PSP and DS were neck early on without either platform having the clear advantage (DS was usually selling better in Japan, and the PSP was usually selling better in NA... give or take). The Wi has been dominating in every territory since its release, and it's only dominating increasingly more as time goes by.

The PSP never, at any point, passed the DS's worldwide install base, and if you're going to claim it was slaughtering the DS please provide links to prove to me that it did.

Just go check the NPD when the DS had to be combined with the GBA sales to total 120k while the PSP sold 250k every month after month. As you know that changed. It use to outsell it in Japan too for a few months.

I'm aware that the PSP bested the DS in a few NDP's after it's launch, but it never took the overall lead against the DS which always held up against the PSP in sales... your use of the word 'slaughter' is highly inappropriate... check out the console war if you want to see a slaughter. The Wii is outselling the 360 and PS3 in every territory, every month since its release by upwards of 2:1, 3:1, now 5:1 and 15:1 respectively.

Also for you to use the PSP vs. DS argument againt the Wii is insane when considering the DS has gone on to obliterate the PSP, it applies many of the same marketing principals as the Wii, and it's backed by the same company as the Wii.

How is it diffrent? The PSP use to outsell the DS by quite a bit but things change and now the Wii outsell the PS3 and 360 but things could change just like they did with the PSP.

The PSP is failing against the DS now for the same reason the the PS3 is failing against the Wii. The consumers have spoken, and they prefer pick up and play, cheap fun games rather than high end epic games.

Again, what's the difference?  The consumer use to pick the PSP over the DS and now they are picking the DS over the PSP.  They are currently picking the Wii but what is to stop them from changing their minds and going with something else later on?

I think that the Wii has already won.  The sad part is, it's sad to see gaming go out to the mainstream.  Most developers I think will choose now to make crappy cheap games on Wii rather than high-production value fanfare.

I see so many posts about how the Wii's graphics are crap, it's a fad, in the long run I wont win... but to me it sounds more like the bitter tears of fanboys (that taste so sweet to a sheep like me) who cant come to terms with the fact the the Wii is shaming their favorite console.

Is it that you think the Wii wont win?

Or is it that you just dont want it to? ;)

Anybody who's living in reality knows that the Wii is dominating MS and Sony right now... and the fact that it's doing so at a time when all three major players are on the market is strong evidence that this trend is likely to continue throughout the entire generation. The Wii is simply reaching a much larger demographic, one that does not particularly care about HD or the graphics that you mistakingly think is going to win the 360 or the PS3 the war in the end.

And for people bashing Wii's lineup and 3rd party support, one thing is certain, both are only going to get much better for the Wii as this generation goes on,

and that means things are only going to get much worse for 360 and PS3 fanboys :(

I love Mario, and as soon as Galaxy and MP3 come out, I'll repurchase a Wii, but I honestly few that if the Wii blows the competition away gaming as an artform is going to be set back in a major way.

That basically an admission. What people want to happen, and what actually is happening are two different things entirely.

It's not basically an admission.  It's me flat out saying I don't want the Wii to come out on top.  I think it would be a major step back for video games as an art form.

Why are you leaving out the 360?
The 360 and the PS3 have the same philosophy and the 360 is still doing better than the Wii sales and game wise.

And plus, the handheld market is different from the console market.
People expect a little less from a handheld.

But do they really want the same gaming experience on a console?

Alright what ever you say, obviously this isn't going anywhere cause either you are a bit newbish to remember when the PSP use to clearly outsell the DS or you just decided you won't remember.  So, I will just leave it at that, just remember it's not just the PSP and DS, the N64 use to easily out sell the PS1 aswell and even GC used to sell alot more WW than the Xbox and had a lead of a few million.  Things change but you could continue to make your almost daily thread claming that the Wii can't be touched and that there is no way that that could change.

Good Day.

Jedigemini, please, give it a rest.

This is system wars, people post whatever the hell they believe and, to be honest, your doing the same. The Wii is already a winner in my book and thats what matters, not the opinion of some random guy halfway across the world. If they want to publicly reassure themselves of Nintendo's demise just let them. We can always disprove them later. All in all I find this thread a waste and a flame magnet. Can someone flag a mod and close it please?

Oh, and it was pretty low of you banning that one guy, even if he was a bit of a jerk. Man it out for once.

I never at any point said the Wii won the whole generation, I'm just making the assertion that it seems pretty darn likely when considering the consumer response it's getting and the strength of its appeal in all major territories.

It is very doubtful that the Wii is going to win in AAA and AA games so why do we really care if it becomes the casual system of choice ?

diggyzoom

you got a ps2 did you? ppl doubted that for it's lackluster launch library but still bought it. look how support turned out in the end.

I don't know why people keep comparing the PS2 and the Wii.
They are not the same console.

The PS2 had a traditional method of play and the Wii does not.
The PS2 had like 3-4 generations of similar control scheme behind it. The Wii is starting from new.

This means devs will have to think harder in order to put out actual good games on the Wii (and not what we've seen so far).
They need to build the games around the Wiimote's new control scheme while the PS2's control was a given from the start.

We don't even know if the Wii's control scheme will become more limiting than freeing in the end. Only time and devs will be able to tell us that.

The PS2's sales are not as comparable to the Wii's sales in term of what quality of games we got and will be getting from the two consoles.

