For the "services" that not much people use. Most subscribers just want to play the damn games.

Mr_BillGates

Oh. If you could just link me to the set of usage and consumer behavior stats for Xbox Live, I'd love to take a look this data you have.

No. I have a choice. I always have a choice. I have both systems and use them regularly. When I want to go online, I choose Xbox Live Gold even though it's free on my PS3.

Nothing's stopping me from cancelling or letting my subscription just run out. I just like the features, services and conveniences that Xbox Live Gold offers. If you want specifics, you'll have to check my posting history. I've repeated myself in at least a dozen threads like this, two of them in the past day or so.

VoodooHak

You are not making sense to me you have a ps3 and can game online but you choose to pay to play on the 360?? Unless your playing games you can't play on the 360 that is just a waste of money. I had a 360 but after two rrod I sold it and got a ps3 and psn is very close to live but it is just free meaning psn >>>>>> live imo. The only feature I miss on psn vs live is cross game chat and it is not like I used it much. Cross game chat is not worth 60 dollars a year to me.

That's your experience and that's fine. I find value not only in cross game chat. I also use cross game invites on a daily basis. I use the party system all the time. These speaks to the level of integration since they exist at the OS level and run in the background no matter what I'm doing. I also like the community-focused events like game with fame and game with devs and my personal fave, Community Play Date. These things are right there on the dash in a dedicated My Community section. It's right there. No need to launch separate apps to find them. Again, it's integrated in a way that's easy and makes sense.

Speaking of community, the staff is really good at responding quickly and publicly Example: javelin glitch in MW2. The director of policy enforcement responded right away and his staff suspended exploiters until IW fixed it. Sony went on record that they weren't going to do anything, statement given my an anonymous rep. I also have a wife and daughter who really dig the GamerChix. With elections just happening and the supreme court considering video game issues, I find MS's Play Smart Play Safe campaign invaluable. Just as valuable as their work with other minority groups to shape Xbox Live policy locally, nationally and globally. What's Sony doing? They have a small digital version of their parental controls on the website... and that's pretty much it.

To a lesser extent, I like the direction Xbox Live is going in terms of breadth of services. The Zune marketplace isn't just movies anymore. It includes their entire music library. so my points and my Zune Social friends list, MSN messenger contact list, and Windows Live list are all together now on the My Friends part of the dash.

These are all things that are that are relevent to me. Unfortunately, Sony either doesnt' do these things or they don't do them nearly as well.

Like I've been saying for ages, these are my reasons and everyone's reasons will be different.

You know... we can both the right.

It is cool I just get online game for a hour or 2 then get off. I forgot to write about the party chat and invites good features bot not 60 dollars good.

They're $60 good for me.

My time is very finite. The more convenience, integration and features I can get for that limited time, the better.

Logic FAIL.

You dont have a choice. You JUST stated that you like certain features in XBL. In order to access those features you HAVE NO CHOICE but to pay for said features. When there's no need. ALl other systems are free. That should have been the end of the discussion right there. ALl the otehr systems are free, XBL live is a rip off. Just because you are willing to pay for it doesn't make that untrue. Then they go and say that you HAVE to pay them more money because of their exclusives? LMFAO, what exclusives? They dont have Halo anymore which leaves 360 owners with Forza and Gears as exclusive titles. That does NOT justify a $10 a year price hike.

It's still a choice. If the price outweighed the features, I wouldn't pay for it. But the price is reasonable for reasons I stated just a couple posts up.

There is always a choice.

*sight* Here's another one thinking that his word is unrefutable truth that no one's allowed to disagree with.

If you don't like it, that's fine. Xbox Live isn't the right fit for you. I get that. But it IS the right fit for me. And there you have it. We've both made our decisions for our own reasons, neither of which are right or wrong.

Not a logic fail on my part, just a maturity fail on yours.

How was I immature? I stated simple facts. Yes all of those were FACTS and you call me immature? Someones getting a little upset much?

You said you always have a choice. But on the 360 you dont. It's either pay and play online, getting the most out of your games and money or you refuse to pay for live and only play single player. That doesn't seem like much of a choice to me. Sure, YOU have both XBL and PSN so you can choose which system to play. Sadly that's not the same as whether or not you have the choice to pay for XBL because you simply dont have a choice. 90% of games these days are based around their multiplayer component, without live you're SOL.

