Although it is the innovative Nintendo Wii that has captured the hearts of gamers around the world thanks to its unique controller that allows you to immerse yourself in the game more than ever before, and the sales lead that xBox 360 has over its rivals, ultimately, PlayStation 3 will emerge as the number one console in the current war of formats despite its hefty price tag, and the rumored problems of developing games for the platform that have been reported.

Sony has an enormous loyal army of gamers who have been waiting close to six years for the release of the Sony Playstation 3, and now that it has finally arrived, those gamers are only too happy to fork out for the machine that they have been dreaming about for so long. In the UK, you can buy two xBox 360 consoles and a game for the price of a single PS3, but that is not the issue, nor does it matter that the actual capabilities of the two machines are so closely matched, what matters to gamers is that the PS3 is the machine that Sony have built for them.

Sure it has all the bells and whistles that it needs to turn heads including a BluRay drive to allow it to serve as the core of a high end home cinema system, as well as the latest Hi Definition capabilities, but so does xBox. Sony though, have captured the imagination of gamers for more than a decade with their systems, thanks to the variety of games that are available on them. There is no one genre that works particularly well on the machine, no more so than on any of its rivals, however, PS3 will have the classic Final Fantasy titles available for it along with plenty of other limited edition games that are published only by Sony such as Gran Turismo and even Crash Bandicoot.

Sony will succeed in the console wars because they already have their hardware in so many homes. Gamers are not stupid; they buy a system because it works well, and offers them what they want. The fact is that more than a hundred million people bought the PS2 because it did what they wanted from a console, and now they will upgrade to the next version, maybe not until the price comes down, but they will wait, and eventually, as Sony expected, they will have the largest network once more.

The blu ray disk player is a nice feature for anyone who wants to buy and view high-definition DVDs.The problem with the Playstation 3, however, is three-tiered. Firstly, the console is overly expensive. It costs $600 for the high-end console and additional costs come from expensive accessories. In addition, the game selection available for the Playstation 3 is slim to none right now, with no real appealing exclusive games. Finally, many HDTVs owned today can't display 1080p, thus negating the effects of such high resolution.

All in all, the high price of the Playstation 3 has caused many to balk at a potential purchase. Sony trails both Nintendo and Microsoft in sales.

On the other side of next-generation consoling, Nintendo created a system that doesn't need high-end graphics or realistic gameplay to succeed. The Wii works by letting players feel in control of the game they play. Want to play baseball? Grab the controller and swing it like a bat. The concept is unique and appeals very well to casual gamers. The very reasonable cost of $250 is also a good selling point to those who don't play video games often.

The problem with the Wii is it might not have enough to appeal to hardcore gamers. While Nintendo does boast several heavyweight titles with Zelda, Metroit, and Mario games, the majority of their new releases fall short in terms of depth. Still, the Wii has outsold both Microsoft and Sony since its inception and looks to have a bright future.

As it is now, a clear winner of the three cannot be determined. The one thing that is for sure, however, is that thePlaystation 3 is in a distant third place. It remains to be seen which console will be the most beloved in three to four years, but for now my money is on the Wii for its mass appeal."

if the 40 gig ps3 for 400 bucks comes out this year it will be hard to find this xmas. i think ull start to see fans of the ps3 start steping to next gen. but if ms has a real price cut then some of those gamers could jump ship to 360.

True, gamers will buy what they want.

However, a majority of gamers arefrom aMadden and GTA crowd. In which case they went with 360. In Japan that's a different story, but the Wii continues to dominate there too. Nobody is buying the PS3, and it doesn't matter if sales are about the same amout of money at the end of the day, 360 and Wii have significantly more machines in homes. If nobody buys it, which they currently have little to no incentive to do so, then 3rd parties will leave it for greener and more profitable pastures.

Sony has loyal fans, but that is only maybe 25% of the people that bought PS2.

True, but you make a mistake in assuming this will always be the 360. That is not necessarily true. Even though the 360 DOES have a great library right now, compared to the competition, it is a far (FAR) cry from the PS2 library which made the console sole great.

Where are all those games going? They aren't going to the 360, which seems to offer more of the same as the 360. More sequals, more FPSers and a couple more RPGs from the people who made RPGs for the Xbox. Nothing all that new unless you include the multi-plat titles they didn't get before like GTA or DMC.

The fact is, people arguing about games right now are being extremely narrow minded and short sighted. There is no doubt that the 360 has a strong library. However, it still doesn't come anywhere close to the game library the playstation brand has had. Sure, the 360 gets the big name titles from big name companies. But for any game library, those games are vastly outnumbered by the smaller, lesser known titles from smaller devs. While having a library made up purely of big name games may SOUND great to the small number of casual posers who only CARE about bragging to their buddies....the vast majority of gamers like diversity and a wide selection of games. RPG gamers like big name RPGs, but they are more likely to buy the console that offers LOTS of RPGs over the console that offers 1 or 2 big rpgs a year. This goes for all genres.

Something drastic will have to happen to get more PS3's selling. A very low price would help, but can Sony afford to do that? A lot a good games for the PS3 would help too.

The 360 coming out a year ahead and the Wii's cheap price and popularity have helped them greatly. What's going to help PS3 sell? Only time will tell how it does.

399.99+rachet and clank, uncharted, unreal3, mgs4, t6, socom, dmc4, cod4, will help ps3 also when in the U.S.

you guys have to remeber, for every time 360 sales, get worser and worser in japan, the more ps3 will sell over it and will add up to the ps3 catching the 360 soon. this also the case in europe, where they wont even make 360 games for the system over there because its just not selling, games will come wit the ps3 version only, that will even add more.

Sony claimed "they could sell 5 million PS3's at launch even if it launched with no games". Well 11 months and plenty of games later they have yet to sell 5 million to consumers. Whoops. :oops:

85% of all PS2 owners bought their system when it was $199 US or less. Anybody that thought these people would turn around and buy a system for $399 US or more need to go to their local courthouse and declare themselves "legally stupid".
