Once more I was walking through the electronics dept at a local store yesterday and I saw the Wii cabinet empty of consoles as ever. It actually got me thinking last night how it will affect sales this winter. As the industry well knows this is the time of year that the majority of consoles are sold. Now generally the console makers have warehouses full of units just sitting around waiting for this time of year in anticipation of massive sales spikes. Both the PS3 and 360 have had relatively slow years and are sure to have plenty of consoles to meet demand. On the other hand, the Wii has been unable to meet demand no matter how quickly they make them. What this means is the 400,000+ units sold per month average is Nintendo's cap on monthly sales. There are no known surplus units to ship to deal with increased demand this winter. MS and Sony on the other hand most likely have enough surplus to sell well over 1 million units in a month should the demand exist. So my question is, could the lack of available Wii units cause people looking for a new console to go buy enough of the competition's systems to actually beat the Wii in sales?

I can see the competitors having higher sales than normal, but even at the Wii's 400k, I don't expect PS3 and 360 sales to nearly triple to match it.

it's possible for a month but only because of supply and probably only to retailers rather than sell through.

??? look at last years sales. the 360 sold over 1 million in november and 2.5 million in december. that was before halo3 or the price cut. the 360 will beat those numbers this year on that alone. but it gets better for the 360 and worse for the wii. the wii sold over 3 million last december. that means 2.5 million people are going to have to get a 360 or ps3. the wii has been selling because it's the cheapest so 90% of those people will gett the 360 since it is half the price of the ps3. the ps3 sold 700k last december. as you can see 400k for the wii will leave them in a distant 3rd with a sony like showing.

half of all retail sales happen in nov and dec. those two months sell as much as the other 10 months combined. it will be hard for even the ps3 to not double the wii this christmas, and the 360 is going tosevearly beatthe ps3.

I think it depends heavily on if Nintendo has a small stockpile of Wii's sitting around somewhere waiting for Christmas. If they do then I don't think they will be outsold. Otherwise yes.

I don't think Sony can do it, but I think Microsoft can.

But Nintendo isn't stupid, I know they've got a pile of Wiis for christmas.

Chances are that Nintendo are stockpiling at least a reasonable number of Wii's for the christmas period. It will still be in short supply and probably get outsold by the 360 for at least one of the holiday months but there will be more available. Why would Nintendo stockpile Wii's? Because people shopping for christmas presents get more pissed off if they can't find what they want = bad image for Nintendo.

Anyway just my (baseless) opinion.

It's still sold out for you?

For the past few weeks the Wii shortage here has been over. I was in Best Buy yesterday, they had two Wii's. I also see them regularly in Wal Mart too, supply has caught up with demand here.

You really do have werid logic. I can't understand how just because 3 million purchased a Wii last year means that there is going to be 2.5 million who are going to be left buying something else this holiday season. Are you talking about the same people or different people? In either case the logic doesn't make sense.

I love how you throw that little morsel of BS in there. Where is your proof that the Wii is selling because it's the cheapest. Also why wasn't the GameCube a huge success then since it was cheaper then the Wii? Also, the Wii has been getting a lot of press for getting people that are not gamers or are lapsed gamers into it. So are you telling me that all the soccer moms are going to buy 360's instead? Haha. Yeah right.

Anyways, to answer the post, I think it's going to be tight race in sales during the holiday season, demand will drive the 360 sales to wii levels, and Sony will get a healthy bump. In the end I think the Wii will still outsell the 360 this holiday season but it will be very close.

Maybe in your area. Not in NYC. I never see any wii's when i go out to shop. only 360's and a LOT of ps3s.