I also said that just beacuse you are willing to pay for a service doesn't make it a rip off. How many people here pay for cable, then complain about the cable bill every month? Same deal with XBL. Get over it, You were proven wrong.

Xbox Live isn't even that good. I owned, played (a lot) and paid for numerous accounts and for Xbox Live for 3 years. Even though I no longer own an Xbox, I still have two accounts running on Gold and others that just recently expired. The only thing I miss is private/party chats, but in terms of actual gameplay and the experience? Nothing makes me miss XBL. It's the same thing, only you pay to unlock content you already bought.

So are you saying that you paid 60.00after paying 299.00 to play your 360? So if I read OP post correctly, in order to play online , you have to fork out 60.00, on a machine you forked 299.00 for. wow Great logic OP

I dont understand why most lemmings over rate XBL's features. People pay for XBL Live because they "have" to, so that they can play their Halo, MW2, Gears2 etc online. NOT because of the features Xbox offers.

If online multiplayer is available in silver membership, nobody would pay for gold.

M$ has got everyone by the wallets it seems, luckily i have used both and didnt see any point in paying to play online. I dont care for things like dashboard integration and party chat, i just want to load a game and play some online. PC is free and destroys Live so why do you lemmings accept that you have to pay to unlock your multiplayer content?

So you can play the games. You already paid for. Online. For a year. That's it, it was the only reason I paid for Live, and the only reason I refused to since.

It still strikes me as odd that people are so hung up on Live when they have no intention of buying it. I don't like Apple products but I don't harp on about it for days on end. It only ever comes up when ever someone asks me "how do you feel about Apple" to which I reply "not really interested" and then we move on to other topics. But here? Every few days a new post is brought up where some supposedly unbiased nonfanboy (pfft, haha, right. . ) says that Live is either terrible or that people who have live are in denial and then go on to point out how PCs or PSN or whatever is free. Okay? Why are you here ranting like a lunatic instead of playing on your free crap? I would if I was so against Live. I'd say "sucks to be them" and play on. But no. They latch onto the issue like jealous housewives and refuse to let go. They are compelled to give commentary and I just don't understand why. I mean, seriously, who are they to say others are in denial? Internet nobodies who want to pee in peoples cheerios because, well, it seems like they are petty, vindictive, bitter, and jealous. Why? I haven't a clue because I was almost certain they said paying for it was bad.AncientDozer

I'm the same. I won't speak unless asked. The only exception are like OP. Where you try to justify it with stupid reasoning.

If you want to pay for and you enjoy XBL, go ahead. Just don't create threads saying "THIS IS WHY WE PAY FOR XBL!" because it never works. Everything you pay for is done on a different FREE service, the same or better.

What strikes me as odd is how all of a sudden, people think it's odd for posters on System Wars to be arguing over which system is better. And it's especially odd that people don't understand why PSN vs Live debates keep popping up right after MS goes and raises the yearly cost of live by 20%, and justifies it in an interview with timed exclusive dlc (paying for the right to pay for something a month earlier) and espn3 (paying to access a service which may or may not be available to you, and if it is, it's free to access on any other electronic device in the world). Is it REALLY that odd that the opposing camp is going to have a field day with it? Is it any odder than 360 fans making threads when an already behind schedule anticipated game like GT5 gets a delay? Is it odd when a much hyped game fails to deliver and floppage threads are made? Maybe it is stupid to argue over systems, but nobody is MAKING you post on System Wars.

I was just trying to answer people's questions about why I pay for it. It just seems that no cows want to hear it. Especially if you have PSN as well.

How are we cows if we have both? Especially when I prefer the 360, but have the wisdom not to pay for a service thats no better than the free alternative. Great assumption.

XBL is better than PSN there's no doubt about it. Whether its worth €50 more than PSN? i dont think so but there's not much choice in the matter if you want to use Xbox Live.

it's just rip off fee....anyway MS is smart, that itsells cheap consoles (fat 360) but once you start to play it, you gotta pay more, such as wifi and fee to enable multiplayers feature.

i had both and ps3 sucked compared to 360 in terms of marketplace and download times. even now i dont want one. I have no friends to play it with and i hate the ps3 controller. its a great system dont get me wrong and maybe things improved but i cant play it when there is no one to play with and the controller sucks imo.