People throw around this idea that only powerfull systems can have epic games and epic stories. It's not true, it just requires work on the development end.

Is FF12 more "epic" than FFVI?

The game support was already in place for the ps2 as is the ps3 despit both having mediocre early games. People understood that MGS2 , FFX , Gran Turismo 3 , etc were coming down the pipe along with a bunch of new exciting IPs. I didn't buy a ps2 at launch and I didn't by a ps3 at launch but I sure do realise what is coming down the line , what my gaming tastes are , and what I want out of a machine. I estimate that that the third party quality titles on the ps3 are going to bury the Wiis and Sony's games are better suited for me. The Wii third party games are already lagging behind and there is not much in site to even make a dent in the quality of the ps3s.

Maybe I should buy a Wii for casual games that I don't like and Nintendo's first party games that I don't prefer over Sonys just because the Wii will probably sell the most systems and maybe that will lead to a couple of cool third party games. Let me get right on that.

The hardware may be capable of voice acting and good stories but those aren't exactly Nintendo's strong points.

Better Technology does allow for more epic stories as much as you want to protest.  LOTR could have never been filmed 20 years ago for example.

Good things can happen on older technologies, but new technology expands possibilities even further.

I want big budget games that blow last generation away.  Not something that looks good when you need to pull up a screenshot from five years ago to appreciate the difference.

i don't understand why more and more sheep are getting paranoid and insecure when all analysts, medias, and facts are pointing toward the Wii's success... have any of you seen JP's (and the rest of the world's) chart's lately? doesn't it remind you of the PSP.vs.DS battle? take a hint and stop acting like a bunch of kids :Pgrayfox_2k
Maybe we're not paranoid or insecure... maybe we're just gloating and rubbing salt in your wounds?

Bitter fanboys are still under the impression than Nintendo dominating will bring less hardcore games?  What are they basing this off of?

Hardcore games will always be here.  Hell, look at the DS: a ****load of casual games, a ****load of hardcore games, and a good amount of non-games.  There's something for everyone, and that's what Nintendo's going for with the Wii.

I was searching the internet for a psychological explaination that describes the condition that wii haters suffer from and found this on answers.com

"cognitive dissonance

Mental conflict that occurs when beliefs or assumptions are contradicted by new information. The concept was introduced by the psychologist Leon Festinger (1919 - 89) in the late 1950s. He and later researchers showed that, when confronted with challenging new information, most people seek to preserve their current understanding of the world by rejecting, explaining away, or avoiding the new information or by convincing themselves that no conflict really exists. Cognitive dissonance is nonetheless considered an explanation for attitude change."

I own a Wii and a 360.  I have MAJOR doubts about the longterm success of Wii.  If bad game after bad game after bad game after bad game keeps appearing on Wii, even ultra casuals will begin to get angry.  A console's continued success is ultimately dependent on the games it has.  Wii has a LOT OF BAD GAMES on it.  I mean, a ridiculous amount.  Some games are great.  However, 6 months after the 360 launch, there were around 12 AA and a couple of AAA games.  Wii has maybe 6 or 7 AA games, and 1 AAA game (and Warioware is considered to be A by a lot of people and VASTLY OVERRATED by Gamespot).  When the novely of the wii remote wears off, then all it has left is games.  Wii NEEDS GOOD GAMES.  Of course, SSBB will sell millions.

Wii is cheap and fun for a little while.  Everyone I know around here don't play theirs anymore and are saving for PS3 or 360.  It is a fad to most actual gamers I think but not a fad to casuals and non gamers.  I mean after E306 most people were running around here goin "Wii60 FTW!" and now its pretty much back to normal.Tiefster
Well guess what, I'm writing this from my Wii. So I must still be using my Wii.

I think the bigger question is Who the Wii is competing agaisnt, because its not the xbox360 or ps3. Nintendo said this themselfs.

"Nintendo Co President Satoru Iwata said his company's next-generation video game console, the Wii, is not in competition with rival consoles such as Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 but is rather aimed at expanding the global gaming population."

Did you notice in the last NPD numbers released, that the Wii sold 100, 000 more units than the 360 and PS3 combined?

Your ancedotal edivence is a joke in the face of the cold hard truth.

Does the number of sales increase your personal enjoyment of the console? And since you asked in your first post I will say yes to your second question. The Wii is a detriment to how games are played. It shows you can make a crappy gimmick and it will sell very well.

I don't think people are denying the fact that the Wii is currently winning, but they are pointing out how the blind Wii fanboys boast about their console winning for the wrong reasons.  The Wii is winning in terms of sales soley because little kids and casuals see the console as revolutionary and expect revolutionary gameplay which sadly the Wii does not have combined with the fact already that the Wii can barely push out anything above GC graphics.  I know this from from firsthand experience because my cousin owns one.  We basically played Wii Sports the entire time because all the other games either have bad controls like Farcry or they feel gimmicky like in Zelda.  When my cousin played my 360 he quickly saw the huge difference in terms of quality of games and he actually started to regret buying the Wii only after a few matches of Gears of War.  He said he bought the Wii because he thought that the idea of a motion sensing controller was cool and that is the real reason why the Wii is winning in sales and not because you stupid fanboys think that your amazing gameplay is shaming all other consoles.
