 3D, Nintendo is also the best company marketing wise aswell. The golden rule still applies: Software pushes hardware sales, and 3DS has RE, MGS etc etc.

honestly they could use Digimon, but they would need a developer to make addicting and fun gameplay. Digimon are way cooler than Pokemon, and since the premise of the series is to essentially save the digi-world and real world, you have a lot of freedom itha story that you could do.

Aftergetting a PSP and being very disappointed with the system, I won't be buying another Sony handheld. I actually traded my DS for it too, which turned out to be a huge mistake.

Any game - multiplat or exclsive - can sell systems if they are very good. My friend bought a PS3 thanks to Call of Duty, and thats a multiplat game. Perhaps one multiplat alone isn't always enough to sell systems. But loads of them? Thats another story. Oh, and the NGP WILL have exclusives. Its not like they won't exist.

Perhaps. Though as of now Sony's strategy with the NGP remains the same as it was last generation. Nintendo's strategy remains the same as last generation as well as taking part of the core audience that the PSP had.

EXCUSE ME what,

the same was said about psp which was also

1 more powerful then the ds offered games like killzone mgs etc ya the same old stuff you know why it did not sell as good -price

lets see what else ds already had its games by the time psp came and it was also dropped in price had more battery life

this will be the same situation --

the ngp is more powerful then 3ds

the ngp cost 100 more then the 3ds

the ngp will play mostly the same games as psp 1 just with more powerful graphics ,

people dont want that well some do but the majority wants different games gameboy lasted agaisnt a gamegear

the 3ds will have good games byt he time ngp comes out it will be a no brainer

if you look at the us sales already---the 3ds and ds is still beating psp already and 3ds doesnt have a single killer ap from nintendo yet -most ly new/to uncommon games

wait for mariokart wait for zelda wait for super mario 3d kid icaris -im sure the core will be all over thelater -they have been hounding for that game since god knows when

and once third party gets their act together (even they have had some of their greats at launch) i think they will have some more for us

pokemon is also another thing no body can compare to that

and about that call of duty thing,

nintendo ds had 3-4 call of duty games and didnt even have power ,,how did that go huh

no body wants to play a big game like cod on a small screen

they want unique games for their handhedl and 3ds has them , andwill have more

it will not rely on mostly ps3 ports or ports of that gens games it willalso have its own games this is where psp failed at ,

most of its games were ports -and the same is going to be said about ngp ngp will sell good but not what you think

if that were the case why didnt cod sell on ds , and why didnt psp sell as much as ds you still beilieve ngp gonna walk away with the victory let me tell you

it wasnt the psps game library being bad it was the fact that all of those games could be played on ps3 and be better ,

and the same goes for ngp and at 350 $ you think its gonna out sell a cheaper unit parents will not walk past the 3ds once ds is off the market

they will flock to it they will pay 250 instead of 350 and this is where ds got most of its sales -the kids and adults who sticked with nintendo for these years ,

they will continue to do so

You seem to be saying that the 3DS mostly appeals to casuals, and that the NGP has l337 graphics and as such will have console-like games. The DS sold gabillions because it appealed so well to a casual audience. The PSP sold so (comparatively) poorly because all it did was offer games people were already playing on the consoles they already owned. NGP is the laziest device Sony have come up with since the PSP Go.

If there's one thing that I praise Nintendo for doing (and I usually tend to criticize it), that is the fact that its DS has had a lot of original, creative, and successful IPs, unlike the Wii. Sony will really need to push beyond having well established exclusive franchises if it is going to see the NGP sell better. This will still be a pretty hard thing to do. I'm no handheld gamer anymore, but I still like to catch a small glimpse into the handheld gaming market, from time to time. Even with so many titles on the DS being interested and varied, I just wouldn't put out any of my money to buy it, especially since I prefer mature-rated titles most of the time and ones that I can play online co-op and/or multiplayer with my friends.

I agree somewhat.

Also 2004 was a totally DIFFERENT TIME than where we are today in 2011.

Back then, smartphones were rare extremely new and not as saturated as it is today. Also, back then, most people had SMALL cellphones that you flip to open. Now, smartphones are simply trying to be like iPhones.

Monster Hunter is a really good game, many PSP gamers love it, BUT America suffers from sprawl and we need the online system to be better. America is not set up like Japan where its easy to get with your friends and play. Once they incorparate the wifi multiplayer it well be better.

