Even the Wii can't keep it's strong momentum forever.
wii has been making crazy profit ever since released and even if they do a price cut they will still be making crazy profit since production costs for the thing is dirt cheap, its a win win situation for them, they cant possibly lose even if they dont sell any wii they still won, its sad really, Ps3 is the True Next gen (or current gen) Console and its at last place
People are forgetting that generally speaking, consoles don't hit their stride until they reach the sub-$200 price-point (and before someone mentions the 360 Core/Arcade, it's a low-volume SKU and therefore doesn't really count). Based on last-gen numbers, there are still approximately 50 million gamers that haven't purchased a next-gen console (and that number is extremely conservative considering the "casual"/"non-gamer" movement).
It is overpriced right now. Once they price cut it, it will continue to sell strong.TykainIt always was overpriced tho for the hardware its using, it's not just now.
Only with regards to the hardware could one argue that the Wii is overpriced. In terms of economics, it is safe to say that the Wii is underpriced.
Thank God, the Wii is completely worthless.SilverbondNo, it's not. :|
I second this.
It's over! All over! Burning-Sludge
What is over?
Teh fadz of course!!!111 (My previous post was meant to be a sarcastic one)The Wii got a price increase in Ireland a few months ago so they will probably put the price back to what it was and advertise a big price cut at christmas :roll:MJPK
Not quite sure why they did it in Ireland since you guys use the stable € but the UK had a price increase as well due to the weak £.
Slight correction: A 50% decline in sales the past 5 months from a year-to-year basis.
With that in mind, let's find out why that is, shall we? During this time last year, the system was feeding off the record-setting success of games like Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit, two of the systems most successful games to date. Until Wii Sports Resort, the system didn't have a game that was even close to being as big of a major release as those games (and Super Smash Bros. Brawl) were last year. It's no secret that the system hasn't had a great year as far as big name software goes, and a lack of presence from a major Nintendo franchise has shown itself. So yeah... this news isn't exactly the most shocking revelation ever. Also, who honestly expected the Wii to keep up at last year's frantic pace to begin with? What we witnessed last year with the system was almost holiday-like sales each and every month, and common sense would have told anyone that not even the Wii could hope to keep that up.
In that regard, yes, the "Wii Craze is ending." However, the system is still selling very well, especially being over two years in at the same price. The system just needs a steady flow of quality software to keep interest in the system. This was proven when Monster Hunter Tri managed to spark sales in Japan, but elsewhere, third party content hasn't been nearly as important enough to generate any interest in the system. Therefore, it's up to Nintendo to make sure the train continues to roll. As far as a price drop goes, it isn't needed, simply because the Wii has yet to hit a true rough spot. HarlockJC hit the nail on the head with the rate of the Wii selling on a PS2 level at the same time, and that was AFTER the PS2 had seen its first drop in price. That's not to say that the PS3 and Xbox 360 moves of late aren't enticing, but it remains to be seen if those moves deminishes the Wii's momentum in any major way.
The next few months will tell a whole lot about what direction Nintendo will be going with the Wii. If the system manages to stay afloat or even pick up again because of upcoming games like New Super Mario Bros. and Wii Fit Plus, expect Nintendo to keep on trucking as it is now. However, if the price drops of the PS3 and Xbox 360 actually start to put a dent into the Wii's sales and not just boost their own success, then the chances of a bundle or *gasp* a price drop are more likely. I know people like to jump the gun a lot around here, but Nintendo's still holding too many cards to be making the hasty moves that some people want to see.

i highly suggest that wii-bashers think before posting
please don't post something that'll make u look silly a few months from now when the wii dominates this holiday season
JB730
There is no gaurentee the wii will dominae this holiday. I will be the first to say I see a close holiday race. The difference being Nintendo is in the best situation to embarrass the competition if it plays its cards right. Whhether they will or not is unknown
lol @ wii-bashers praying that the wii craze ends
it's the best selling console this generation by a large margin......people are going to have to deal with this fact
JB730
Wii bashers?
You're like the 5th poster on this thread. Why are you SUDDENLY implying there are Wii bashers?
Nervous much?
Sheep are going to have to remove their 5 foot thick glasses off, and realize Wii is really overprice, it's downright disgusting and insulting.
God, I hope so.
[/QUOTE Why? Does it matter if there are not games you like on the system? HarlockJC
My main problem isn;t the games. I own one and I actually don;t like the games, but as I said that was never my problem. My problem was the price point. It's priced $150 too much for what it really is.
With the thread containing the link from Kotaku about rumors of a price drop, I doubt this is the end for the Wii. I do agree with ArticEdge, this holiday season is going to be a tight race. But with a Wii price drop and NSMBWii coming out, Nintendo will be fine.

Go study some economics and tell me that the Wii is overpriced. :)

suddenly? as if you haven't realised that system wars is largely populated by people who regularily bash the wii
it hasn't been overpriced according to basic economic principles (supply and demand ring a bell?)
try learning some basic economics before posting about sales and pricing
it helps make it seem like you at least know what you are talking about.

Economiclly, the Wii is not overpriced.
Probably just due to over saturation. I mean it seems like everybody and their grandma already has one.
HD consoles are regularly outselling the Wii by a large margin now, and as we know those systems have MUCH higher attach rates for third-party games. I think the remainder of this gen is going to be very interesting.GulliversTravel
Are you adding them together? Because otherwise you are very very wrong. Not to mention the wii sells large quantities of third party software as well.

You are gonna pull that supply and demand crap? Please, get back from reality. You are ONLY bringing that point up because Casuals who are demanding the Wii, in reality, DON'T KNOW BETTER ;) There goes your precious supply and demand principles  Those casuals who are demanding the Wii NOW, are pretty much, getting SUCKERED.
Try getting your head out of cloud 9, and realize, if you KNOW BETTER, it's severely overprice. Many of us see it. Why can't you?
I mean it's NO BRAINER......$249 360 or $299 PS3 slim vs a decade old based technology hardware @ $249?
C'mon, it's no brainer which has more bang for your buck.
The price needs to drop. Once the September numbers come in and the PS3 outsells the Wii, Nintendo will finally slash the price. Rocky32189It would not be the first time the PS3 outsold the Wii. Nintendo did not lower the price then so who says they will now.
It always was overpriced tho for the hardware its using, it's not just now. gold is so over priced, it has gone up 300% in the last 10 years alone...... with that said there is no such thing as over pricedIt is overpriced right now. Once they price cut it, it will continue to sell strong.