I have no real objection to paying since: a.) Microsoft has to balance the books...and LIVE is one of the few things that is helping keep them in the green. b.) The service is still superior to any similar service on any platform, console or PC. I expect the competition to catch up next generation. But at that point, they may begin charging for online play too. We'll see. Microsoft couldn't reasonably charge when others aren't if their services are equivalent, so I guess we'll see who gives and who doesn't.

It is helping them to inbalance the books towards the sky. Did you see the profits this company had recently? probably bigger than all gaming companies put together. I wonder how other companies were in the green all those past gens without charging monthly fees for their consoles

You do know we're talking about the entertainment division, right? You're aware that said division has only recently turned a pofit for the first time in the existence of the Xbox brand? Maybe you didn't, so I'll let it slide. Otherwise, your credibility will have vaporized secondary to a lack of knowledge and misplaced aggressiveness.

The Entertainment & Devices division has only made a profit for 2 years. It's been in the negative since the beginning.

http://kotaku.com/5026559/xbox-division-finally-reports-profitable-year

You should not have needed extra help to understand there was context to the point. Come on, guys. I know it's early, but you guys are acting like you need your hands held. Do better.

Whether either of you like it or not, the bottom line here is that Xbox Live is one of the key factors helping them become profitable for the first time ever. Sorry if it hurts?

I paid like $40 for the next 2 years. Microsoft was offering a special before Nov 1st. If you signed up for that you could have paid less then $50 for 2 yrs of XBL. I think the total was like $84 for 2 years. I have PS3 and hav have played online with it. It's ok, but I hate their interface. Trying to find things on PSN is always a hassle. It definitely doesn't have the kind of content XBL has. Hooking up with friends on PSN can be a pain as well.

I have all 3 consoles and Xbox Live destroys the other two. Anyone who honestly tries to say that PSN is better than XBL is just plain lying. There is no debate over this topic, XBL is superior and that is a fact.

XBL overall is definitely superior. The online gaming (once you are in a game) isn't a whole lot different until you want to invite other friends to join in. XBL Friends and communication features are superior in every way and I don't know if any PS3 game supports person to person video like you can do with XBL.

Now you may say im a fanboy which I am but think about it if you cows were in the same position we are you would have the same belief and feelings, its your ps3 thats what you like thats why you pay for it.XanderZane

You can STILL get LIVE for much less. 12 months for like $38 @ Buy.com. 12 months for $42 at Amazon. IIRC. The only people who are going to be paying $60/year are the people who don't care and the people who have their account set to auto-renew.

You can get everything cheaper. Be it games or hardware. Fact of the matter is you are still paying to access content you already bought, for a year.

[QUOTE="Iantheone"][QUOTE="AustyBosty"][QUOTE="Sp4rtan_3"]I dont know why paying 60$ a year for XBL offends so many SW users  I have a gold cubsciption and play the best console online game on the market (Halo reach. Halo 3) with my buddies so its money well spent.

I totaly agree with you this is the point I was trying to get across I pay so I can play the games that I want on the system I want.

Why should I pay for something that other platforms offer for free?

Like I said you pay for it because it has the games and people that intrigue you more then another system, its personal preference.

[QUOTE="ImprovedMind"] You do know we're talking about the entertainment division, right? You're aware that said division has only recently turned a pofit for the first time in the existence of the Xbox brand? Maybe you didn't, so I'll let it slide. Otherwise, your credibility will have vaporized secondary to a lack of knowledge and misplaced aggressiveness.

[QUOTE="kuraimen"][QUOTE="Flame-Eternal"] a.) Microsoft has to balance the books...and LIVE is one of the few things that is helping keep them in the green. Flame-Eternal

It is helping them to inbalance the books towards the sky. Did you see the profits this company had recently? probably bigger than all gaming companies put together. I wonder how other companies were in the green all those past gens without charging monthly fees for their consoles

The Entertainment & Devices division has only made a profit for 2 years. It's been in the negative since the beginning.

Poor multibillion dollar company, they need our help to keep being one of the richest companies in the world. You know, I think I'll donate half of my salary to oil companies today so I can contribute, I bet their CEOs yachts are probably one month too old or something.

its not a donation, its paying for a service that offers features some consumers want. you make it sound like Microsoft is holding a gun to everyones head.