Hard sigh....people the truth is. The global economy was in a lot of trouble in 2008. Nintendo sold the most because they were the CHEAPEST, Price is everything. No matter what features a product has the cheaper version will sell way more then the luxury version. Toyota will always outsell Lexus, Honda will always outsell Acura and Nintendo will always outsell Sony until the prices are closer like the ps1 n64 days. These sales topics are always so stupid to Coolyfett, maybe because you get what you pay for. Now Coolyfett will also say the Mortal Kombat situation in 93 really did annoy him. Why did Sega give us the real deal and Nintendo gave us the sesame street version??....Coolyfett was in 7th grade that year and he knew it was a wrap with Nintendo for doing that. Never bought anymore of their products since. You get what you pay for people. The cheaper products will ALWAYS sell more so dont feel bad if you are an owner of the luxury version. You paid the higher cost to have the better system.

1) Most casual gamers are playing on smartphones and tablets nowadays.PandaBear86

casuals buy systems they don't buy software. All nintendo needs is 2 or 3 games that really appeal to casuals and boom they will sell millions. Casuals are finicky, they get bored easily and are constantly buying the new hottest thing. 3DS has a chance to be that.

price is not everything.. The 360 was only 50$ more than the wii at the time. It was a new experience, it was that got to have it holiday gift... it being reasonably priced definitely helped but it wasn't the main factor. People wanted it so much that for the first 2 years it was selling at around 400-500$ on ebay and amazon because how much everyone wanted it.

Yeh I agree with OP, going by current market research, it almost certainly will beat the 3DS if it holds it's interest with with 16-35 demographic for flying pigs.

Nintendo still has many strong IPs. Pokémon alone could move millions of 3DS.

3DS will have Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, Dragon Quest and possibly Monster Hunter too, so I don't think so. ;)

I expect a very close race but NGP outselling 3DS that wont happen unless NGP launch price is $250 and SONY securing some big games like Monster Hunter, DQ, CoD....etc on their system

Kashiwaba
Wow i didnt know that DQ and monster hunter were coming out on NGP. And a 250 price tag is pretty good. I think i will get one sooner than later.

[QUOTE="Coolyfett"]

VendettaRed07

price is not everything.. The 360 was only 50$ more than the wii at the time. It was a new experience, it was that got to have it holiday gift... it being reasonably priced definitely helped but it wasn't the main factor. People wanted it so much that for the first 2 years it was selling at around 400-500$ on ebay and amazon because how much everyone wanted it.

noooooooo to everything you said. Cheaper sells more. You have to pay the cost to own the boss.

The 3DS is selling like hot cakes right now!! Everyone plus their uncle Fred has one!! NGP will have more to offer and will ultimately sell less.

I don't get why most people in SW greatly dismisses Nintendo and always predict doom and gloom for the company. Cafe and 3DS is failure here and there while it's still too early to tell and they're being compared to DC and Virtual Boy. Sony on the other hand is immune to this especially that PSN was hacked. Sony is always praised. PS3 is set to succeed and crush the Wii. Yet it didn't. PSP is set to kill the DS. Yet it didn't. Now NGP is set to kill the 3DS. Sigh.... GGD and specific platform forums are really better places for logical arguments and debates.

It will sell well no doubt, but in the end the 3DS will sell more.

3DS just launched and unless you know what will happen for the next 3-6 years, your claim is laughable at best. RE4 was supposed to be a GC exclusive yet a PS2 version was made.

Keep in mind that the NGP won't be competing with the 3DS. By the time the NGP is released, it'll be competing with the 3DS and a fantastic line-up of games including a number of highly anticipated first-party titles. That's going to give the 3DS a significant competitive advantage.

The NGP can actually have advantages over PS3 multiplats: portability and lower price for retail games.

PandaBear86

Anything is possible, but what makes you think the games will be cheaper? The cost of the games will be directly related to production costs. If the ngp is going to have the depth of play of a ps3 game that means the games will be pricey. Also, who would even want games like that on a portable? I sure as heck don't want half my battery wasted on a cut scene. I bought a 3ds without hesitation based on knowing that there will be at least two handfuls of Nintendo games I'd want, plus the VC. I'm taking a wait and see approach with the ngp.

Monster Hunter is a really good game, many PSP gamers love it, Coolyfett

what if it goes multiplat to the 3DS.

Nah the NGP will become irrelevant just like the PSP and Sony Move.Sp4rtan_3

Pretty sure the PSP has been outselling the DS and 3DS in Japan consistently for quite some time now. It also has an install base of 60 million. Irrelevant?

He's right. The psp, in japan, is a whole different story.