I think people who want to buy a wii either already have another console, or only want the wii as their main console. The whole wii is out of stock thing boils down to this. To make stock, you need to ship more units than you sell. That means, by the next shipment you still have units on the shelf (see xbox360 and PS3) that are counted as in stock inventory. The wii' main issue, is that it sells out before the next shipment arrives, hence it cannot build up enough stock to be available for every consumer who wants to waltz into Best Buy and purchase one. People argue that nintendo is not producing enough, thus causing a shortage. False, nintendo wants to sell as many wiis as possible. Such a self sabotaging business strategy is not a smart move and could only come from the mind of anti wii fanboys putting in their two cents on the matter. As far as production is concerened, I'd imagine there is quite a large hurdle in meeting the demand for such a popular product that has manages to sell over 10 million units in less than a year.

i was talking about different people. demand for electronics increases over time. inflation dosn't apply to electronics as it does most products. as people wages increase more people can aford them. if 3 million wanted a wii last year you can safely expect even more to want them this year. last year 3 million wanted a wii and got one. this year about half a million will get one. the other 5 out of 6 people that want one will have to get something else.

i dont think so. Im sure nintendo can/has enough units available. They are just playing around with the hype of the Wii, making shortages so people actually want one, badly. They are probably saving units for the holiday time too.

actually it's not nintendo's fault. they dont have control over it. the problem is with their cpu chip suplier, ibm i think. they cant get enough chips out of ibm, and you cant make a wii without the chip. i think they are building another plant to produce more chips, but the chip production issue wont be fixed before next year.

You honestly think the xbox360, which has been out for almost two years, will still sell, if not more than, the amt that it did last nov/dec, b/c of a game? You are kidding me....The majority of peole that will be buying Halo3 are ones that already have the system. So the sales of the xbox360 will not exceed 3.5 million this nov/dec....Unless there is some other major price drop or bundle deal that is too good to be true...

You really think90% the people that bought the wii b/c it was cheaper, will turn around and HAVE to get the xbox360? Major I dont think so.

The bulk of people that bought the wii bought it b/c it was cheaper or for the games for it. Hence there is no need to go out and spend another 300-400 dollars on another system...Thats why they got the wii in the first place, to cut down on the money they woudl be spending on games and such.

Your guesstimations have too many holes in it and assumes way too much.

First of all... I see several Wii's at Best Buy and Gamestop just sitting around. Any supply concerns for the Wii right now seems to over. 300k to 400 k seems to be the rate they are selling now. That said I do not see the Wii selling nearly as well as the other two systems in December. The 360 sales spiked last winter where they nearly sold as many in November and December as they did the other 10 months combined. I expect the PS3 to show a similar trend, the 360 wont sell as well as it did last year though. Also the PS3 only sold 700k last december because there were in fact only 700k PS3 shipped by Christmas.

First off, when I was still on the east coast a few months ago the Wii was still scarce. Now that I've moved clear across the country it's the same story. Most stores I go into usually still have signs up explaining the lack of consoles.

For those who don't think the PS3 or 360 can sell more then the Wii is currently, realize that monthly console sales in winter typically hit the million mark. I know it would make sense for Nintendo to have been stockpiling, I'm not calling them stupid by any means, but the question is have they been able to? And if they have been doing this then where is the proof? I haven't heard a blip out of Nintendo about the situation, but then perhaps they feel there's no point in addressing something they have no power to fix for the time being.

The bright side to all this is once the 360 and PS3 sales die down after Christmas the Wii will probably continue to sell strong. The question is will the competition be able to use this to get back in the race for first.

Hmm well while you may have a point, that 400-500k units per month is the cap for the wii at least now, I think that nintendo wouldnt want to lose their sales lead, especially with the big titles this year, so hence it's possible they may outsource some production of the system to make more during the holidays. If that happens, obivously it would not be too likely that the 360 or the ps3 could outsell the wii during the holiday season as right now everyone and their brother in law wants one. Still there may be a possibility that if nintendo can't break the 500k production mark by december than yes the 360 or ps3 can outsell it at least for a month.

Nintendo obviously kows this if it is a problem and may be storing for the holidays. Also because people now like wii more who says the other consoles will sell that much.

TC, you are absolutely correct. Nintendo's biggest concern at the moment is supply, and they know that they are in trouble. There was even that article that said that nintendo failed to get those factories online in china which would have boosted production to 1.5 million units a month. This holiday season, I imagine that you could make hundreds of dollars of profit selling your wii on ebay, maybe even a thousand if things get really bad close to dec. 25th. Could get ugly as well.

I'm not gushing over how awesome nintendo is. This seems to be a pretty reasonable assessment of what will happen. Hopefully nintendo is paying and overpaying manufactuers to try to beef up supply ASAP
