Actually there was.[QUOTE="Steppy_76"]
[QUOTE="TAKE_IT_BACK"]I'm pretty sure that in the crash of '83 there weren't a strong pulse of quality games to blot out the shovelware. IronBass
It was nothing in comparisson with today.
For what the market was back in the day it was comparable. Activision titles were rock solid while titles from "quaker oats" and "Kool-aid" were FAR worse than much of the shovelware of today. Either way, there is a solid established backbone of a games market today that didn't exist back then in the infancy of the industry. MS and Sony have almost their entire userbase drawn from that, while Nintendo has a large portion of its userbase built from users who are just as likely to walk away from the industry and those who are now in for the long haul. How those people go "long term" will determine what happens with Nintendo. For what the market was back in the day it was comparable. Steppy_76
Relative comparissons are irrelevant when the actual situation is that much different.
The only major difference now is that there is still a healthy indie and core market throughout the entire industry.

This, and the fact that the Wii "shovelware" titles aren't the big sellers.
Wii play, and wii sports are the highest selling games and they are bad games...The Wii's shovelware rarely sells well unless it has advertising, hype, or had a similar name/boxart to a successful game. Most of the Wii's million sellers are quality titles, and most shovelware does not sell well. The issue with the crash was that there was less competition around, and video games had not yet really kicked off that well. Today the gaming business, like most entertainment, is more or less fail proof even in tough times because people want to escape.

wii sports got a 7.8 only because it was super hyped casual sensation. THe golf game is broken. The tennis game is broken, and the bowling mode is broken. The only mode that actually works is the boxing... I mean the game is seriously broken. If they add a wii plus wii sports (not sports resort) the game could actually get a score in the 7.0 range and deserve it.[QUOTE="shutdown_202"]

I'm more curious how out of all the sports, he thought boxing was the one not broken.

I basically felt the same. Tennis and Golf were fun. Boxing was basically arm flailing which I really wasn't a fan of. Granted, I grew tired of wii sports quickly after playing it but it was fun well it lasted.
[QUOTE="King_Dodongo"][QUOTE="Sonic_on_crack"] um RE5 just moved past 4 million copies , high Quality game with amazing salesSonic_on_crackon two consoles combined, dude 2 million is still really impressive and especially considering it launched only like 10 days ago You got it all wrong. We dont know the numbers yet. Capcom said that theyve SHIPPED 4mil because the demo was so popular.
The wii is too expensive to develop for for something like that to happen.
[QUOTE="dr-venkman"]PS2 was the king of shovelware, so your comparison fails.hakanakumono
PS2 had a much more healthy ratio of high quality games to low quality games. It didn't really have that much shovelware. For shovelware see the PS1.
While this is true, again, I bring up the fact that the PS2 has been around much longer than the Wii. So of course, it will have a higher ratio of quality games to bad.
